Every so often we make a purchase that we aren't so happy with. Whether it be a poorly advertised feature, failure to perform when needed, or difficultly setting up - the last thing you need is a surprise like that after you've done your part researching consumer reports. Hope you saved your receipt! Today I'm going to do a quick review on the Edirol R09-HR, proudly withstanding it's 2nd Soul Camp and this time almost 40 hours of music with only a few hours rest itself!
When it comes to field recorders, there is a lot to consider. Mainly the durability, battery life (if rechargeable), SD Card capacity, and ease of use. Enter the Edirol R09-HR. I've had this unit for over 12 months now, and paid about $330 at the time. It features a 1/8" stereo input (that's all you need, dont be fooled by 1/4" inputs), rubberized outer shell, easy to read display, removable SD Card (I use 8GB cards), a hold button to prevent from accidentally hitting stop or split, and comes bundled with the A/C adapter (crucial!) and remote control. The unit also has a USB 2.0 connect, and preview speaker - but I have a tendancy to just remove the SD card and upload/preview to my computer manually.
The unit conveniently records 24-bit/96kHz high-resolution audio in .WAV or .MP3 format. Unless you need the full res .wav file and have huge amounts of spare space on your computer to process these files, I've found that recording at 320K Mp3 works fine for most DJ sets. 1 hour comes out to approximately 140mb of data.
Even though I tried to make a habit if splitting the audio between every DJ, obviously I can't stand at the dj booth the whole time. At one point, I was away from the Edirol R09-HR for more than 7.5 hours. That's 7.5 hours of unattended recording going from early morning coldness to baking in the afternoon sun. I know that's not the best way to treat your gear, but the point is - the Edirol R09-HR stepped to the plate when we needed it to most. Set it, and forget it!
I've used a variety of SDHC Cards including Toshiba, PNY, and SanDisk. How much space do you need? All of Soul Camp fit on ONE 8Gb card @ 320k Mp3. Frankly an 8Gb SDHC card will run you about $20 and I'd rather have 2 or 3 of those in my case for backup rather than one 16Gb card. Figure out what works best for you and your budget.
The Edirol R-09HR is as easy to use as plug-n-play. Power, Line in to unit, Line out from Mixer, Check recording levels, hit record, and Lock. Reverse procedure when finished. Going on over 1 year now, I have over 50Gb of recorded DJ sets with the Edirol. I can honsetly say that even when this breaks *knock on wood* or when it's time for a new unit - I will keep my purchase in the Edirol family.

So far I've used this to record live music, more "studio-sounding" audio captures, I've used it on film sets to capture audio, I've used it as a personal voice recorder, etc.
It is very easy to use, super straight forward layout. The quality is good, the onboard mics sound great, etc.

i am a boom operator and mostly use the R-09 out in the field. Along with recording directly into an HD camera I use the recorder as a 2nd recording device recording from my field mixer into the recorder. It's easy to use and I wasn't at all confused about any of the operations. I haven't had the recorder long enough to see any down sides. But overall it works and sounds really good.

So high tech I didn't pay enough attention to distinction between WAV and MP3. Used up memory in card quickly but once I adjusted to MP3 I had more room. Excited about using this for recording church services for online. [...]

I use this device to record myself on walk cast and podcasts. The on board condenser mica are highly sensitive and capture every last detail. I love that it is easy to use, has a huge screen display, and a removable SD card.
I have no complaint. This is a must buy for anyone seeking high end quality recording and ease of use.

We needed to record sermons in our church, with a feed from the existing sound system. We had to have a unit that would be easy for tech novices to learn quickly and use with ease,(our recording committee, to be specific). So far, it has provided us with both impeccable sound quality and that all-important "no-brainer" operation.

I bought this primarily to get a seperate audio recording for videos, particularly of people talking in big room or walking around, so I use it with a tiny headset mic. So far I've found the recording quality to be everything I wanted, and the ease of use has be awesome. I'd definitely recomend the unit.

