Comments about Panasonic HDC-SD9-8GB SDHC Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder:
I grow tired of people who really don't have much in the way of expertise trying to come off as experts.First, if you were successful why the need to "downgrade" to a lowly consumer model?Re Panasonic vs CannonGiven the 3 ccd system of the Pano the image will ALWAYS be better than your selected Cannons, period. The 3 ccd system is the same [except for size] system used in pro level Panasonic cameras. This is a good solid camera, if you want to step up you really have to make that a big step, like to the AG-HMC170 which has a street price of $3,600 bucks. Just so you know that system also used a 3 ccd engine, but 1/3" not the 1/6" of the SD9, and it uses a flash based storage system.

Comments about Panasonic HDC-SD9-8GB SDHC Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder:
This camera is great if you want a pocket video camera for outdoor use. If you are going on vacation and don't want to haul around a large bulky camera this is a great choice. It was choosen as one of the top 100 electronic products of 2008 by Consumer Reports. However be warned that you can forget any indoor use with this camera unless you have great ambient light or want to set up studio lighting.

Comments about Panasonic HDC-SD9-8GB SDHC Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder:
I recently downgraded from a DVX to this camera due to certain circumstances and I was worried that this camera wouldnt be able to handle what i needed. However after i bought it, i was surprised. in good light it produces great quality with the convenience of being able to fit in your pocket. I would recommend it to anyone who doesnt have the budget of bigger cameras. Some negative qualities include poor quality in low/flat light, wierd menu joystick thing, different recording formats (AVCHD is still not too compatible unless you have a new computer or FCS), and having to plug the camera into the wall in order to capture footage. Other than that, this camera gets the job done pretty well.

Comments about Panasonic HDC-SD9-8GB SDHC Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder:
This camera is very small and very light and yet feels very well built.
I am a former pro videographer and I tend to ask a lot from my camcorders. This is my first HD model.
The good: In good light it shoots very nice HD video. It looks great on my 65 inch Sony HDTV. Lots of manual control for a little point and shoot camcorder. Great optical image stabilization plus nice auto focus. I get an 75 minutes of best quality video on an 8GB SD card.
The bad: Poor low light performance. Setting controls manually helps with this but at some point you pay the price for small sensors, small pixels and the small lens. Most indoor video looks hazy. The tiny joystick is hard to use but to get good video in anything less than ideal circumstances you have to use it. No viewfinder and the view on the LCD does not always look like what you are recording. AVCHD format is a bit problematic. I edit on a Mac but both iMovie and Final Cut convert the video to .mov files on import. This takes a while which negates the some of the advantage to recording to solid state media. I think it is actually a little slower than capturing from tape using firewire. Archiving all that HD video is a problem I had not really considered prior to purchase. I have nearly filled a 500GB external hard drive in a month.
This could be a great vacation camera due to it's small size and light weight. I bought some inexpensive extended life batteries which have worked well so far. This is not a bad camcorder if you don't expect too much. I have really enjoyed this camera. That being said I would buy a Canon HV30 if I had to purchase again. HDV is self-archiving and easier to work with. If I were going to stay with AVCHD I would still go for a Canon such as an HF10 for the better low light performance and higher resolution. This could be a great vacation camera due to it's small size and light weight. I bought some inexpensive extended life batteries which have worked well so far. This is not a bad camcorder if you don't expect too much.
