Here's what I like - Outputs NTSC or PAL signal (very rare in any of the current pro-sumer camcorders) - useful for anyone travelling with their camera outside of the US Truly compact - with a LOT of features - great image quality with access to manual controls when required. Dock is great - leave it cabled and lift or slot in the camera - a real bonus. I travel a lot and this feature I LOVE - I check into the room, wire the dock in a few seconds, and I have a video 'holster' in my room with remote! Clunk-click! Nice high resolution 16:9 photo modes. Fast lens across entire range of zoom. Good noise reduction. Latest generation of compression gives a good picture quality for the file size. Very solid and well built - even the plastic battery cover is sturdy with a double thickness 'tooth' on the lock - the product of 30 years of broken latches from a hundred different companies - but better late than never - thanks Sanyo! Possible drawbacks i saw with this camera were - Battery life and lack of expandability - this can be solved with any of the many 5 volt external supplies available for iPods etc or with more expensive professional solutions such as [@] No Optical stabiliser - only Digital It is lacking in this department, the digital stabilisation is not good for some shooting styles - Ok for photos. Bear in mind that the low light performance of this camera is exceptionally good, equal to or better than anything at the price. If you plan to use it handheld for anything serious - I recommend you get a tripod or small counter-weighting device. Colour balance is funky outdoors - but it has manual set mode so with an Expodisc or similar white balance tool (sheet of paper) this thing is very capable of delivering pleasing colours. In short - it makes me smile to pick this thing up, knowing it will respond instantly for fun or catch great results with a professional's tweaking touch, while always looking like a prop from a Bond movie. Something of a positive feel about the whole experience. Sanyo - well done (but please add optical stabilisation to the next one if you can keep it in the price!) - and can we have a 'trigger' for recording or is that too gun-like?

As a former wedding and event videographer, I have a bit of experience with cameras. I bought this because of the form factor, HD specs, and most importantly, the price. For [$] it is a tremendous value, however, in the end, I sent it back because of one major flaw...the Electronic Image Stabilization. My usage of the camera is only for capturing daily family events as well as vacations. This camera has excellent picture quality and does a fantastic job in low-light situations (primarily just shooting around the house, even at night with marginal lighting..I was actually amazed at the images it could capture in a room with only a lamp turned on to provide light). The form factor is also a huge plus as it makes holding the camera MUCH more natural. In fact, the form factor really made me think very hard as to whether I wanted to give this unit up. Controls were easy to get to, menu navigation was great, and just the 'point and shoot' was so easy because of the pistol grip style form factor. So why did I return it? The Electronic Image Stabilization was just horrible on any zoom level over 4x, making a very poor outdoor, live action camera unless restricted to a tripod. While being handheld, once I hit 5x or greater zoom, the image was jerky and jittery to the point of almost nausea while watching the playback on a 46" LCD TV. While zooming in at 10X on a static object, you could visibly watch the EIS pull the picture back and forth as the camera wavered slightly in my hands. If my hand drifted left, the image would begin to drift and then jerk back into place causing a rippling effect in the picture. While filming my daughter and family dog running around in a field, I just couldn't get any good footage unless they were close to me. Once I zoomed past 4.5x, the image was just to jittery to enjoy watching.I really, REALLY wanted to love this camera, and returning it was a difficult decision. There are so many plusses, including the bang for the buck value. But in the end, the only video that I truly enjoyed watching was the indoor close up shots. I ended up buying a Panasonic HDC-HS250 so I could test them side by side and the Panasonic's Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) absolutely smoked the Sanyo's EIS (although the Panasonic didn't quite perform as well in low light, although still acceptable). I spent twice as much on the Panasonic, but I will be truly happy with the results for the life of the camera instead of always wishing the Image Stabilization were better.

I find the camera very easy to hold while filming. The review button is less easy. My finger is too big. I have trouble reviewing with fast forward and rewind or slow motion, also changing from one to another of my filmiong sessions. I think this will improve with use. I have just gotten my camera.

Comments about Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD1010 High Definition Camcorder (Black):
I bought this camera after a lot of research for a very specific purpose - shooting documentaries for the web. I wanted a camera i can carry around easily all the time, that shoots HD, that's cheap, that i can plug a mic in, and that has a good lens and shoots well in all light conditions.
I am completely satisfied will all of my requirements. The Xacti is the lightest and easiest thing to carry around, i just put it in my handbag, it's almost the size of a point-and-shoot. The fact that it shoots HD video is still very amusing to me, because it looks like a toy when i hold it in my hand. The quality of the video certainly meets my standards, and for its price, it actually exceeds all expectations one can have. The camera performs really well in low light (when it's in manual setting, there is a lot of grain in auto). Image stabilization is so-so when the lens is zoomed in all the way and the use of a tripod is necessary. The fact that one can plug in a mic and headphones to this little camera is amazing to me. I have manual control over every setting i would like to (i am missing a focusing ring, but i don't think any handycam has that). Battery life is good - yesterday i kept it on for 3 hours, shooting on and off at a conference and the battery had one bar left in the end. The ease of transferring files from the camera to the computer is certainly a plus, it's like transferring pics from your photo camera. You get the videos in mp4 format, perfect for editing. (I haven't used any of the software that comes with the camera so I can't comment on that).
The only one flaw that I can think of is the fact that this camera has a problem with overheating pretty quickly, especially when you shoot hand-held. I didn't have a problem with the heat for the three hours at the conference when I held it on a tripod, but a week ago I was shooting another event, holding the camera in my hand for about an hour and it got really hot to the point where I got a warning to turn it off. So, if you're planning to shoot for a long time, use a tripod.
The unique design is actually very comfortable, I think it's more comfortable to hold this camera then the other small handycams out there.
To anyone who is clear they're not planning to shoot an aesthetic masterpiece on this camera, I would recommend this baby any day, without even thinking about it.

