Audio Bootcamp Field Guide - After answering thousands of online questions from videographers about how to capture better sound on video shoots, studio and location audio pro Ty Ford wrote "Ty Ford's Audio Bootcamp Field Guide." Readers are initially surprised by how small the book is, but find that there are no wasted words and that all of them make sense to the average human; no electronic formulas to memorize, no discussions about wavelengths, calculus, trigonometry or physics required.
Boom, lav and handheld mics are discussed. A section on mic patterns and their strengths and weaknesses help you choose which mic is best for a particular shot. The Mixer section explains why a mixer can make your audio sound better and how to connect everything to help you get better production sound rather than spending time in post trying to fix problem audio.
A Q&A chapter takes you through the thought processes required to make good decisions about how to get the best audio you can, regardless of the setup.
The Good Gear Guide is an up to date list of solid location audio gear. The Equipment Rental Guide is a list of qualified professional equipment rental houses in the US, in case you need to rent audio gear you don't have. Heavy-duty plastic covers insure the book will survive in a run bag. Spiral binding allows the book to remain open to the page you want without having to hold it.
The Anti-Panic Checklist on the back cover helps you through those anxious moments when you know some thing's wrong, but you're not sure where to look. In a companion online video tutorial, Ty Ford demonstrates the differences in ear-worn, lav, supercardioid and shotgun mics. You hear what the mics sound like as they are being used with an on-going narrative that explains what you're hearing and which mics work best in different situations.

I bought this field guide to help me get up to speed on recording professional quality sound for video interviews. The list of 'Good Gear' in Appendix A was very helpful, as was the discussion regarding the acoustical environment of field locations. As well, it's good to see Trew Audio listed under 'Equipment Rental Houses' in Appendix B. I've been using[...] in Toronto for sound equipment needs and find them great to work with. What's not so great in the field guide is the copy editing. The text is concise and on the whole well written but there are lapses that detract from clarity. The author would benefit from hiring an editor to tighten up the text. It would not cost much but would be money well spent. (Hey, I'd do the editing myself!)By way of example, on p. 62, consider this paragraph:"Working outside, you'd think the shotgun would be the winner. It probably is if there is much ambient noise. I have been on shoots where the background noise was loud enough to get into the sides and back of the shotgun, making the lav a winner. A hyper. It might also have worked, but the client wanted a lav."What does "A hyper" refer to? With regard to "It might also have worked," what does "It" refer to? This is the kind of thing that an experienced editor would bring to the author's attention. As well, given that there are spaces between paragraphs, there's no need to indent each paragraph. If there is already extra space between paragraphs, as is the case with the field guide, then you don't need an indent to indicate the start of a new paragraph. In fact, the indents are superfluous and distracting in such a case.It would be good to have a local source (I live in Toronto) where I could buy such books. How about selling them through[...] in Toronto? In this case, I spent as much on shipping as I did on the book itself. Still, it was worth it.

I was taken back when I saw the size of this booklet. It does supply a very basic of training. It is a good reference for the novice but does not go into very much detail. If it was used as a teaching tool, it would be about a seminar's worth of teaching, not a whole semester. I know that the author is a well respected and talented production audio recorder, I am sorry that he did not get more specific in his audio techniques. I guess most audio guys and gals, like chefs, keep their tricks and specific styles close to their vest. It would be great if Ford wrote a more in depth book with his problem solving techniques that plague most production shoots and sessions.

This is a great example of a person that gets it.
There are several books that go into why thing are the way they are, but I wasn't looking for that. I just wanted the information on what I need to make sure I do when in the field; from a sound professional.
This book isn't about the quantum scientific audio techno jargan I love reading. Its about making sure you cross and dot all your i and t's when in the field. It helped me create my own MAKE SURE list for projects as need be, which is what I wanted!
Thanks Ty.

All I need was a basic book to re-acclimate me to audio since I am really not an audio chick but a DP who works more with camera and lighting. So this book is PERFECT for me. I do not need or have time to read a whole giant book on sound. Just the basics which makes this great! PLUS I have joined Ty's Facebook site which now gives me the ability to ask questions that I need answers for. Thank you Ty Ford - you are the best!!!

