This microphone adapter is great! It allows you to connect your own mic to a Sony camera which only works with Sony products.

It works fine, however it is a little fragile as there is no lock.
In my case it sometimes slided out of the hot shoe during operation.

I use it to record conferences with only the sound of the speaker. Sound come through a wireless headset microphone, a power amplifier, an attenuated direct box from the loudspeakers line output. The result give me great satisfaction.
The drawback is the automatic volume control (AGC) of the camcorder which give progressively annoying noise during low signal input. But the the best and also the worst of the AGC is the large range of usable signals (I didn't measure the range).

Mainly this product is used for the use of my Sony Video Camera in a waterthight enclosere which features an external microfon. As the HDR-NC3 soes not feature a jack for an external Mic this adapter is required to have the desired connectivity.

Will use to attach shotgun mike to my HC90 Sony camcorder. Design does exactly what I want. This product is the "Only Show in Town". There is nothing else I could find to do the job. Pearstone is making a bundle on this one. The cost at almost $50 [...] should have been about $15 or $20 at most. In addition to cost, another negative is the lack of swivel or tilt adjustments. But the big negative is the limitation on the weignt of the microphone (just a few ounces). The weight limitation could be increased considerably if the height were reduced by about 50% thereby improving resistance to breakage.

We purchased this adaptor to work with our Sony HDR-SR5 and a lapel mic. The adapter works well, but, as others mentioned it doesn't lock in place. This makes it a little wobbly when you connect the mic cable into the jack.

Audio quality is good, but there is no easy way on our camera to adjust the volume. As a result the sound is quite hot and requires work in post production to reduce it. This is also partly due to the lapel mic we're using. We will be purchasing a small mixing board to allow us to adjust the volume during the recording process. This may not affect all users as other cameras may have the ability to change the input volume on the camera.

Overall, it is a good product that could use a litte refinement. Since it is the only product available to use while working with Sony camcorders that do not have an audio-in, it is worth purchasing.

Would I buy it again? Yes. If there were something else available that would do the same function would I try the other product? Yes.

I wanted to attached a Sony ECM-CG50 shotgun mic to my Sony HDR-HC1 Camcorder for shooting interviews. The unit works as advertised. However, the attachment to my camera is precarious. It does not solidly latch into the hot shoe receptacle. So, a little handling/movement of the camera can cause it (and whatever is mounted to it) to detach.
Fortunately, my mic hasn't bounced off of the floor yet, but it is a real possibility.
The mic is well within the specified weight limit of the adapter.
I will need to apply extra measures to secure it, which I did not expect.

We have 2 Sony HDR-SR1 Camcorders. We have always had a problem with the audio recording using the "mic in" on the camcorder in HD format. Problem solved! New life given to these once stored away camcorders. The Pearstone Microphone Adapter for the Sony Hot Shoe works great. I am able to use a wireless mic system and make a great HD video recording with great sound. No more hiss or buzz while using the HD settings. It fits the Hot Shoe just right. Just make sure the mic cable is secured properly and not pulling on the adapter and it will work real good.

This is great product. It greatly extends capability of my Sony HC3 camera. With it you can add higher quality sound by using an external mic. The only downside is that there is no good way to monitor the sound going into the camera. But after a few tests you can get the levels right and improve the overall audio.

I use the adapter with a juicedlink XLR mixer. It gives a mic input to my Sony camcorder. Easy to use but the holder is not very solid on the hot shoe.Outside I use instead the wireless Sony microphone but I don't like its sound.

It's worth it because it does give you a plug-in connection for 3rd party devices. However, as others have noted, there is no locking ring ... a puzzling omission.

If only the adapter is on the camera with a connecting wire, the fit into the Sony proprietary hotshoe is tight enough. However, when topped off with a hotshoe to 1/4-20 adapter and a Zoom H1 recorder, a total of about 4 oz., the whole thing becomes wobbly. It would be okay for a relatively static placement on a tripod, but not for running after subjects and bumping around with the camera.

Nevertheless, it gets 4 stars for being the only game in town.
