The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens is a standard lens that provides a large maximum aperture of f/1.4. It is the ideal prime lens for use with all Canon digital or film SLR cameras. When used on Canon digital SLR cameras with the APS-C size sensor, the equivalent focal length of this lens will be 80mm, which makes it an excellent choice as a bright medium telephoto lens. Its large f/1.4 aperture allows for sharply defined contrasty images against a nicely blurred background. The lens offers superior peripheral brightness even at the maximum aperture, and corrects for possible flare.

The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance, while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration, which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.

This lens also incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), which ensures a quiet and high-speed AF as well as full-time manual focus override.

EX lens series denotes excellence of engineering and new technology
Super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting
Equipped with the silent, responsive and high speed Hyper Sonic Motor and provides full time manual focus override

Not too long ago, I was reading all the reviews on this lens online because I was also afraid of the potential focusing issues when mounting on a Canon. The decision was even harder because I was purchasing this lens via B&H online. If you were buying from a store, you would be able to test the lens immediately until you are fully satisfied. But my previous shopping experience at B&H helped me overcome my fear of getting a faulty unit and I took the plunge.

And now, here I am. The one writing the review. I usually don't like to spend time writing long reviews but I felt that it is important to set the record straight for the Sigma because it is an optically amazing lens.

I will start with the conclusion:

1) Amazing bokeh!
2) Superior than the Canon f1.4 in every aspect: construction, image quality, aperture blades, FTM (full time manual override), etc.
3) HSM is very fast AND accurate when focusing.
4) Unbeatable value considering the alternative which is the Canon f1.2 L at 3x the price.
5) 50mm mounted on crop sensor yields 80mm focal range, perfect for portraits (FF would opt for 85mm version).

6) NOT a lens for beginners! Difficult to focus if you aren't familiar with setting up the exposure (shutter speed, aperture, ISO) and the limitations of your camera (focus points, depth of field, etc). If you shoot this in full auto mode like a point&shoot camera, I guarantee 90% of your shots will be out of focus... but there's nothing wrong with the lens.

My review will mainly target 6) on why so many people complaint about focusing. I do acknowledge that Sigma did/do have QA issues but it appears that after a few years of production of this 50mm lens, things have got much better. (Note that I got the 'updated' version with the new finish)

Sigma offers the same lens at three different focal lengths: 30mm, 50mm and 85mm. I opted for the 50mm because it was the equivalent of an 80mm range on a FF. It's very close to the 85mm range aka "sweet distance" for portraitures. And shooting people is precisely why I purchased this lens.

You are expected to shoot at f1.4. Otherwise, what's the point right? Unfortunately at such a large aperture, your depth of field is razor thin narrow. Just to give an idea, if your subject is looking at you at an angle, one eye will be sharp and the other will be out of focus. It's that narrow.

Or, you can focus on the person's nose and the eyes/ears will be out of focus. No kidding.

Mounted on my T2i (550D) with 9 AF points, you are guaranteed to miss shots if you leave it at full auto focus. To properly use this lens you better manually select one AF point prior to shoot. Compose your shot such that the AF point lands precisely on your subject's eye. Assuming the shutter speed is acceptable (faster than 1/80s), stop it down to f1.8 or f2.0 to ensure a large enough depth of field for the entire face.

I reckon that mounting the Sigma on a 7D with many more focus points, your chance of landing one on the subject's eye is higher than on a Rebel. But please! Learn how to take control of your camera and use select the focus point manually.

Also, the HSM works great! Silent, fast and accurate. In dark indoor environments (ex: restaurants), it's actually easier to leave my Sigma on AF rather than MF or to perform focus override. It's too dark for me to determine whether the subject's eye is focused properly, and no time to use the LCD. Therefore I trust the Sigma HSM and it has given me spectacular portraits with creamy bokeh most of the time.

Remember, just let the Sigma auto focus on one point only(!) on the person's eye. And you'll be fine.

In my opinion, its main weakness is the minimum focusing distance. Taking a candid full face picture is difficult (too close to the lens...) and I would require extension tubes for macro shots. Also, don't use this for landscape as the smallest it can go is f16 and the image quality falls off a cliff.

