Nikon Capture NX 2 Photo Editing Software is a full-featured non-destructive photo editing program that provides photographers powerful tools to quickly and easily edit their photographs, including the highest quality RAW (NEF) conversions from your Nikon camera. Plus it fully integrates with all Nikon software including Camera Control Pro 2, Image Authentication Software, Transfer and ViewNX. Plus Capture NX 2 has maintained all of the functionality of Capture NX, but has added improvements to the usability of those functions.

- U Point technology uses Control Points to help realize results envisioned in the editing process. Using NEF files for optimal performance, Control Points allow photographers to select and isolate an entire image or selected areas within the image for enhancement, Furthermore, those enhancements can be instantly cancelled or added with ease, without compromising the original quality of the image, and U Point control is perfectly compatible with each NEF file's Instruction Set.
- Selection Control Points
- Now you can selectively edit photographs without the need to manually outline or mask the area for editing. Simply place a Selection Control Point anywhere on the photograph then choose from almost any adjustment such as D-Lighting, Unsharp Mask or Noise Reduction, while limiting the "reach" of that adjustment to just the selected area.
- Auto-Retouch Brush
- Capture NX 2 adds an automatic retouch tool to its image editing toolbox allowing users to seamlessly remove blemishes, dust and other distracting elements from photographs while maintaining the integrity of the image.
- Shadow/Highlight Adjustment
- With just a simple slider adjustment you can easily open up shadows or recover blown-out highlights. Highlight recovery is most effective for RAW (NEF) files however it will work with JPEG and TIFF files as well.
- Redesigned Interface
- The latest version includes a number of improvements to the user interface including the addition of Customizable Workspaces, Improved Toolbar function and layout, Improved Edit List functionality, a newly designed image browser featuring a Favorites Folder, and Improved Image Resolution adjustment controls.

I've used a few other less-expensive programs before, but this is my first serious photo editing program. I've had this program about one month, and am still learning how to use all of it's features. The interface seems easy enough, as I was able to do many basic procedures before I ever looked at the manual.
If you are considering this program, my only advice is to be sure you have a sufficiently powerful enough computer. I currently use a Dell Optiplex with a Pentium 4 and only 1GB of RAM, and if I have ANYTHING else (IM, IE, etc) open along with this program, all programs run painfully slow. I would recommend at least 2GB of RAM and a dual-core CPU.

I attended a Nikon School and saw how useful this was for editing photos. Also, since this is a Nikon product, it has access to full EXIF information on the pictures.
I've had a couple of hang ups with the software. Running XP Pro on a monster laptop (Dell m6500 - dual quad core).

Although I use Photoshop and ACR for most processing, I ordered CNX2 so that I can process my IR images.
Software package can be used for Canon or Nikon raw images. Software seems immediately easy to use, yet I believe that after studying instructional materials, the program can become a very powerful tool.

If you use a Nikon camera and Photoshop, you are faced with the dilemma of whether to invest in Capture NX 2 or Lightroom. I recently upgraded to Capture NX 2 and Adobe CS 5, but had previously used Capture NX and earlier versions of Photoshop. I debated whether to switch to Lightroom as part of the upgrade, but decided to stay with Capture NX 2.
There were two things that carried a lot of weight in the decision. First, I read a review on a website comparing Capture NX 2 and Lightroom. The author noted that Nik Software and Nikon partnered on the development of Capture NX 2. As a result, Capture NX 2 did a better job than Lightroom converting RAW files generated from a Nikon camera into JPEGs. The review had some images that demonstrated the point. The images were different enough that it convinced me. Secondly, Nik Software makes some great stuff. I also own Nik's Complete Collection and its U-point functionality saves a tremendous amount of time in creating masks within Photoshop. That same U-point technology is in Capture NX 2 and it makes touch-ups on lighting, saturation or other attributes very easy.
Now that I have been working with Capture NX 2 and Adobe CS 5 for a while, I realize that the big drawback of Capture NX 2 is the lack of integration with the Adobe suite. I cannot cleanly open a RAW file using Capture NX 2 from within Photoshop and/or Adobe Bridge. As a result, I will sometimes resort to opening both Capture NX 2 and CS 5 which uses through a lot of memory and slows down the work flow. I modified my work flow so that I create the JPEGs prior to launching Photoshop and then make adjustments within Photoshop. As a result, I alternate between View NX and Adobe Bridge to navigate my images and directories. It is a reasonable work around.
My recommendation is if you shoot using a Nikon camera in RAW format and care about image quality, then definitely get Capture NX 2 and don't worry about the limited integration with Photoshop. Other camera users will like the U-point functionality within Capture NX 2, but if you use Photoshop extensively as part of your workflow, you might want to consider Lightroom.

I have a D7000 and the image quality, detail and color are to my eyes better with Capture NX2 than Adobe. I find it easy to use. It is different in it's layout than Adobe, so there is a small learning curve. I am very satisified.

Works with both coolscan nef files as well as camera nef files. I also like corrections for nikon lenses. I like the batch feature to make a global change to all pictures in a folder, for example change from vivid to natural when I had inadvertently left camera set to vivid. Easy to use.

Capture NX2 is great when it works. For the effects that it has it does it pretty well. And the fact that it loses little detail during editing and is able to work and capture changes in raw NEF file make it unbeatable. However, on my MBP it tends to crash occasionally. I wish Nikon makes software as well as they make SLR cameras and lens. It is simple to use and speeds up my workflow significantly. I guess seasoned photoshop users might say the same about photoshop as well. Anyway, this is a must have for Nikon shooters.

Even if I have some Photoshop experience, IMO NX2 can get my photos a step further. With some work, good intuition and experts advce, a good photo becomes a great photo and results sometimes are surprising even with bad pics too. NX is quite user friendly, but to get the most out of it, you need to practice and study. Works great on pc and mac. Updates come frequently so no troubles so far.
