Ikelite 3944.90 SubStrobe DS-160 Digital Package w/ TTL Single Sync Cord
The Ikelite Digital SubStrobe DS-160 is compatible with all Ikelite TTL digital camera systems. The strobe will also work with older TTL film cameras including the Nikonos system. The included TTL sync cord will connect to any Ikelite type bulkhead. Use a compatible TTL system and enjoy perfect automatic exposure and an increased number of flashes per full charge. When used in manual mode, the DS-160 offers 10 power settings in half-stop increments for precise control over your exposure. The DS-160 features special electronic circuitry that allows use with digital cameras with preflash metering. The strobe is also completely compatible with all non-preflash systems.
The strobe offers 160 watt/seconds of power in a small package and has a coverage angle of 100 degrees with a diffuser. The SubStrobe DS-160 recycles virtually instantaneously when fired at fractional power. This is true whether in TTL or manual mode. At full power, you still get an incredible 1.5 second recycle time.
A bright built-in five-watt LED aiming light is perfect for use as a focusing light or dive light on night dives. The beam is even, concentrated, and automatically turns off and on when the strobe fires.
The #3944.90 DS-160 package includes rechargeable NiMH battery pack, flash diffuser, deluxe ball-joint strobe arm and TTL sync cord for Ikelite bulkheads. The required smart charger is also included.

First impressions, it a very good strobe, it has a very good battery power. I used it for two dives a day using the strobe for at least 500 times and it was still on. It receives the signal from the camera very quickly.
The only thing I think needs to be improved is the arms.

These are well constructed and have plenty of light. I was a bit disappointed with the arm assembly though and wound up getting 1.25 ball and arm set for the handle mount portion. The regular 1" handle mount is too long for a normal size DSLR. B&H was the only dealer on line that EVERYTHING I needed for my set up and now it all goes together fine. I recommend getting two complete sets to get both chargers.

First, the strobes are very well built with sturdy quality materials. I like design with the two independently sealed compartments and the simplicity of the connectors.
The output is consistent and rapid recycling is as advertised. Using TTL metering with my Ikelite housed Nikon D-80, my exposures were consistently first rate even on my very close 105mm macro shots at varying depths.
The controls are easily accessed and simple and easy to use.
Buoyancy seemed excellent.
The ball-joint supports are sturdy and easily adjusted and did not seem to loosen during the dives.
After 9 dives, no complaints only compliments, though I will be interested to see how they hold up over the long run. I'm not anticipating problems.