So before returning the Sigma, understand the consequences of shooting wide open (narrow DOF), acknowledge its strengths (best for portraits, not landscape) and learn how to focus properly (single point AF or full MF), you'll be stunned with the results.

I honestly don't see any reason to get the Canon f1.2 L at 3x the price, unless weather sealing is crucial for you.

I purchased this lens after hearing improved reviews and I wanted to significantly upgrade from the canon 50 1.8. I planned to use the lens mainly for portraits. I use the canon 100mm 2.8 macro and a few other cannon L lens and wanted to get a good 50mm to add to the mix. This lens however has been a very major disappointment.

The first copy I received from B&H had major focusing issues, many of which have previously been described. However, when put into manual mode the lens was sharp and had beautiful bokeh, so BH promptly send me another copy to try.

I received the second copy and saw an immediate and huge improvement in the auto focus. With the second copy the lens was sharp and accurately focused under reasonable and moderately low lighting situations. This made me very happy until the first semi-sunny day... Took copy number 2 outside for some portrait work after about a week and was pleased with what I was seeing on the camera. Unfortunately, after looking at the shots on screen, I saw the worst chromatic aberration of any lens I've ever owned (in about 25 years). I carefully went back to check other lens, including the previous copy under similar lighting conditions, and there was nothing like the bright green stripes this copy of the lens produced. So now, those pictures from that photoshoot are completely worthless.

This lens could (and did) preform beautifully indoors, in soft controlled lighting, or for anyone not printing or selling anything greater than 5x7, at which size the CA would not be very noticeable. hence a rating of 2 stars rather than 1. I however, do a good bit of travel photography and this lens is much too specific and unreliable for me to bother putting in my kit when traveling abroad. I'll be saving up for the 50 1.2 someday or waiting for canon to revamp their somewhat dated 50 1.4.

I really, really wished I had better news....

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR:

This is a fantastic lens. With the shallow depth of field and great image quality, it's easy to produce dreamy portraits that look fantastic.

The only problem, correctable with a camera with micro focus adjustment, was that it front focused badly. I mean really badly. I had to take it all the way to the end of the micro adjustment scale.

If you don't have a camera that can adjust for lenses, I might be hesitant about purchasing the lens, but I am THRILLED with the results I get.

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR:

There are allot of hoaxes and rumors concerning this glass has issues with focusing, mine didn't have any problems at all, on my ff body yes m2 i don't think body really matters its how you use it, i own both this and the canon 1.2 and this is indeed sharper than the canon 1.2 wide open, i did notice some color fringing wide open but the sharpness is tack on.

That's the sharpness and focus part.

Now even thou my lens focus very well there are something strange about it. Day time I got no problems, this lens cared me some nights out shooting when I saw some reddish castings some strange things began showing up in captures like ghosts and energy from the lights rays, it picks up just to much of everything it doesn't always happen that's the scary part, it just flood to much light in to some of my captures even when turned down to its max f32.
The details are sharp but takes very long to render and when it does its very nice the extra blades give this beast more teeth in the lights on the streets than any 50mm out there. Oh and don't the math fool you even thou at 1.4 with a size barrel of 77mm it lets more light in than canon's 1.2 smaller barrel. The contrast is also higher and tint is warm, the colors just rocks not to say that the canon don't.

The build is very solid and strong all over I know this for a fact cause this thing took a beating, I wont go into details what happened but it stood up with no problems at all, I didn't expect this from so called cheep plastic, I will buy this lens again if canon 50mm were to quit but the over all quality is very high it didn't let me down at all.

However I had to sell simply because i shoot in very harsh conditions and and i need a 50mm with weather sealing to keep out dust and such.
This is the only area that i was very nervous about cause once water touch your contacts then things get a little dull.

