The Pearstone Cold Shoe Adapter for Sony Camcorders attaches external microphones and lights to any Sony camcorder. The shoe's locking wheel keeps the adapter locked to the camera, ensuring that your accessories stay firmly in place. In addition, the screw can be tightened on the left or right side to hold accessories to the camera. For use by both left and right handed individuals, the bottom part of the shoe can be removed and rotated. This cold shoe adapter will not provide power to the accessories via the camera, so an external power source needs to be used.

I read previous reviews that said this item doesn't attach securely to either the camera or the mic/light... that may have been the case with the previous incarnation... but the product has now been redesigned... and this new version sold through B&H (the pearstone II) attaches securely (just a tiny bit of give on both ends, not a problem, no danger of losing equipment) to my HDR-SR11 sony camcorder.
I am pleased with this item, it works as advertised... and it is an absolute requirement if you plan on using non-sony equipment with your sony ais port (remember the mic/light will not be powered through the ais port in this case, only mounted securely).
It is machined well, only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is it's slightly pricey for what it is.

I needed this to connect a Rode video mic to an SR-11 which is used for backup video to a primary camera. Overall I am not impressed. The engineering is pretty good but when installed it sits way too high on the camera body so that any torque applied (like a knock to the mic) flexes the attachment. Where it screws onto the camera is not very solid (still some play in the fit) and the shoe fitting to the mic has significant play. If you are using this for anything other than tripod use I would not recommend this adapter as any movement flexes the three failure points and you can actually hear these small creaks on a sensitive mic. I wish rode would just offer a sony AIS adapter!

Expensive accessory but no better choice for my external microphone. I bought the video bracket that has two cold shoe but the darn shoe fell off and couldn't get it glue back.
not 100% sure if the bottom part is plastic or metal so I'm being very careful mounting it.

Comments about Pearstone Cold Shoe Adapter for Sony Camcorders:
Well as usual with Sony their proprietary c r a p has struck again. This is a great product, but the problem is, why did I have to purchase it? I had to because Sony has once again changed the standard. Now EVERYTHING that I own, every hot and cold shoe item no longer fits the new Sony standard so I am FORCED to buy new items.
Again, this is a great product and it is a MUST HAVE if you are purchasing any Sony Handycam Camcorder made in 2010 or later.

Bought the Rode VidMic to use with my HDR-xr500v. Didn't know that Sony has it's own unique hotshoe, had to get an adapter.
Fits perfectly.
Nice screw-down spacers, tightens up quickly and snugly.

Compact and lightweight. Secure fit for microphone, better than other types of adapters because of secure fit and compactness.

Comments about Pearstone Cold Shoe Adapter for Sony Camcorders:
I have had a series of Sony camcorders and have always been disappointed about the propietary shoe since I have Rode Videomic. In the past I tried a different adapter but it didn't fit well and required using "shims". The Pearstone cold shoe adapter is a much better product that fits tightly and holds my videomic securely. I don't have a problem with it sitting a little high, although it does take a little getting use to the balance with the adapter and the videomic mounted when using the camcorder handheld.

I'm so glad that this product is available! It makes it possible to use all sorts of standard cold shoe mics/lights with your Sony Handycam. I use mine with a Sony CX550V. It has a tiny bit of play while it sits in the Sony hot shoe...but not really enought to matter in most cases. It's also smaller than I thought it would be which is nice.

Comments about Pearstone Cold Shoe Adapter for Sony Camcorders:
I needed an adapter that allowed me to attach my shotgun mic, light and wireless mic receiver to my camera. Sony have a proprietary "little" hot shoe that was too small for my accessories.
This accessory was great. Simple to attach, fitted all my other accessories to the camera, and is small enough to fit in a pocket in my camera bag.
Exactly what I was looking for.

Comments about Pearstone Cold Shoe Adapter for Sony Camcorders:
First of all this adapter shoe is very high quality and durable. All the mechanisms to adjust the width of the shoe and tighten the foot at the bottom are cleanly designed and don't budge. The product is slightly tall in height which rests your mic even higher up on your camera. I bought a shockmount to fit into this from B&H and it fits perfectly. The only disappoint you will have when you have everything set up, is that height at which the mic is placed naturally causes the structural frame to gain leverage, which inevitably creates a looseness in the shockmount's position. What is to blame is definitely not the adapter or mount, because they are firmly secure. What is to blame is the camera's onboard shoe slot. Since it is not as high quality, the structure resting on top of it holding your mic might or might not wobble depending on your quality of camera.
Overall
Positives- High quality, does what it supposed to do.
Negatives- A little tall(only preference though), and quality is far ahead of most consumer camera's, so don't expect perfection.

Comments about Pearstone Cold Shoe Adapter for Sony Camcorders:
I have a sony Hdr sr11 and wanted to attach a senheisser microphone to it. Unfortunately sony has a properitary shoe and won't fit other manufacturer's microphone. Pearstone fitted well for my needs. I was able to fix the shoe properly and tighten it without any play on my hdr sr 11 and the microphone too aligned well with the shoe. Altogether a win win with a topnotch microphone ona top of the line camcorder.
THe only advice i would give is this setup will work great for tripods and not for freehand shooting. Also will recommend not to take out the shoe and put it back very frequently. I have left it in the sonyhandy cam permanently and will remove the microphone on demand.

Comments about Pearstone Cold Shoe Adapter for Sony Camcorders:
The adapter fits snuggly in the hot shoe on my Sony HDR-SR12. The locking wheel screws down further to really give it a good hold. I have a Rode Stereo VideoMic mounted to the adapter. The cold shoe on the adapter clamps down nicely with the side thumb screw. Overall there's a little (tiny) bit of wobble, but considering how much weight is mounted onto such a small surface area this is to be expected. One thing for sure is my mic is definitely not going anywhere.

Works fine but it's really tall and bulky for such a small camera application. Doesn't seem to tighten down all the way - still a little play when mounted.

This adapter positively locks onto both your normal hotshoe device AND to the Sony AIS mount.
I use it to attach a Rode Stereo Video Mic to a Sony HDR-HC9. It works perfectly. I now do not worry about the mic coming off the camera unexpectedly.