I'm a multimedia developer and I've been playing around with this camera for the past 2 weeks and really enjoy it. I used this camera at a previous post production position and remembered how easy it was to use this camera, so that's why I bought one. I would recommend getting the wide angle and fish eye lenses to add to this camera as well. That's my next purchase. 1080p video is great although I've been mostly shooting 720p with it to keep the files sizes down. There is a 300fps slow motion setting on this camera as well which shoots 640x480 video. The slow motion quality is pretty good in outdoor situations, but indoors it's really grainy. If you're looking for a basic HD camera to shoot some home videos or are making short films, web videos, etc. this is a great little camera to get the job done. Good price point too.

i bought this camcorder just a few weeks ago - it works great, lives up to all of it's features and i can't get over how tiny it is!best features:- automatic/manual toggle for most settings- 300 fps slow motion capture- 10x optical zoom- compact size- video/picture resolution options - amazingonly ways to make it better:- drivers for mac webcam!! one of the reasons I bought this camera was to stream video online with my mac - but there are no drivers for it (yet)- a USB line from the camera would have been nice - I won't be able to mount the camera on a tripod to use the webcam feature since you can only connect the camera to a computer from the dock- lens adapters: a cautionary tale - I bought a telephoto and wide angel lens package from a popular online auction website (50$ compared to 80$ each for the Sanyo brand) and while the lens are great and work beautifully - the adapter ring didn't fit onto my camera. No worries though, I bought one from [@] for 7$ [...]Overall, this is a great camera - it's features to price ratio is great[...]and in the purchase not only did I get the camera, but also a protective lens and two 16GB SD cards - an amazing deal!

I bought this for fun, to always have a camcorder with me. But after several weeks with it, I'm convinced that I could use it in a pinch for my government job, getting shots at times and in places where I didn't have the big camera handy. Considering its size, price and convenience, it's a winner. It feels solid, handles well and is easy to use. The external microphone jack, remote control and manual controls give it potential far beyond the average point-&-shoot; these are the exact reasons I bought it. The menu design has been criticized by others, but I find no problem with it. Besides, the camera has a "simple" setting for avoiding the more sophisticated control options.
I'm not crazy about the image stabilization; it "sticks" a little, and now I'd rather just watch my caffeine level and hold it loosely. I use mine with a wireless microphone, and a serious shortcoming for my own projects is the lack of visual audio level indication. But the headphone jack does allow monitoring for someone not in front of the camera.
An unexpected "disadvantage" is the amount of attention it attracts. People on the street are fascinated and impressed by it. I had expected to be ignored just like any other tourist, but this unwanted attention can sometimes be a nuisance.
This must be one the best deals in camcorder history.

The camcorder is very easy to set-up and use. You don't need any manual for it, I just popped the box open and started filming, no training necessary. Movie quality is good, picture quality too. Low light situations are handled very good since its diaphragm can go to F1.8. Image stabilisation is not perfect when you use more than 6x zoom but with a tripod its perfect.

This is the best camcorder I have used to date. The camera works in low light very well. I have had all kinds of from Aiptek to Canon to Samsung and this is the jewel of the lot. I make videos with my daughter in normal room light and they turn out very well. Since I started looking for a SD card memory camcorder I haven't had any that record well in normal room light. This Sanyo HD 1010 is a joy to use and the price from B&H was just right for this quality of camera. I can't find anything not to like about this little camera. Some say that the IS is no good, but I say how about holding the camera still. When I was using 35mm film cameras there was no such thing as IS, I think we are to spoiled. I have the IS turned on and it seems to work just fine.

For what it is and the price the camera works great, I purchased it for a trip to Europe so I wouldn't have to lug around my other larger cameras. One thing is it shows full frame in screen then crops about 10% when recording.
Unfortunately mine decided to stop recognizing the batteries. I had it charging on supplied base with a Sanyo battery on it, says full charge when plugged in however once AC power is disconnected camera dies. Same story with additional battery I purchased.
Now comes the fun part of trying to contact customer support, the 800# supplied is no longer in service and their website is straight out of 1998. It gets stuck in an infinite loop saying a field was left blank yet never returns to said field then when starting over the submit button is disabled.
Same deal with trying to find a service center- after info is entered the site tracks back to opening page.
At the price, it can be seen as a disposable camera so if seen as such you won't be disappointed, if it's you're only cam I'd look elsewhere.
