The 52mm Ultraviolet UV(0) Haze HD (High Density) Filter from Hoya is a wise initial investment. It helps protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs.

This filter, with its hardened glass, has 4x the tensile strength of traditional filters of similar fabrication. This filter is also of great use in today's digital market where sensors are more sensitive to reflected light. Hoya incorporates special coatings that reduce these internal reflections and, thereby, promote a clearer, brighter and sharper image. The multi-coating used in this filter is made up of 8 layers on each side that promote 99.35% light transmission.

Hoya is one of the largest manufacturers of glass in the filter industry. In collaboration with its parent company, Tokina Optical, Hoya continues to strive to produce some of the best glass on the market. Currently, they hold 40% of the world's market for optical glass.

The advantage of most Hoya filters is that Hoya puts, at least, one layer of anti-reflective coating on each side of their glass. It is not bare glass. Even if the glass is not multi-coated, this kind of production tends to minimize flare and ghosting.

Comments about Hoya 52mm Ultraviolet UV Haze HD (High Density) Digital Glass Filter:

I've tried a lot of UV filters: Nikon L37C, Hoya sHMC, Heliopan SH-PMC, B+W MRC, Leica and Zeiss. They are all superb filters. However, Nikon no longer makes the L37C that was my staple. In night time tests, I found that the L37c produced some ghosting, but that the Hoya sHMC had the minimum amount of ghosting. The only German filter in this test was the B+W MRC, which was intermediate between the Nikon and Hoya sHMC. So, for a while I used the Hoya super HMC on all of my new Nikkors. The only problem with the sHMC Hoya is that they can be hard to clean. The coating has a tooth to it that seems to attract grease with contact. The heliopans behave similarly. The tooth makes it harder to clean using lens paper. I usually have to resort to a microfiber cloth for cleaning.

I bought this new Hoya filter basically to protect the front element of my Voigtlander 15mm 4.5 in M mount. This super wide angle benefits from having no filter at all, or the thinnest glass to prevent problems with refraction of edge rays. Not only do the new HD glass filters have thin glass, they also have a very easy to clean coating. The amount of light reflecting off the filter when viewed obliquely is about the same as the heliopan SH-PMC or B+W filters, which is to say almost none.

The filter ring is nice, solid, and anodized in matte black. It spins on and off without binding.
As with all Hoya filters, they come out of the box spotless. You don't have to clean the filter first before mounting on the lens.

Comments about Hoya 52mm Ultraviolet UV Haze HD (High Density) Digital Glass Filter:

These filters are so amazingly clear your not sure there is even any glass in betweeen the black ring. They also do a great job of repelling fingerprints. My biggest problems with filters is trying to get that one speck of whatever off my lens, never having a cloth or lens pen when i need it I will of course use my finger. With these filters it doesn't matter I cannot leave a smudge or a fingerprint. + According to others they are very difficult to break, I have been very careful with mine so can't really comment on this. Either way, so far these filters deliver.

I use this filter on my Panasonic GF1's 14-45 lens. It really repels dirt and is easy to keep clean. The optics are extremely clear, you can hardly see the filter when looking at the front of the lens. Worth the money.

If you care about your lens, get one of these. Not only does it aid in outdoor photos, it protects your lens coating as long as I have it on the lens, which is all the time! I have one for my 18-55mm and my 35mm 1.8/f. Don't leave home without it!

No worries about spoiling them with excessive polishing.
The downside is they are expensive.

The install looks clean and professional. Cost is about the only thing is not so great for average consumer.