This is a much smaller book, booklet really, than I expected. While it is full of helpful tips, it is more geared toward a beginning recording technician. It contains good descriptions of microphone patterns and types and a great section on setting your mixer. What I was expecting was more information and tips on the best setups and mikes for those occasions. A nice easy read but not the technical treatise I was hoping for. I was hoping more more advice than "Listen...to hear which one sounds better."

I bought this book/manual thinking it would be a good reference tool. I was disappointed with both the quality of the book and the very basic information provided. It's a waster to time and money getting this book. I would return it for a refund, but it's not even worth the cost of a stamp to send it back.

I'm just getting started with audio for videos and this sounded helpful. I expected a "real" book. What I got is a small, 5½" x 4¼", spiral bound publication consisting of 75 pages (including the inside of the back cover.) The type is not particularly small. It looks to be about 12pt to my eye so it's not like they packed a lot of text into a small space.
It does cover a lot of information nonetheless. It is a quirky mix of extremely basic information mixed with nuggets of more advanced tips.
Chapters include: The Basic Audio Kit, Microphones, Microphone patterns, Mixers, Limiters, EQ, Setting Record Levels, MiniCam/DVCam Inputs, Setting Reference Levels, RMS vs Peak, Gain Staging, Audio Q&A, Production Audio Rules, Good Gear, Rental Houses, and an Index.
I'd have liked to see more information on dealing with noise of various sorts, mounting the recorder, Using track marks, audio editing, powering portable equipment, and other relevant topics.

I have very little audio experience but I have an engineering degree from a very well-known university here in the US and I was disappointed that this book was just a collection of what I would consider surface information. Some of it I was not aware of and there were 12 pages of Q & A that were good (the book is 75 pages) but I am a rookie and with a title like "Audio Bootcamp Field Guide" I was expecting more hard earned knowledge from the author rather than stuff you can get readily from a few Google searches.
Discouraged by the book I have decided that "Audio is audio." and anyone can become proficient with some basics then experimenting with their equipment. I will still look for expertise whether from a book or a website, etc .. but if I had a chance to preview this book in a bookstore I would not have bought it.

As advertised, it was really non-technical. After reading it,became apparent that it was not the book I was looking for. With all respect, the price does live up to its content, but probably targeted for the basic and start-ups.

This is a very small book with basic audio information. It is for taking out in the field with you. The pages are laminated and really only for reference for people like me who can't remember which mics are which. Seems a little high priced but I suspect it will come in very handy.

I use the Shure FP33 Field Mixer when we shoot movies and I never felt I was using the mixer to it's fullest capabilities so I decided to try Ford's book. I have several books on audio but none of them had the step by step instructions that Ford's guide had. Following his advice I was able to achieve clearer audio through the mixer than I was getting before so it was money well spent. This guide is very very succient -- it's only 65 pages long and it fits in your pocket at 4"x 5.5". I would have liked to see more pictures and a little more detail in the guide but that may have been self-defeating if you want something you can carry with you. I created my own outine (Step 1, Step 2, etc.)using the Guide's instructions so they are even more condensed when we shoot. But I would have liked a little deeper discussion.

While there is useful information in this text, it's something the reader can find in a larger text (with more information) for the same price. I understand it's intended to be compact, but for the price do yourself a favor; buy another book, take some personal field notes from it and make your own compact field guide. I respect Mr. Ford and his videos online have been invaluable, but there's not enough information in here to justify its price, (even to a novice).

I'm a post mixer who occasionally needs to get out for location work, and this bootcamp has helped me avoid rookie mistakes and given me a very good foundation in getting good sound in the field. Ty's writing style is warm and the advice is easy to understand; best location-recording money I ever spent!

This is a small booklet, not much more than a pamphlet. It's small enough to fit in your back pocket and you can read the whole thing in about 10 minutes. I liked that it comes straight to the point and has usefull basic information for those completely unfamiliar with audio. But I think it's overpriced.
