This SolarMax 40 Telescope from Coronado is a dedicated dual etalon H-Alpha solar viewing telescope with doublestacked 40 mm SolarMax filters, two T-Max 40 tuners, and a BF-10 blocking filter. This dual-filter system provides a very narrow bandpass of <0.5 Å. In comparison to the SolarMax 40 0.7 Å, this scope will produce enhanced contrast on subtle features within the active areas of the solar disk, along with a marginal reduction in detail in the disk-edge prominences.

The heart of the SolarMax 40's viewing system is the SolarMax 40 filter and its matching T-Max 40 Doppler Tuning Unit. This combination can be selectively adjusted by the viewer to de-tune the telescope's optical system. The wavelengths produced by high-velocity events such as active flares and coronal mass ejections (CME) can Doppler-shift and become invisible to a fixed H-Alpha system. The slight adjustment range made possible by the T-Max 40 allows these phenomena to become more visible.

All SolarMax filters must be used with a secondary interference filter. This package includes the BF-10 blocking filter - a 1.25" right-angle diagonal that produces a 9.0 mm image. The BF-10 is thermally stable, so the image will not drift off the H-Alpha line as it heats up during use. Its 10 mm aperture is matched to the telescope's focal length for full disk views of the Sun. This large aperture also enables the use of most Barlow lenses - this simplifies digital photography and enables the use of binoviewers.

SolarMax telescopes produce outstanding views of the Sun's active surface with 100% safety. None of the parts in this kit are stand-alone units - each component is equally crucial to the user's safety and the system's performance.

• Dedicated H-Alpha Telescope: This 400 mm f/10 solar viewing refractor offers enhanced portability at the sake of some resolution; it represents an excellent balance of value, performance, and transportability.

• Factory Matched Dual H-Alpha Filtration - 0.5 Å: A pair of 40 mm objective filter are factory-matched to produce a very narrow 0.5 Å bandwidth. This system offers enhanced viewing of surface details and activities. Because these filters are factory-matched, they offer a higher level of performance over doublestacking a standard 0.7 Å SolarMax 40 telescope.

• Dual T-Max 40 Doppler Tuning Units: Each T-Max 40 is used to de-tune one SolarMax filter towards the blue end of the H-Alpha line. This enhances detailed observation and imaging of solar disk shapes, surface details, prominences, granulation, and edge activities.

• BF-10 Blocking Filter: The BF-10 is a 1.25" right angle diagonal that must be used with a SolarMax filter. It produces a 9.0 mm image. It is thermally-stable to ensure there's no drifting off the H-Alpha line during use. Its 10 mm aperture matches the scope's focal length for full disk viewing.

• Sol Ranger Finderscope: The Sol Ranger attaches to the SolarMax telescope's clamshell mount. A pinhole on the front of the Sol Ranger allows a harmless beam of light to be projected onto an opaque glass viewer when the sun is in the main scope's FOV. The resulting image can be viewed easily from the rear of the telescope - this ensures a rapid and accurate alignment process.

The T-Max 40 from Coronado is used to de-tune a SolarMax filter towards the blue end of the H-Alpha line. This is accomplished by changing the angle at which the light passes though the etalon. The wavelengths produced by high-velocity events such as active flares and coronal mass ejections (CME) can Doppler-shift and become invisible to an H-Alpha tuned system. The T-Max unit allows the user to adjust the system slightly to make these phenomena more visible. This T-Max unit is designed to be used with Coronado's 40 mm SolarMax filter.
The T-Max is designed to be placed directly behind the SolarMax filter. It is comprised of two black plates, set screws, and a knurled knob. When the knob is adjusted, the two plates separate. One plate remains parallel to the telescope's objective cell while the other creates an angle between the etalon and the objective cell. The resulting angle is <0.7° - a greater angle would place the filter completely off-band. The T-Max unit is designed to deliver the optimal view within its range of adjustment.

The BF-10 Blocking Filter from Coronado is the secondary interference filter in a Coronado H-Alpha solar viewing system. Blocking filters are not stand-alone devices; they must be used in conjunction with a SolarMax filter. In a solar viewing system, the blocking filter is just as crucial to the viewer's safety and the system's performance as the front element. This 10 mm blocking filter, the BF-10, is compatible with telescopes that have a focal length that is equal to or less than 1000 mm.

Note! SolarMax filters are sold in kits that include a blocking filter. This blocking filter offered here is intended for viewers who have two different focal length telescopes that they intend to use with their SolarMax system.
