I have owned most of the P&S (or related) cameras most here will be looking at; it's a long list, but includes all the previous Panny LX model numbers; the Leica D2 and Panasonic LC-1 (two copies); Canons too many to enumerate; and sundry Olympus and Nikon models.
This camera is the best of the lot. Why, you may ask?
1. Low distortion, fast (ƒ2–2.8) lens. Never underestimate how often you will need to use ƒ2, rather than (for example) ISO 400. Faster lens is better than higher ISO, always.
2. Manual controls that *work*. All important controls (EV, ISO, aperture or shutter speed, recording format.... etc., either already have a dedicated control, or can be assigned to the Fn button.
3. A short, but accurate, zoom. Now, I may say that I would prefer a 24–85, but 24–60 (and low distortion at that) beats a 28–70, or a 35–100 every time, for me. YMMV, of course. Wide angle lenses rule on the street.
4. Price. I own a brace (is that two, or more?) of pro. DSLRs, but all are big and relatively heavy. I don't reach for any of them when I go for a walk. OTOH, the LX3 is with me *all the time*, so may just catch that "unforgettable moment".
5. *Only* 10Mp. Seriously, folks: when was the last time you printed 16x 20? Never? Yeah, me too. Get real. 10Mp is all anyone needs, for snaps. This one can print much bigger, if needed. Otherwise, pick up your $5,000+ body, $2,000 lens, and a back brace, and try to look inconspicuous. Lots of luck!
6. Simple controls for EV, and flash compensation that respect each other. I usually have mine (Flash EV) set to somewhere between -1.0–2.0EV: perfect fill flash (set to "forced" flash). Works a treat.
7. Only 'con' is the camera is not waterproof, and not 24–85/2–2.8.
Let's see that on the LX4, if anyone's reading in the Panny camp!
A brilliant little camera, all around.

In many ways this is an ideal camera. I have been very pleased with the image quality of the JPEGs, the size, and its general feel when I use it when I use it as a "dumb" Point & Shoot. But if I want to use the more advanced features such as RAW files and manual exposure (which is why I paid premium $ for this camera), I run into trouble.First, the RAW files it produces are not compatible with Adobe Camera RAW (CR). It appears that the main reason is that there is barrel distortion in the LX-3 Leica lens which is corrected automatically by the JPEG processor in the LX-3. It appears that Adobe will not build in this feature to CR, which is understandable given the philosophy behind RAW - let the user do what they want with the data - see [@]The other problem I have is with the manual controls for shutter/aperture. The joystick is not always responsive. so unless one is photographing a static scene, it is easy to become frustrated. Also, getting the lightmeter on the screen requires holding down the shutter button "just so", which has resulted in many unintended images as the shutter was accidentally released. I can't say I'm devastated by all of this, but I am definitely disappointed. If I knew of this beforehand, I would have held off in buying this camera.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 Digital Camera (Black):
The fast, wide lens is wonderful. Excellent for social situations (parties and get-togethers) -- fast lens permits available light and low light performance is good for a compact camera. The lack of a long zoom isn't a problem for me; even with my DSLR (and old film SLRs before that), I am shooting between 24mm and 55mm most of the time. And wide angle is a lot more useful to me while traveling than a long zoom.
I've had the camera for over 2 years now, and I've carried it all over, yet it still looks good, feels good, and works reliably.

I'm a SAHM/freelancer/blogger who needed a compact camera that was borderline DSLR. I was close to buying the new Sony Nex-3, but couldn't fit the price into my budget. Based on reviews here, I instead bought the Lumix DMC-LX3 for half the price.
I thought the lack of viewfinder would bug me, but the large screen makes it a non-issue.
I love how well it performs in low-light conditions. The wide angle is awesome. And I'm really pleased with the quality of pics I've taken so far. One of my Halloween pics has gotten rave reviews from friends.
I haven't found anything I don't like about the camera yet.

I used the product on my trip to Romania.
It is small enough to be portable, yet give excellent quality photos.
The settings are easy enough for a Novice to use, but there is enough functionality for a more professional photographer to be happy.
It is pretty fast, but a digital SLR is much faster.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 Digital Camera (Black):
The most attractive feature of the Lumix LX3 is the hot shoe which allows you to couple any external flash and other accessories c=such as optical view finder. It allows me to use many old gears from the early mechanical age. First I used a 20-year old Metz 20BC4 with it in Manual mode. The pictures are stunning. It is a simple auto flash. I set it at ISO 100 f/5.6 then I manually adjusted the f-stop and shutter speed with the joy-stick. The camera can be controlled through the many switches and dials without diving into pages of menu.
The 46mm filter adapter tube will allow you to connect the camera to many accessories besides filters. It let me connect a ring flash such as the Vivitar Macroflash 5000 Macro Ring Flash with Gudie# 18. I took some close-up images in f/8, 1/1000s. I used a Nikon AS-15 sync to fire the shots. It is simply fun. Most of these add-on are 20-year old from the Nikon F3 and Lecia M2. The LX3 or LX5 allow you to enjoy photography once again. I will bring it to the next dinner party coupling it with my Metz 45CL4 handle flash. I am sure there will be lots of "wow"....

