I was looking for a strong monopod that would handle any large Canon telephoto lens for wildlife/sports. I first looked at the Gitzo GM5541 which is absolutely a first-rate pillar of a monopod but was slightly large for my hands (I have medium sized hands). I ended up returning the Gitzo GM5541 an got the Gitzo GM3551 and I'm glad I did. The GM3551 is longer and more versatile than the GM5541 allowing for "above the crowd" type shots as well as allow its use on uneven ground when hiking or standing on a set of steps. If I were strictly using a monopod for sports only on the sidelines of an event, I'd probably go with the GM5541. Either model will easily handle a Canon 500mm lens or any large lens. The GM5541 and the GM3551 both are very solid, open fast and easy and are top quality. They are both expensive but you won't regret buying one once you figure out which model is right for you. I would recommend an Arca-Swiss type mounting system of lens plates and quick release clamps.

I use a Really Right Stuff Monopod Head (MH-01-40LR: Monopod Head with B2-40 LR Clamp) to mount my Canon 60D with Battery Grip and my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom Lens with or without the Canon 1.4x EF Extender II (Teleconverter). This rig is rock solid and produces razor sharp photos.

I need something tall enough for me at 6ft. This is good for someone 7ft tall. It even collapses enough to fit in a carry on. I use it on my nikon 200-400 and its sturdy too. Its perfect.

I picked up this monopod to replace a Manfrotto 680B which was too short when extended.

I am nearly 6'2" tall and this monopod suits me perfectly. I'm using it with a 70-200 2.8 and a 7D with grip. Even the weight of this setup is nowhere near the capacity of the Gitzo.

I would recommend the all terrain shoe for added sability.

This is my first experience with a Gitzo product and I have to say I am very impressed.

Yes, GM3551 6X Carbon Fiber Monopod is very good. I have used weekly it in the covering of the Brazilian Soccer Championship with my Canon 400mm f/2.8. It is very light, strong and resistant.

I use the Gitzo GM3551 when I go hiking. I took some spectacular shots with it in Colorado. Easy to carry and light weight. It extends quickly and is very sturdy with my Nikon D90. Great product.

Never used a monopod before, but now am loving it. Always used a tripod because of unsteady hands. This monopod helps steady the camera, but is much more versatile and lighter to carry than a tripod. I like this model as it extends tall enough to manage keeping the camera height in good position no matter what variations occur on the ground.

Needed to upgrade from an older Manfrotto due to longer, heavier lens I've since acquired.
Paired this with a RRS MH-01 Pro head and am very pleased.
Weight and size are still less than old monopod and can't put a price on peace of mind with the added support.

purchased in exchange after returning another brand of Carbon fiber monopod. preferred construction of the Gitzo. Using with D700, heavy duty monopod head, and a Wimberley sidekick on occasion for 300 f2.8. folds compactly enough to fit in suitcase.

initially ordered induro CM24, did not like head and returned for the gitzo. solid, works well with the RRS head, have used with Wimberley sidekick for 300 2.8 on a D700. 5 section leg is compact enough for packing in suitcase.

Well balanced, light and long enough for tall people like myself. I had carbon fiber Manfrotto, which was ok, but this is another league. Works well with Nikon D3s and 500/4 lens. The bottom line is if you have the money dont try to compromise and buy anything else.

Wonderful additional stablilty, especially when using long lenses or even when a 105mm Nikkkor Micro lens. The clarity of images is amazing compared to plain hand-held shots. While not a tripod, it is wonderful and can be used in NYC and many places where you could not carry a tripod with you.
