Comments about Gitzo GH2780QR Center Ballhead with Quick Release - Supports 30.8 lbs (14kg):
I bought some Gitzo legs as well, so far so good. The head was a mistake. From day one I didn't like the locking wheel. It just didn't feel good in my hands. It got stiffer and stiffer with very little use. The other day it locked up on me and I can't get it loose.
Junk, no luck reaching Gitzo about it either, plus I lost my receipt so I'm SOL.
Go with anything else (note: I didn't buy the head w B&H, now online shopping for a replacement and had to come here to stop others from making the same mistake).

Very well constructed, the head works as it should with a solid feel and smooth operation. It holds my 5D MkII with 70-200 f/2.8 solidly.

Comments about Gitzo GH2780QR Center Ballhead with Quick Release - Supports 30.8 lbs (14kg):
I live in Wisconsin. I noticed that the knob got difficult to turn as the temperature dropped (20's F). Called Bogen U.S. several times. No one ever answers the phone. Finally got a return call. The Gitzo rep said there is a lube in the knob that stiffens in "extremely cold temperatures like 20 degrees." I thought I would live with it until I took it out in 10 degree temps and the knob seized after 10 minutes. The ball still moved but the knob was frozen stiff.[...] I ordered a RRS BH-40 as a replacement.I used the levels more than I thought I would. They are very convenient. One other negative is that Gitzo does not use arca-swiss style plates which have become the industry standard. This limits you if you want an L-plate or more secure fitting plate.

I purchased this ballhead as lower cost alternative to Really Right Stuff. The tension adjustment is very easy to master. Good range of movement. Very well made. Built in spirit levels are a really nice feature. You also have to really torque down the quick release plate to the camera body, and also adjust the clap tightness, but once you do you get a solid drift free shooting point. I put this on top of a carbon fiber Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 tripod and couldn't be happier.

Comments about Gitzo GH2780QR Center Ballhead with Quick Release - Supports 30.8 lbs (14kg):
This ball head could be fantastic, in all it is crafted well, sturdy and reasonably light. However, it's greatest weakness is the mounting plate. The heads load capacity is supposedly 30+ pounds. What good is that if the mounting plate creeps with a 5 pound dslr when shooting vertically. I think gitzo should be embarassed to put out a head that costs this much and has such a weak link. I also think that they should come up with a solution in the form of a new mounting plate.
The cameras and lenses that I am most often using with this head are a Nikon D3 or D700 with the 24-70 2.8, or the 70-200 2.8, either way, however you combine those lenses and bodies the weight is never above 12 pounds I guess. When shooting vertically and the mounting plate is tightened all the way, the camera begins to creep.
The actual ball locks very tightly but it doesnt mean anything with such a weak link in the mounting plate.

I finally settled on this ball head after sending back two classic ball heads. The small gitzo didn't have a drag adjustment or the pan feature .The big gitzo had these features but weighed too much. This one is perfect. The main tightener knob is huge and it has all the features i need including 2 levels, and it is light .and it can hold 30.8 lbs.there is one screw adj on the quick release trap that comes loose, you have to watch it but as funny as this thing looks ..it does it all

This ballhead is very smooth, easy, and steady. I use it primarily for bird photography, and the smooth, variable resistance is great.
