The Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit from Netgear allows you to extend your home LAN without the need for costly and time-consuming wiring. The kit includes two wall-plugged Ethernet bridges; each plugs into an AC wall outlet for network connectivity. The system can communicate at speeds up to 200Mbps, allowing you to leverage your home's electrical wiring to set up a network. You can even use it as part of a wireless network to help eliminate "dead spots" in coverage.

Data over Electrical Wires
Transmitting data over your home's electrical wiring allows you to set up a network without having to run CAT5 cabling between rooms. This is an ideal solution for users who would like to set up a home network.
Eliminate Wi-Fi Dead Spots
Wi-Fi users often experience "dead spots" in their homes. That is, areas where you simply cannot get a wireless signal. You can use this kit to eliminate those dead spots without the need to run any additional cables, expanding the wireless options in your home.
Simple Installation
Simply plug one bridge into your router and into a wall outlet. the other can be placed anywhere in your home that Ethernet connectivity is required, provided that a power outlet is available.

    Beware of Incompatible Versions

Comments about Netgear Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit:

These work all right, although, depending on your wiring and the location of your outlets, your mileage may vary. But there's one "gotcha" -- the new version of this model is incompatible with the previous one. There's no way to tell this from the product listing, because both kits use the same model number (XAVB101), and nothing in the documentation or on Netgear's website suggests the problem. Nevertheless, on the adapters themselves, the later model says "v2" (for version 2), and these will not work with the original version (which display no version number). Physically, the two versions are almost identical, except that the new adapters are white and the older ones are gray.

Comments about Netgear Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit:

When I heard about the concept of plugging your network into your home electricity, it sounded really scary and I was very skeptical. But I needed a solution of bringing WIRED network to another part of my house and wireless just didn't cut it.

Someone told me about this product and I plugged it in and was up and running in about 5 minutes!!

It's been working now for two weeks without a hitch. I have wired four machines into one of these (with a network 'splitter') and they all work great.

I bought these to connect my Sonos wireless music players. The Sonos system can play Internet radio and stream music between rooms using wi-fi, but our plaster walls and our neighbors' wi-fi caused too much interference. The Netgear Powerline Ethernet adapters have solved these problems: no more interference or signal drop-outs. Set-up was as easy as plugging them in. They're not as fast as a hard-wired Ethernet connection when watching streaming video on a laptop, but they're perfect for my purposes. Highly recommended.

My router is on the first floor. I connected this into the wall outlet and my router in 20 seconds. Then I connected the other one in the wall and in my desktop on the second floor in 30 seconds. 30+20, it started working in 50 seconds. That means instant connection just as you were wired to your modem's Ethernet port. The only thing was that the light in the middle was orange. I checked the manual and it says that if it is orange, I am getting around 80 mpbs and that I should move the router closer. But thats not possible. I don't know what's the range on this product. But the second floor bedroom and the router on the first floor is only 50 feet away. But my desktop shows 100 mbps LAN network speed. Whatever it is, action movies that were getting stuck on each frame is now seamlessly streaming thru. But the question now is if I can get more of these and connect my other devices which will work off of the one that is already connected to the router.

The powerline adapter was super easy to set up and I've had no speed issues. I got it so I could stream video across my network with my HD Homerun which I just purchased. If I have any speed problems with that I'll update this post. Pretty excited how well it works. I didn't want to deal with wireless for my wife's computer because of how flaky is can be at times. My only issue is that they are so darn expensive! I can't verify how secure the connection is because I don't know how to even check that. I turned that on too and it was really easy.

Plug it in, and it does all the work!I did a LOT of research (as I always do with tech purchases), and this product has the highest user ratings/reviews...and B&H has the BEST price available for a NEW kit! I only have 7Mbps download speed capability from Qwest, but this setup gives me fast, CONSISTENT speed and RELIABLE downloading of on-demand movies/shows. I have yet to lose a connection! Thanks B&H for [...] awesome product quality. I will definitely buy from B&H again.

Comments about Netgear Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit:

We are using six XABV101 Netgear AC Ethernet Adapters which have all worked very well in a home environment, without any configuration requirements, other than plugging in the cables. The transmissions even get through a breaker switch, and travel up to about 500 hundred feet away for our more distant adapter. Also, I don't mind avoiding the 2.4 GHz electromagnetic field (EMF) disruptions that wireless routers inflict against billions of our cellular repair processes that are on going all the time, particularly in an indoor environment which is close to these radiation sources. So, in that sense these AC Adapters should be a healthy technology and Netgear may well have done a good job with these adapters in the home environment.

However, one Netgear AC adapter I placed about 1000 feet away did work OK for a while then stopped receiving, so I moved it to only 500 feet away and it started working again. So now at the 500 foot distance, I connected a Netgear AC Adapter to an ordinary D-Link router and got the extra 500 feet coverage I needed, although with a weak signal. Now I'm adding a small 15 dB parabolic antenna with 20 degree coverage (Pasadena Networks, Laird Technologies) to the D-Link Router which should boost the signal strength by about 32 times to cover the last 3 target areas, up to about 1500 feet away.

Today, I found out that there are several new Netgear AC Adapters including the XAV2001, XAV2501 and XAVB2001 which are supposed to work better in the 1000 to 2000 foot range. Earlier, I was told by Netgear that the 200 megabit per second AC Adapters such as the XAVB101 were designed to reach 5000 feet, which seems to be 10 times further than I can reliably reach. Then today, I was told by Netgear that the units were designed to reach only 30 feet, so I mentioned that I was reaching 500 feet after going through a breaker without any problems, and just described the type of information anyone might need regarding distance and breaker losses.

So, it now appears that Netgear India actually provides no technical data regarding distance or reliability and very little regarding speed or even the basic options available, which makes it almost impossible to figure anything out. The Netgear technical people also have little to no technical information available to themselves, which only suggests that trying to configure a system with these products can be an exasperating experience. Manufacturers are acting in a impaired fashion when they avoid putting their technical data on their web sites, as nearly all companies did 30 years ago in their printed advertising literature. I'm not asking for any miracles, simply the basic facts which are available and essential to avoid wasting hundreds of hours of personal time every year.

Of course, I would avoid upgrading to any new units, simply because I don't have the time to do all the trial and error testing required for everything Netgear, D-Link, Linksys and Belden place on the market, while they unfortunately choose to conceal the information their engineers obviously have, which their marketing people then refuse to provide. No doubt, their engineers are being pressured into put new products on the market very fast and not necessarily products that work really well, which is a good reason to avoid buying very many of these products with unknown specifications.

Naturally, manufacturers have an obligation to offer the factually relevant data, since we are partners of sorts when we buy their products. While I understand that adversarial litigation is usually malicious, however this is a great opportunity for a massive class action case to encourage the availability of all the relevant specifications, the test results, as well as the reliability data, along with the configuration problems being encountered with thousands of electronic products, all of which is readily available information, which unsurprisingly could also save retailers from having to deal with millions of returns and the millions of frustrated customers who don't actually have the information available to choose a useful product.

Comments about Netgear Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit:

Plugged them in and immediately had a connection. I am using them to connect my desktop after finding there is no Win 7 driver for the wifi adapter I had been using. A new wifi adapter may have cost a little less, but with these units there will be no hassle no matter how I boot up (Win 7, Ubuntu, XP).

My wife is glad I didn't drill a hole between the first and second floors to run an Ethernet cable.

I have my wireless n router hooked to one of these units and the other side hooked to my LGBD390 bluray player and I'm streaming enough data to receive Vudu HDX video quality without running wires all through my house!!! It saved me from twisting myself into our crawlspace and running new Cat6 cable 150 feet.