I use this camera when my DSLR is too big to bring, such as concerts. It takes great shots in low light. FAST lens 2.0-2.8. It also shoots RAW. Very easy to use. The only downside is the short zoom, so you have to buy front row seats to your favorite rock show. But hey, who doesn't to be front row anyway!

Great camera, very impressive F-stop of 2.0
Fairly easy to use controls, good battery life and a nice size (not too large and not too small).
Zoom is the only drawback in my opinion.
Video/sound quality could be better - my iPhone 4 footage is actually more impressive in day light.
Panasonic is definitely out-doing Nikon and Canon in this category.

when my friend showed me his lx3 camera, i was amazed at the size and the quality of the camera. also he had the barrel entension on with a uv filter. i always had uv filters on my 35mm camera lens to protect the lens. my other brand digital point and shoot camera has no provision for filters, so i was sold on the lx3. with the price drop of the lx3 due to the new lx5 i had to get the lx3 for myself.

manuel focus function and AF tracking options are really great. also under low light it's performance is awesome. In addition to that while using high ISO values it's noise is very low. AT 16:9 Aspect ratio you can record HD(720p) videos.

Anyone expecting this to perform like a DSLR is out of their minds!!! This is a point and shoot and it has it's limitations, but by comparison to the point and shoots that I have used...this camera is Amazing! Good enough for travel photos, and the flash control is gorgeous for travel portraits. Might upgrade to the LX5

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 Digital Camera (Black):
I purchased this camera from B&H. I'm an old Nikon pro shooter for the last couple decades. There isn't a whole to tell you about this camera that you haven't already read.
Like a lot of pro shooters I wanted a smaller camera to carry around. One of the things I did was to download the PDF manuals of all the cameras I was considering. In addition to the Lumix DMC-LX3, I looked at the Sumsung TL500/EX1, Canon S90 and G11. Sorry, Nikon wasn't in the running.
I was surprised to see noise in the raw image of the LX3 at the base ISO of 80. Just used to larger sensors. Of course, the included software is useless. But still very happy with the camera.
I also chose this camera for the battery charger. It charges outside the camera and is small with folding prongs, the part the plugs into the wall. It may sound minor but this was a big plus for backpacking into places like Death Valley. I small charger that can be kept with you, and no wires.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 Digital Camera (Black):
I researched this camera for several months before taking the plunge. This little Lumix delivers! It takes amazingly sharp images from the fast Leica-designed lens. It is easy to use and has some great scene modes such as Starry Night and Pinhole. It also shoots very nice black and white images. To my surprise, it also allows you to shoot square format images. This was a big deal for me but may not be for other users. Last, but not least, it's Macro Mode is fantastic. I find myself looking for tiny subjects just to see what I get.
As indicated in other reviews, the zoom range is very limited so think about this before your purchase. The battery life is nothing to write home about. If you take time exposures, expect it to run dead in a hurry.
In low light, it focuses quickly and allows you to capture very natural images due to the f/2 lens. I recommend the filter adapter and a Skylight filter so the camera is ready to shoot at all times.
Overall, it is a great machine.

I wanted to find an in-between camera that I could take on the fly but offered some DSLR qualities. After research and reading the reviews on B&H, I decided this was the best one for the price range I was looking for! Although the newer model, the LX5, has come out, I'm still glad I chose the LX3 since there doesn't seem to be too drastic of a difference in features for me to pay the extra bill and then some. For that to happen, I'll be waiting for the next next model, the LX7, instead. Anyway, the LX3 is great and has a bunch of features that I'm still learning about. Read your manual! I will be taking this buddy with me on an Asia trip next month instead of lugging my DSLR. I believe I will need an extra battery, though. All-in-all, great camera (in this price range) that's in between a point-and-shoot and DSLR!

Recently shot 900 photos at a mixed ethnicity evening cocktail party using the LX3. The camera was great at quickly adjusting exposure levels to adjust for skin tone in the low light environment.
Shots in modest light were good but those in very poor lighting came out a little grainy.
Shot video during the toast and the clips came out great however the audio isn't anything to rave about.
I would definitely recommend the camera.
