A memory card is not included with the camera.
Get a high-capacity memory card so you don't get caught without memory.
The 10.5 megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor employs large microlenses over each pixel to reduce noise and enhance sensitivity up to ISO 1600. The camera also incorporates the Highlight Tone Priority and High-ISO Noise Reduction functions (previously found only on Canon's Professional Digital SLRs) and the camera is equipped with Canon's Auto Lighting Optimizer technology, which corrects image brightness and contrast automatically to prevent underexposure with backlit scenes.
The EOS Rebel XS is capable of continuously capturing 3 frames per second for bursts of over 500 images, or until the memory card is full, to help photo enthusiasts capture split second action at just the right moment. Plus, the camera is equipped with a host of useful creative controls, including shutter speeds ranging from 1/4000 - 30 seconds plus Bulb, and a wide range of exposure modes from fully automatic to fully manual.
The 2.5-inch high-resolution LCD monitor makes it easy for users to review images and scroll through the menus, and also features a broadened color gamut and a wide viewing perspective in all directions. Furthermore the EOS Rebel XS camera features Live View - which allows users to frame shots through the LCD screen rather than the viewfinder - which is particularly useful when shooting at odd angles or in situations when looking through the viewfinder is impractical.
The Rebel XS DSLR utilizes Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning system. This involves a Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit that shakes dust particles off of the low-pass filter in front of the sensor, along with post processing with the supplied Digital Photo Professional software. Here the camera maps any spots that may remain on the sensor and subsequently subtracting dust spots from the final image during post processing.
The camera utilizes Secure Digital (SD & SDHC) memory cards, making it the perfect upgrade for users who are already using SD cards with a point-and-shoot camera, and it is fully compatible with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses, as well as EX-series Speedlites, an optional Battery Grip, and remote control and viewfinder accessories. In regards to its overall design, the EOS Rebel XS camera features a substantial yet streamlined profile, with curved edges, contoured surfaces, conveniently placed controls and comfortably constructed rubber grip and thumb rest that all contribute to fatigue-reducing hand fit. The camera body is constructed of a rugged yet lightweight combination of stainless steel and polycarbonate embedded with glass fiber, and the chassis exterior is enrobed in a durable ABS and Polycarbonate resin that is resistant to impact damage.

I'm a complete camera amateur, and my experience was just limited to camera phones. I didn't even own a point and shoot before. I picked up this camera and it is extraordinarily easy to learn. It has several basic modes (Full auto, portrait, landscape, macro, action, night portrait and no flash). You can just set these modes and just shoot, but after a few days of reading the manual, I just stuck solely to the creative modes. The design of the camera is very good, as it is light weight and doesn't feel like a piece of plastic that will fall apart in your hands. The camera is fast in jpeg mode, allowing for continuous shooting at 3 fps until the memory is filled up.
I've mainly used the Rebel XS for macro work with extension tubes and macro filters but I've also used it for family gatherings. I just recently went to a graduation with it, and I had to get some shots off quickly. The Rebel XS did not disappoint. I made every shot that I wanted, and I could quickly adjust features if I needed to do so without missing a beat. The autofocus is remarkably fast, and with the right camera settings, I could get perfectly focused shots from a car moving at 80 mph. Even with the higher ISO levels, I found image quality to be top notch. Though, there are several drawbacks.
The most major is that the raw shooting mode is much slower (about 1.5 fps with a small buffer). I didn't tend to notice this very much since when I was shooting Raw it was rarely continuous. My raw shots were usually at still objects. Though, if you want to shoot motion in raw you might want to look elsewhere. In terms of other small problems, there is no way to use a remote shutter; you have to purchase a wired one. This camera also doesn't shoot video. For me this isn't a drawback, since I don't intend to use a camera for video, but it might put a few people off. Lastly, live view is a bit of a pain to get to, having to go through the menu to activate it.
Overall, I find that the Rebel XS is a great way to enter the world of DSLR. It isn't intimidating and it is easy to pick up all the features. The drawbacks weren't major for me and did not hinder use at all, I whole-heartedly recommend this product to people looking for their first DSLR.

I have had a great experience so far with the EOS Rebel xs SLR camera. B&H's Patrick recommended it to me for my line of work. I am not very camera savy, and the customer service was amazing. He was so helpful to guide me on the basics with this camera and my pics are turning out beautiful! I am having a little bit of trouble getting the color right on some pink still objects, otherwise I give it an A.

I used my sister's Canon Rebel and loved it so I had to buy myself one! I have no complains and would recommend it to anyone. I'm not a professional but I've been using it for a college photojournalism class and it's given me no problems thus far.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel XS SLR Digital Camera (Black) with 18-55mm IS Lens Kit:
I was torn between the Nikon D3100 and the Canon Rebel XS - but ultimately chose the Canon for two reasons:
1. It has good low-light performance (though not as stellar as the D3100)
2. I was planning to spend about $150 on accessories and therefore wanted to buy the cheaper one
All things considered, I am happy with the product. I am still in the learning phase, but love the ease of use.
The AF did not focus when I tried to shoot colorful umbrellas. I had to change the focus point to hunt for a line; the AF was good after this.
The lens barrel did have a teeny scratch on it, but I don't think that's grounds for taking any action (returning etc). The camera takes beautiful pictures and that's what matters.

I have always loved photography and used my parents' cameras for my hobby, so I finally decided to buy myself a nice camera. I love the sharpness of each image and all of the options for automatic and manual settings. This camera took crystal clear portrait photos even outside at nighttime. It also really does justice to the beauty of natural light on a person. It's lightweight but also really sturdy which is something I really like about it.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel XS SLR Digital Camera (Black) with 18-55mm IS Lens Kit:
I bought this camera three years ago as a present for myself. At first I loved it and was interested in learning everything about it. Once spending some time with the camera, I have become bored with it. Bottom line, if you are using this as a beginner on just the automatic setting - great camera. If you're planning on being a committed photographer, spend the extra money and get the 60D, 7D, or the 5D Mark II. It's not worth having to buy both.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel XS SLR Digital Camera (Black) with 18-55mm IS Lens Kit:
Do not buy this camera. It will work fine for awhile, but once you start getting the error 99 message (a very non-specific code), you are screwed. Lens contact issue? Maybe. Using an (non-Canon) incompatible lens? Maybe. Battery issue? Maybe. Card issue? Maybe. The potential fixes for this range from the simple: using a pencil eraser on the lens contacts and/or removing the battery, card, lens and letting it sit for 20 minutes. The worst: sending it in to Canon for repairs. My internet research indicates that this bug is quite common and is a huge source of frustration for owners of this type of camera. Canon should be on top of this.

I needed a digital SLR camera to document drawings. The image quality is fantastic, and it was the most affordable SLR I could find. Easy to use, I like that it records both in large and RAW format at the same time. I did not need the video feature found in the newer cameras.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel XS SLR Digital Camera (Black) with 18-55mm IS Lens Kit:
I am a photographer by hobby, I just go out and shoot all the time for fun, and this is the first SLR camera I have purchased. I am in love! It is soo wonderful, lightweight, but it still has qualities that heavier and more expensive cameras have. I am so pleased with my purchase, and I would definitely recommend this camera for a first time SLR user. It's easy to use, the features are nice, and you can learn how to use it really quickly. The one drawback is that it does not have video capability, but I still love it so much!
