Comments about Gitzo GH1780 Center Magnesium Ballhead - Supports 22 lbs (10kg):
The ballhead is smooth when the camara is used horizontally. But, when I shift to vertical, the camera creeps down. Most of my work is nature macro, so I simply hold the camera with my hand. Although not ideal, it works. My main reason for purchasing the head was to get something lighter then the three times heavier Gitzo that I have been using for four years.

I really appreciate the weight and stability of this head. However, it comes at the cost of limited range.

Comments about Gitzo GH1780 Center Magnesium Ballhead - Supports 22 lbs (10kg):
I needed a lightweight head to take on backcountry expeditions and this was the ticket. Extremely lightweight and smooth. Holds my D90 and 70-300 lens firmly in place. The only gripe I would have is the panning feature. As has been stated the lever looks like it is vulnerable, but I don't think it should be a huge issue. Also the panning is not as smooth as I would like. If you only occasionally use the panning feature and want a ultralight head that has very smooth ball action with a firm hold than this is for you. If you do a lot of panoramic shots than I might look. elsewhere.

Comments about Gitzo GH1780 Center Magnesium Ballhead - Supports 22 lbs (10kg):
Sure there are better heads out there, but for the price and simpleness you can't get much better. Expect normal Gitzo quality and ease of use. The head is very stable and doesn't sink when tightened. Panning is smooth as is the ball, and tightening the knob won't make it feel as though your going to break it. The weight is a nice touch and you don't get any grabbing as with cheaper ball heads.

Comments about Gitzo GH1780 Center Magnesium Ballhead - Supports 22 lbs (10kg):
Needed a smaller lighter alternate to the larger AcraSwiss/Gitzo 3 series tripod setup. Using this head on with Gitzo Traveler series tripod allows for a "carry on" airline option and a weight saver on long hikes. Works well with my Mamiya 7 and Canon gear, upto the 300mm f4. With the Canon's longer lens or the view camera I would use the larger 3 series setup. The heads low center of gravity keeps the mounted camera manageable, the head does not have the falling break action that the ArcaSwiss head has. The locks are strong and postive, without giving the feeling that next time the nob could twist off before it stops the camera from moving. The movments are smooth and free of the "grabbing" found on other light weight heads. Cons, you will need to postions the head to allow for 90 deg change in camera orientation as there only one head postion that allows for this movement, I just move the pan around until the slot lines up.

This is a very light but sturdy head. It holds my medium format digital or my canon 1DsmkIII with moderate size lenses. Easy controls. I am going to love this head for traveling.

Comments about Gitzo GH1780 Center Magnesium Ballhead - Supports 22 lbs (10kg):
I use the head with a D300 and a 80-400 lenses and find that it is a great head to match with a carbon fiber tripod. I have not noticed any slippage and it is easily set in position.
