Painless install on a TiVo HD. Everything needed was supplied. Runs quiet and cool. The supplied eSATA cable is very short (2' maybe) which is fine for placing the drive alongside the TiVo. Usage is competely transparent. I found this to be enough capacity to make the TiVo useful again now that so much content is HD.

I opened the box, connected it to my TiVo, restarted the pair and voila! I now have nearly quadrupled my storage space and no longer live in fear of having to choose which older programs get the axe. It's been running for a couple weeks and I have zero complaints. Buy one now...if you've got an eSATA connection, otherwise there's also a USB-ready version. However, one thing must be made absolutely clear (and it is in all the documentation): This item is not a portable drive. Newly recorded programs are shared between the DVR Expander and the DVR so don't plan on sharing it with a friend.

I use the WD DVR Expander to add recording space to my TiVo HD. It has a very simple set-up that takes all of 10 minutes. I now have two dozen HD movies in my queue for watching when I have a few free days. The only problem that I've run into is my TiVo not recognizing the expander for about one day. I had the expander lying on its side and it seemed to get too hot. When I stood it vertical, everything went back to normal. I've only had the expander for a little over one month (as of April 2009), so I haven't yet hit the three month mark when some other reviewers have indicated that the it sometimes [*] out.

...and now I can say that my TIVO loves me.
For months, I've had to let go of a favorite HD show or movie, only to regret the deletion shortly thereafter.
The expander has changed all of that. TIVO is no longer stressed out with the amount of information stored on its system. Now we can enjoy having 5, 10, 15 HD shows in the queue without feeling the pressure of having to watch it before it is deleted. Permanently.

Not long after buying my TiVo the hard drive was filled with programs and movies. I purchased this DVR Expander to increase the storage capacity of the TiVo and have been very happy with it.
Once the Expander is connected, the TiVo works exactly the same as before the addition, just with a much greater storage capacity.

Setup is so simple that anyone can do it! Installing this is just as easy as using the Tivo interface. It costs a bit more than your average external 500GB drive, but it's worth it. The basic hard disk inside the TivoHD is great, but it fills up far too fast; especially with HD content. This black box of joy allows you to watch all of your favorite shows at your convenience. It's cool, silent, and matches well with the TivoHD unit.
