Lightroom features a powerful interface for managing large numbers of photographs. You'll be able to filter images into folders and subfolders; "virtual copies" can exist in multiple folders, without the need to create another copy of the file in question. The software gives you the ability to store photos on multiple hard drives, and even view low-resolution previews of offline media.
Robust rating, selection, keyword, and metadata tools are available to help you locate images quickly. Lightroom also allows you to create customizable "Smart Collections" that are automatically updated based on this data.
- Non-Destructive RAW Editing

The software uses a non-destructive approach to image editing. Original files are untouched by edits. Rather, Lightroom stores adjustments made to images in a central database, ensuring that the integrity of your original files remains intact. You can even write image changes to an XML "sidecar" file, which can be read by Adobe Camera RAW in Photoshop.
Lightroom features a number of preset develop settings that can be applied to images; you are also able to create your own custom settings for future use. These can be applied on image import en masse, or on an image-by-image basis.
Image editing controls include standard brightness, contrast, saturation, curve and sharpening adjustments. Lightroom also includes tools to remove chromatic aberration, crop and straighten images, remove dust spots, adjust fill light and black levels, remove red eye, and other common tasks. The local adjustment brush lets you apply changes to only a certain area of the image. Of course, Lightroom also features tight integration with Adobe Photoshop CS3, for those times when pixel editing is a necessity.

Lightroom allows you to export, print, or showcase images on the web. Adobe maintains a listing of free third-party export plugins are available to directly upload images to popular social networking web sites and gallery applications -- including Facebook, Flickr, and Gallery2 -- directly from within the software.
You'll also be able to create custom web galleries, both in Flash and HTML formats. These galleries can be hosted on your personal web space, and feature customizable templates. You can even upload these galleries to an FTP server with a single click!
Lightroom also lets you print images. You can arrange a photo for printing in multiple sizes, or as one of many on a single page. This helps you use paper and ink efficiently.

- Users of the original version of Lightroom will find plenty of reasons to upgrade. The local adjustment brush allows you to dodge, burn, and make other local adjustments. I bought the original Lightroom when it first came out. I was determined to love it, use it, and perform great organized accomplishments with it. Over time other activities took my valuable time and prevented me from accomplishing these goals. Lightroom #1 was a great photo labeling, storage device but with a second rate editing feature. Now Lightroom II comes along, and like the first, it includes all the first rate features of the first with labeling/metadata editing features, but it also improves upon the image editing features as well. I find several features easier to use: the crop feature, and the graduated feature are two that make this upgrade worthwhile alone. The transition between Photoshop Elements and Lightroom II are that much easier to make with this new version. If there is only one suggestion I could make to new purchasers of this software, it would be to buy a book. Even if you know Lightroom 1 like the back of your hand, this new features make the book a worthwhile investment to get the most from your money. Enjoy the program, spend your time shooting, not cataloging. Enjoy!

I don't like the repositioning of the toolbars without any appearent reason: for people who was used to use "automatically" some features this is quite boring.
Keywords are no more auto-completing, and this is really boring.

remember the days editing on Photoshop it was a never end job, but now i can do thousands, this program really rocks, now the new one has cool tools but those need more memory, if the adobe team can ad frames library and the posibility to render music for slideshow tool please!!! jajaja

I HATE the new way Lr interfaces with your computer's files. The first version was seemless and made sense. The new version can't seem to figure out that you've moved images from your camera to your hard-drive without creating two version of EACH IMAGE. Very frustrating compared to the first version of Light room (which I LOVED!). I"m not impressed with the second version and would gladly use the first version excepting that my RAW format is not recognized by the first version. In short, the first LR was nice and intuitive. The second is anything but!

I am not a "power" photoshop user, but I am a pretty prolific photographer (managing over 26,000 photos in Lightroom). I was happy with Lightroom 1.4 and did not feel the need for the upgrade features.
All I can say is "Try it, You'll like it!" Keeping your minor local adjustments in Lightroom rather than going out to Photoshop or Elements is a blessing in time and convenience AND works really well. Going to a double monitor setup is not necessary, but if you do, you'll never go back.
Lots of little things, but they add up to one fabulous product. If you haven't upgraded, take it from me, you should and if you have never used Lightroom at all? Don't wait another moment, pick up the phone, fire up the browser, get in your car. Whatever you have to do. If you have more than two digital images and you want to both find them and make them look better, you NEED to have Lightroom 2!

The added features in this product are really an improvement. The development tools include an easier to use cropping tool and leveling tool. The graduated filter effect is really helpful on shots where you didn't have one in the field. Organizing continues to be an easy task with the added feature of Smart Collection, that automatically collects the last 30 days, 5 star pictures and those without keywords (a great memory helper). Making presentations is easy. Navigating has been improved to make things more intuitive and multiple drives are clearly labeled. I'm very happy with the upgrade!

Simply put; Lightroom 2 delivers what it promises. I upgraded from LR1 and immediately got the benefit of the new gradient tool and adjustment brushes. LR2 has become an indispensable part of my work flow; import, catalog, adjust, customize, export to purpose, including direct to web. I debated about the upgrade from LR1 to LR2, but would say this was money very well spent.

I have heard all the good things about how this saves a lot of time in Photoshop. It confuses me that it isn't laid out more like Photoshop, since there is a considerable learning curve to get to the point where you are actually saving time. It seems they would use the same tools so one could get up to speed faster. How do you make a selection, etc.? They don't even include a manual. It's main strength is RAW editing and reviewing, especially its non-destructive editing which also applies to JGEG.

This is the software you need for Photograpy. Additional plug-ins/software can be added should you chose, however, Lightroom gives you the necessary functionality to do most anything you desire. It has a much eaiser learning curve than working with CS3 etc. Also, should you require Tech Support, they are available in helping resolve any problems you may have.
