The Sony HVR-1500A is an HDV digital videocassette recorder designed specifically for studios and professional editing workstations. Built to be used in concert with both HDCAM and XDCAM HD; the HVR-1500A acts as a bridge between HDV and Sony's line of professional high-definition formats.

Full integration is accomplished by the use of both analog and digital outputs, including serial digital interface (SDI.) This full-featured VTR provides maximum functionality, covering all facets of HD production.

HD-SDI with Optional Inputs
The HVR-1500A has a high-definition serial digital interface (HD-SDI) input and output, allowing transmission of HDV footage to both HDCAM and XDCAM HD VTRs. This can be very useful for high-end studios that predominantly work with broadcast and cinema-quality HD but also use HDV for fieldwork or b-rolls. Additionally, the optional HVBK-1505A analog board can be installed for even more inputs.
Compact Design
The deck can fit into very small areas, making it ideal for OB/Van use. The unit takes up 1/2 of the width of any standard 19" wide racking system, making it easy to mount two side-by-side, taking up 3RU.
Multi-Regional Capability
The HVR-1500A can record to 3 formats, as well as being able to playback DVCRPO 25. Both NTSC 60i and PAL 50i are compatible with the deck making it highly versatile. Wherever the footage is coming from or needs to go, this deck makes sure you're in the game.

Comments about Sony HVR-1500A HDV/DVCAM VTR:

I love this deck. I shoot and edit a show on HDV and we wanted to begin airing it in HD. Problem was the TV station that airs it didn't have an HDV deck. The 1500A fit right into their facility and allows me to Deliver a show in HD. I output from Final Cut Pro to my HVR-M15U deck via Firewire and deliver that tape to the station. Works great.

Being an independent small production company I don't have the $$$ to buy an HDCAM deck. But the 1500A with it's HD-SDI in/output still let's me swim in a much bigger pond than I would otherwise be able to.

My only complant is that this deck - in fact all of Sony's HDV decks - is that they don't work with captioning. They ignore it in fact so I was not able to record a closed captioned version of my show on HDV to send it to the other network that airs it. That could be important if you are sending projects out that need to be captioned.

Comments about Sony HVR-1500A HDV/DVCAM VTR:

Dependable machine like all sony decks are and it runs exactly like all of its big brothers. Menu system is slightly different so it takes some getting used to but the buttons are all right out there and easy to use. The mini LCD screen helps you adjust to the new menu layout, every tape deck from now on should make this feature manditory!!! We are a large post-production facility and it is rack mounted for use with multiple edit suites, so if you need a 9 pin remote this is the one to get. I assumed at first the model below this one, that has SDI outputs I need, would have a 9-pin remote but I was wrong and it cost me a restocking fee at another distributor. All of the other cheaper models do not have 9-pin remotes only firewire and some other remote I was not familiar with. If you don't need the 9-pin remote though the other models are at least half the price of this one.
