Twenty-eight shooting modes are built into the camera to cover many common shooting situations including Candle, Sports and Underwater modes to take perfect shots with a minimum of fuss and effort.

Other unique features include the tap control feature that lets users access select camera features by simply tapping the camera, Face Detection which automatically focuses and optimizes exposure for sharp, brilliant portrait pictures, and Digital Image Stabilization that uses the cameras high ISO sensitivity and faster shutter speeds to freeze the action and capture sharp, blur-free images even if you or your subject is moving. In addition, the camera has a built-in LED that illuminates your subjects when you can't use a flash - perfect for shooting macro photos or low-light portraits. The camera also features 14.5MB of built-in memory and an xD-Picture Card slot that allows you to expand the memory to over 2GB, providing enough storage capacity for hundreds of images.

Shockproof, Waterproof & Freezeproof
The Stylus 1050 SW is Shockproof with a durable metal body, floating circuit board and an innovative shock-absorbing construction to protect it from drops of up to 5 feet (MIL-STD-810F Shock Equivalent). It uses a revolutionary system of waterproof seals and gaskets keeps water out so you can take pictures as deep as 10 feet underwater (IEC6059 IPX8/JISC0920 Equivalent). And its Freezeproof such that it will function perfectly in temperatures as cold as -10°C/14°F (MIL-STD-810F Low Temp Equivalent) - making it a perfect camera for a trip to the great outdoors. Furthermore, the airtight design makes the camera impervious to dust, dirt and other particles that can degrade the camera over time.
10.1 Megapixel Resolution
The Stylus 1050 SW with its 10.1 megapixel image sensor delivers high-quality images that are consistently sharp and vivid even when printed in large formats - perfect for creating, poster-size enlargements or even crop, without losing detail.
3x Optical Zoom Lens
The Stylus 1050 SW uses an ultra-compact 3x zoom lens that is made from precision-crafted glass - plus it uses a special prism design so the lens does not extend out of the camera body when in use. There is also a 5x digit al zoom available for a combined zoom capability of 15x.
Digital Image Stabilization
Digital Image Stabilization freezes the action with high ISO sensitivity and fast shutter speeds that prevent blurry images often caused by a moving subject.
TruePic III Image Processor
The exclusive Olympus TruePic III image processor was developed for the demanding performance of Digital SLR (single lens reflex) cameras - it helps to produces crystal clear photos using all the pixel information for each image to deliver superior picture quality with less image noise, more accurate colors, and true-to-life flesh tones - it also promotes faster processing speeds.
Face Detection Technology
Face Detection Technology tracks faces within the frame and automatically focuses and optimizes exposure for sharp, brilliant portrait pictures. Even if your subjects are moving, the camera continuously tracks your subjects' faces without having to press the shutter button.
Smile Shot
The Smile Shot mode uses face detection to detect a smile on your subject's face and automatically fires off three consecutive shots to capture that perfect smile. This is an incredibly valuable feature when taking pictures of children.
Shadow Adjustment Feature
Bring out the details in the shadow and capture scenes exactly as you see them. While the human eye is capable of detecting the nuances between dark and light and all the details in between, image sensors traditionally have not been quite as sensitive. The Stylus cameras address this challenge head-on with its innovative Shadow Adjustment Technology, which compensates for extreme contrast where the shadow areas are underexposed and lack visible detail.
Perfect Shot Preview
The Perfect Shot Preview mode enables users to preview and select various photographic effects on a live, multi-window screen before snapping the shot, ensuring users are capturing the exact image they want. It is an ideal way for novice users to learn about the effects of different photography techniques, such as zoom, exposure compensation, white balance and metering.

TV-quality Video Recording
The Stylus 1050 SW includes a high quality movie mode that captures VGA resolution video at a rate of 30 fps with sound - even when underwater - so you can use your compact digital still camera to produce superb video clips, and leave the camcorder at home.
Preset Shooting Modes
The Stylus 1050 SW offers a broad range of shooting modes to make it easy to take great photos in a variety of scenarios and lighting situations. Simply select the desired mode for portraits, landscapes, night scenes, fast-action, macro and more. Bought this for my grandson who was going to Utah for mountain biking and wanted something that was compact and could handle a rough environment. The camera's specification seemed to fit the bill. He just returned and I reviewed his pictures. They were great and he had no difficulties capturing great shots. He went with 2 batteries and a 2gb micro sd card. Took about 200 pictures and never had to change the battery or card.
The only limitation is in taking panorama pictures. As with other Olympus cameras you must use an Olympus card to use the panorama features of the camera. I recommend, therefore using Olympus M xd cards versus a sd card (the prices are about the same) and the limitation disappears. I just purchased a 2gb XD card for him.
The camera is small enough to fit in a purse or pocket.

I bought the camera to use mostly for vacations and photos with friends. In some lighting especially with any sort of Zoom the quality is not very good. It almost makes the picure look grainy/smoky. But then there are times it takes fantastic pictures! So I would recommend it to friends but would warn about the sometimes tempermental zoom.

Comments about Olympus Stylus 1050 SW Digital Camera (Black):

great camera for outdoor nuts. I can go, shoot and keep going without any hassle. Just a quick one finger operation to open camera and snap. The only issue I've had so far is that the only view finder is the monitor. Sunlight and shadow cause reflection on the monitor that makes it hard to see and focus. A small viewfinder would complete the package and make this the perfect camera for outdoor sports enthusiasts.

Comments about Olympus Stylus 1050 SW Digital Camera (Black):

As a self-declared amateur photographer, I was impressed with the underwater photography but not so impressed with the quality of the photos (above water) in low light situations. I live by a lake so I'm often in the water - I bought the camera mostly because it could take underwater photos. I'm not disappointed with it.

All considering, I would buy it again.

I use this camera for everyday photos and my hobbies including waterskiing, whitewater kayaking. I love the waterproof, shockproof features. Great pre-set settings, lots of options and the best feature is the sport mode, which takes continuous shots, lots of pictures in just a few seconds. Not a high powered zoom, but this was to be expected for the camera type.

Comments about Olympus Stylus 1050 SW Digital Camera (Black):

We do Surveying for this municipality and needed a small camera for on the go, that was both waterproof and shock proof. In the first two hours we had this camera, it was dropped into a concrete drainage ditch. So not only did it survive the fall with no damage, except for some superficial scratches, but it took on on some water as well. Works just the same as it did when we took it out of the box.

Comments about Olympus Stylus 1050 SW Digital Camera (Black):

I bought this camera because, first I have one for work. I am a hydrologist and spend hours a day walking stream channels and taking pictures around streams, waterproof is a plus. I also spend lots of time on Montana creeks fishing. Many previously owned cameras have gotten dunked and never recover. Though this camera has not been tested by submerging, it has gotten soaked in my pack from heavy rain storms. So far so good. The large screen and ease of operations are great. The internal menu is easy to get into and follow.

I bought this camera because I wanted a durable point-and-shoot that would stand up to the abuse I'd heap on it as a climber, snorkeler and field researcher. So far I have be thoroughly impressed. Image and video quality are quite good, especially for the price. My only complaint is the rather disappointing battery life- it would be worth getting a spare, especially since Olympus insists on using a proprietary battery. That said, this will be my go everywhere, everywhen camera- the one that I don't have to worry about exposing to rain or rocks.
