The MR816 CSX from Steinberg is a FireWire digital audio interface that is the result of the combined experience of Yamaha's hardware expertise along with Steinberg's software knowledge. The interface features 16 inputs (8 analog, 8 digital) and 16 outputs along with built-in DSP.
However, the pedestrian nature of the above details is exceptionally enhanced by the direct integration of the hardware with the included Steinberg Cubase AI4 software. It is no longer necessary to have a control panel or other mixer routing software sitting between the interface and the software, as is the case with most other hardware interfaces.
DSP inside the MR816 CSX allows up to 8 instances of the "Sweet Spot Morphing Channel Strip" plug-in to be used in real time or as a plug-in within the Cubase software. Additionally, a single instance of Yamaha's REV-X reverb is available, the same reverb that is found on the company's high-end digital mixing consoles.
The combination of integrated hardware with DSP and the software provides a latency-free recording and monitoring environment that fully exploits the flexibility and power of Steinberg's music production software. Of course the interface can be used with other manufacturer's software, but in that case the supplied MR Editor needs to be utilized. This same software allows the interface to function standalone.

- An onboard DSP chip runs up to 8 instances of the "Sweet Spot Morphing Channel Strip" plug-in that consists of a side-chain enabled compressor and a 3-band parametric equalizer
- The DSP also includes the same REV-X reverb featured on many top Yamaha hardware mixing consoles
- The full DSP capability is also available as VST3 plug-ins in Cubase when mixing, with the 8 instances of the Channel Strip plug-in running as inserts in Cubase, alongside a single instance of REV-X
- The FX can be included in the signal recorded to the input track or the signal can be recorded dry with no FX or bypassed completely
- Independent monitor mixes can utilize the DSP capability to enhance a performer's comfort
- 2 independent headphone outputs with individual front panel level controls
- 2 inserts for integration of additional external hardware FX processors
- Optical input and output port for ADAT digital audio streams or S/PDIF optical along with coaxial S/PDIF
- Wordclock input and output via BNC connectors
- Up to 3 units can be used via a single FireWire port to achieve up to 48 input and output channels, with all connected I/Os simultaneously recognized by Cubase with no additional setup required