I run a school, [@], and we record everything that we teach. These recorders are easy to use and the recording quality is incredible. We purchased inexpensive mono-channel lav mics that are powered by the R-09HR's option to power a mic. Alkaline batteries last approx 6 hours. In order to use rechargeable batteries and not have to take them out you will need to purchase a separate power adapter.

The recorder is very easy to use, and I'm very happy with the quality of my recordings.
When I play back a high quality wav. file, the recorder will stop responding to input (volume, etc.) until the clip is finished. On lower quality recordings, this does not happen.

This recorder is a replacement for a mini disc recorder I had for about 5 yrs. The Edirol R-09HR is really easy to use and has superb sound quality. It far surpasses the mini disc in so many areas. It's also easy to manipulate and download the files to computer. Interface is fairly self explanatory, doesn't take long to get around the functions. [...] Only thing is I wish I'd bought the case and tripod for it, at the same time.

Comments about Edirol / Roland R-09HR Portable High-Resolution Audio Recorder:
I spent a considerable amount of time looking for just the right product, and I chose this one because its reviews all over the internet are top -- and the price offered by B&H was in many cases about 30% cheaper (list price $400 elsewhere; not so at B&H).The purposed I need the recorder for was actually quite simple -- voice recording, principally. However, I wanted archive quality. MP3's aren't great quality and won't be around forever. I could've spent a lot less, however, if I just wanted a voice recorder. I happened to check out Roland Edirol's website and found a guide they offer that's really informal but highly informative. It's not the owner's manual per se, it's more like a guide to the different recording feats you can perform with the device: [@] That guide gave me all sorts of ideas of other things I could do with the device. The online guide definitely influenced my final decision. When the device arrived, I was surprised to find it was smaller and lighter than I expected. This is great, because I can just carry it without much fanfare. It's about the size of one of those brick phones from the early 90's. It has outperformed my expectations in every instance. For example, I've turned old songs that only existed on old tapes into digital versions that sound, well, just as they did on the tape at least! My non-techie dad uses it a lot too, which was my goal -- recording him and archiving it. It had to be easy to use if nothing else. Changing the settings on it is straightforward; the blinking and red recording light are very obvious and intuitive; the buttons are a good size, not too small; just drag and drop files onto my Mac.The main drawback I have with the device is that, unlike, say, a digital camera, it doesn't have a removable battery that can be charged. You'll have to use rechargeable AA batteries, which is fine but I'm still going to go through A LOT of batteries doing this. It does have an AC adapter, but I mostly use the devise away from any electrical outlets, so the battery limitation is annoying. I'm giving the Roland Edirol 09-HR five stars not just because it's really easy to use and its recordings sound excellent; it's also because it's served as a gateway for other recording purposes and expanded the range of situations I'm interested in recording and producing.

So far I have interviews one person in front of a construction zone, ambient noise of the L train, and recorded game 5 of the Stanley Cup for my boyfriend who couldn't listen to it because of his job.
I used the built in mics for the two self recordings and I loved the way they picked up sound. Even though they are built in, I could direct the mics to pick up certain sounds more than others. It made for a very visual recording.
The aux/line in recording was smooth, crisp, and sounded they same as if live. It didn't lose any information or quality in playback.
After reading only 10 pages of the manual, I feel you can safely record basic events and situations without having an audio engineering degree.

I needed a portable recorder for stage to record our band and my own playing.I started out with a line 6 that was a great idea but after 2 stopped working,I bought another.A boss/4 track. This was complicated for what i needed.
I ended up buying the Edirol R-09HR.
Absolutely great sound, very easy to use, wonderful for practice as it has a built in metronome that does not get recorded when you play back your recordings.I haven't used the reverbs yet but if its anything like the quality of the recorder it has to be pretty good.I started thinking back that Roland has been in business for a long time.Theirs a good reason for that.I couldn't have hoped for a better tool to checkout my own and the bands playing.I use it almost everyday.Don't even bother to look further just go out and buy it you wont regret it.
