The Pentax PH-RBG Lens Hood for SMCP-DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 Lens(58mm thread) is the dedicated lens hood for the Pentax SMCP-DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 lens. Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.
Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

It fits backwards on the lens as well for convenient storage.
I knocked it down a star only because it is rather expensive.

use the lens hood to shoot while on trips to remote locations. the hood is fixed size and bulky to have on at all times.very cumbersome but does block out unwanted light

I believed I had ordered a Pentax item previously, but it was a threaded item. The ability to click on and off separates it from your polarizing lens and allows it to store reversed and out of the way as well. Used it on a shoot in Nicaragua and never thought about it, just used it!

I needed a lens hood for my DAL 55-300 lens and wanted one with the bayonet mount (vs the rubber screw on type). There were no other aftermarket bayonet hoods available. It fits precisely. In comparison, the cheap aftermarket hood for my DAL 18-55 lens does not lock in as tight.

I bought this for my mother, who just bought a Pentax K-x kit with 18-55mm and 55-300mm lenses. The kit didn't come with hoods, but I'm a big believer in always using the hood both for reducing potential flare, as well as added protection for bumps & knocks. The Pentax hoods seem well-made. I wish they came with the lenses, but I can't rate the *hood* down for that.