Ok to the point, this lens is quality with out the seal and its price beats anything else on the market for this kind of blur, if you don't mind 1/2 stop less from a 1.2 or a 0.95 lens this is your best bet. I did test mind before finalizing the purchase made sure everything is spot on and it was. I did see a difference in blur vs the canon but this is the dof is much smaller covering less focus in distance this is why this sigma is more forgiving. And all together the canon is a different beast, I ended up going with the canon 1.2 because of other factors.

The sigma is a challenging lens, i notice that I had to be very careful when I shoot at night when shooting people, Its something you have to get use to over time, but when I got the canon 1.2 it just get things right all the time, im not sure if sigma is more of a other brand lens, but canon users, you know that a canon lens is built for canon cameras so the error line there is very thin its finder than a hair line.
I trust canon products over all simply cause they work with canon best, this is another reason for the change. But for this price you cant go wrong.

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR:

This lens is just great, i have used this lens for almost everything and since i do a lot of low light shooting it fits the bill, its far better than the canon at this aperture and price point, the ring is smooth maybe not as smooth as canon lenses but its smooth enough. Im not grinding peanuts up so its nice, i think this lens is just to bright for be so bright that even thou i low it down in the night i still get light rays. the lens has very good contrasting its well built its strong enough. don't always believe people and there hype about its plastic finish and cheep felling, there's nothing cheep about this piece of glass. for the price this is a steal.

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR:

My daughter just turned one recently, and as I look back at the many lovely photographs of her that I treasure, one things stands out: most were taken by this lens! This is especially notable considering I have some other high quality lenses: the 17-55 2.8 IS, the 70-200 f4L IS, etc. They are all great, but everytime I feel like taking snaps of my daughter playing around the house, this is the lens I reach for.

I found autofocus to be accurate but not as fast as my Canon lenses. Nothing that bothered me, the accuracy matters more.

Bokeh is incredible. Seriously: this lens seems to have the softest, creamiest bokeh of all the lenses I have.

Get this lens, and assuming you get a copy as good as mine, all you need is a beautiful subject and good soft light to get lovely portraits!

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR:

This lens was my first foray into "off brand" lenses. Since Canon did not offer an L lens in this aperture and focal length, and the reviews have been favorable for this lens, I decided to purchase it.
The auto-focus worked properly for exactly one day. After that, the lens kept on "searching" and would not "lock" into focus. The focus motor was making scarey bumping noises. I have returned the lens to Sigma for repair.

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR:

I purchased this lens in November 2011. I use it with a 5D Mark II mainly to take portraits/people shots, occasionally landscapes, and other miscellaneous things.

I bought it despite some users reporting autofocus issues because those reviews probably constitute selection bias. The lens is actually slightly wider than 50mm which I like. My lens autofocuses quickly and accurately at all apertures and distances. It is very sharp shot wide open. Colors and contrast are great. Creamy bokeh. Overall image quality is gorgeous.

Build quality of the lens is great. Very solid. Balances well on the 5D. The hood feels like cheap plastic but that doesn't matter.

Overall I'm very happy with this lens.

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR:

I just purchased this lens as a low-light and half-length portrait lens. I have a 5D MKII. Wide open this lens does suffer from noticeable aberrations (especially at 1.4 & 1.6) and soft center focus. Aberrations and focus issues start to vanish at 2.0 and smaller apertures. For portrait use I suggest your sweet-spot range is 2.0 thru 2.8. The lens build is very good BUT I think the lens hood bayonet mount is a little looser than I would like. It doesn't have the same secure feel that my walk-around Canon L lens has. The lens hood itself has a cheaper feel to it than the Canon. However, that's not a reason to be spending $1,000 more for a lens that is almost the same in quality and results. The biggest difference in the two seems to be the weather sealing and the use of a metal barrel on the Canon vs. the hard plastic of the Sigma. Unless you're shooting portraits under extreme condidtions these items should not be an issue at all. Overall a great buy and a very good asset to your glass arsenal.

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR:

i bought it as a gift for my dad to go with his canon 60D, and it turned out to be awesome.

Very quick focus. Strong body. Really round bokeh balls even raised up to f4.
However, the subject in focus is a little bit softer than that of canon 50 mm 1.4 which i have used. The lens hood is plasticy when mounted on, but better than canon 1.4 which does not even include a hood.

Generally, very good lens! way better than any other 50 mm 1.4 lens available on the market.

Plus, the delivery of BH is quick with nice packing.

This is a great lens, IF you get a good copy. We've all heard about its focus issues, but if you are lucky enough to get a good copy, this is as good as Canon 50L, and you get to keep about $1K..!
I got lucky, and got a perfect copy the fist time around. No doubt, I was reluctant before buying it. But the focus is right on, and it's sharp wide open. The new finish is beautiful, and the lens is NOT heavy at all. The only negative for me is - the AF hunts while focusing. Not a deal-breaker for me,
All in all, a real bargain at its price - just make sure you have the right copy.

I use this lens for portraits on my 7D and for shooting video at night time.

I really love how well the lens performs at night. It pretty much replicates what I can see with my own eyes. I do not notice a soft focus like a lot of the other reviews say when the lens is at 1.4. Personally, I think the bokeh on this lens is outstanding. I often times find myself messing around with the bokeh instead of taking actual pictures haha.

Like everyone has been saying, however, the chromatic aberration is pretty ridiculous at 1.4-1.8. When I open the lens to 2.0, this is pretty much solved.

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR:

I have had a lot of great shots and amazing video shot on my 7D with my Sigma 30 1.4 so I wanted to get the equivalent experience with my 5D and the sigma 50 1.4. Didn't happen. Soft shots very, very frequently. I sold my Canon 50L 1.2 for the same reason and think my next endeavor might have me sporting the Zeiss 1.4 manual focus.

Sorry, Sigma. Really love your 30 but it unfortunately doesn't work on the 5D.

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR:

I have used this lens almost every day since I bought it over 2 weeks ago. I have used it for shooting weddings, wildlife, portraits and landscapes.

Very sharp, and remarkably sharper than its Canon counterpart wide open, and almost wide open.
Colours are quite good and it produces lovely circular bokeh.

The 77mm filter size is great as all my other lenses are the same size

A bonus is that this lens comes with a hood and a protective case.

I use this lens for weddings. It has a great feel about this lens. Focuses fast and quite. Nice depth of field for those close up shots. Has a 77mm front, same as my other "L" Series Lenes.

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR:

This review is late as I have been very busy. This is a follow up after sending the first lens back that focused very well but was too soft at the focus point. The replacement was worse. It back focused by about a foot and the sharpness was as soft as the first sample. This was on a 7D, single focus point and on a tripod. I contacted Sigma via email and although very responsive, I don't buy their story that every camera is different and the lens needs to be corrected for that camera. I have 3 Canon lenses and never experienced this. It's too bad as I really want a 50mm f/1.4 lens for the bokeh and speed. Why have this lens if you are going to stop down? -I already have an f/2.8 lens. I am a photography student and my instructors would grade all images from these lenses, shot below f/3.5, as OOF. If I lived in NYC where I could try a dozen to find the one- maybe.

Here is what I got from my experience:
Buying this lens is 2 step process:
1)You order and get it, check, find strong FF, but instead of getting disappointed, you do
2)ship it to Sigma with note about FF. Week later it comes back with note about software update. You check it and yahoo - it is perfect, focusing exactly on the spot at F/1.4.
Again, do not judge too quickly, spend extra $6 and 7 days, and you will have superior optical device in your hands.

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon SLR:

Great performer! Wonderfully sharp and fast focusing. After shooting the much heavier Canon 50mm 1.2 for a long time this lens offers 90% of the image quality without the bulk in weight and price. Well built and very quiet focus motor. It will require focus microadjustment on your camera body to really shine. Spend a little bit of time on this and the results are stellar!

Just received the lens from b&h.
My copy have shift-focus on my 5d Mark II.
Tested on canon 550D. same problem there.

3 months ago I bought same lens in my country. Same problem was with that copy of lens. Nobody couldn't fix it. So I sell it.

Right now I searching for solving this problem. But unhappy.

                        BTW.
Lens is amazing. Everything is perfect but autofocus with shif-focus. :(
