I'm a pro photographer and have owned a zillion Nikon pro DSLRs (currently using the D300 + MBD10). My wife shoots with a D70. But when we're out and about with our 2 year old, we just wanted a point a shoot so that we didn't have to deal with the big stuff.
The P6000 has controls that are much more similar to Nikon's DSLR line than to a point-and-shoot. Real knob for selecting exposure mode, and a command wheel! So I can be creative and shoot in Aperture Priority. Exposure compensation is simple, and image navigation/deleting/etc. is very straightforward.
Image quality is very good so far -- best I've seen in a Nikon or Canon point-and-shoot. Battery life is great (uses a real rechargeable battery, though regrettably it can't share the charger with our DSLRs). Focus lock-on is still slow enough to miss child action as with other similar cameras, but for the most part it does what we need it to with the comfort of a pro quality camera. Ergonomics are great and definitely feel like a pro camera, with rubberized grip, etc. If you're shopping online, it's smaller than you might think from just seeing the photos -- I can put it in my coat/jacket pocket.
Overall the new leader of the pack in point-and-shoot cameras.

I own an SLR and was excited about the P6000 as an alternative to my point and shoot. The P6000 offered many of the controls of an SLR but in a compact package. I could not be more disappointed with this camera because the battery life is horrible. Every time I go to use the camera it’s DEAD! I thought I had a bad batteries so I replaced it then I thought it was the charger so I replaced that too. Now Nikon is telling me that “some times it just goes dead”. There is no batterie indicator on the camera so it’s a shot in the dark if it will work on your next shoot. Also the images taken at 200 ASA and higher or some of the nosiest I’ve ever had to work with. If you have a pocket full of Nikon batteries and are shooting at 50ASA then you might love this camera but I hate it.

Comments about Nikon Coolpix P6000 Digital Camera (Black):
Tried the camera for a few weeks to evaluate, or opt for the canon g10/g11 or join the DSLR bandwagon as the point-and-shoot limitations in taking photos indoors under trying light conditions or of fast moving kids was not proving to be successful.
Sadly i guess i tried the wrong camera, as the competitor from canon the G11 is far more superior, but i could not find it to try it out. This camera produces great shots when you take the time and use the flash or use it with good light. The photos outside were sharp and the colors great, and photos indoors with flash were just superb.
However the major problem was that the focus was slow, and you could never take a photo of a kid on the move unless you predict it ahead. Photos without the flash were very noisy, not surprising when it packs so many mega pixels into a small sensor.
The usability of the camera is also not great, and a few more dials like the canon g-series are required, since making the most of it requires an immense amount of menu based navigation.
The manual mode is good as useless! as the implementation is not very use-able. The viewfinder being there is great, but it does not have a diopter correction which means for people like me who uses specs its not of great value :(

I'm normally using my Nikon D3, but this camera are great to bring with me, in the daily run, where the D3 is to big and to heavy.
This camera takes great jpgs and also RAWs. Slow in the RAW, but worth waiting for. Don't buy this camera, if you think you should use it for ultra fast photos, then you should by a real prof like the D3 or similar.

Comments about Nikon Coolpix P6000 Digital Camera (Black):
I loved the camera at first because of its ability for more manual control, but also hated it because it had absolutely NO battery longevity . . . 30-40 shots in lesss than two hours without GPS, flash, etc. I returned it, experienced the same problems with the second unit, and then saw the firmware upgrade from [@]. Now the battery life has increased to almost 300 shots and the lil' 6000 has become my favorite pocketable camera. Also check with Nikon USA if you can't find the firmware 1.1. Happy shooting!

Comments about Nikon Coolpix P6000 Digital Camera (Black):
I have and use this cam on a regular basis.
The GPS performs flawlessly, though if you leave it on (it stays on when camera is off), it will drain the battery eventually. It keeps the GPS 'dormant', so that you get a quick fix when you do switch the camera on. As long as you are aware of this, you will learn to manage the GPS vs. battery use just fine. I can shoot more than 500 shots, over a week on one charge, including using the GPS occasionally. It will take a longer time to get a fix from GPS off mode, especially if you have changed locations from where you have last had a GPS fix, this is not a problem when GPS is dormant, then it gets a fix in no time.
This Camera shoots great landscapes, or portraits, works just as well indoors at a party in poor light and just for fun shots, but its serious side is where it excels!
Switch to aperture priority or manual for macro, get as much or as little depth of field as you want. AE lock & Focus Lock at your fingertips. Manual focus? not a problem, which is great for macro, set it, and then move the camera back and forth for pin sharp focus on the subject.
I have adapted an old Nikon SL1 LED ring light for macro photography, and have great results, even in video mode. The ring light does crop the four corners of the shot as it was designed for another camera, so photoshop cropping needed for that.
Using a slide duplicator that was also originally for the Coolpix 5000 (small adapter ring mod needed), I am getting good results with digitizing my slide collection. Much quicker than a slide scanner.
I am very pleased with this little camera, its smaller than it looks online, its sturdy build is a plus for taking it rock climbing, mountain biking, skiing and paragliding which is part of my daily life, cameras don't usually survive long with me, but this one is doing great!
For the reviewers having trouble with GPS and or battery life, read the manual... Get to know how to use it before you review it?

This camera was purchased for our high school art organization to document their activities as well as photograph their work for portfolio development. The camera offers a lot of flexibility for a fraction of the cost of an SLR. The macro setting works really well for taking photos of small, student made jewelry pieces with great detail. The settings are easy for all of the students to use to take reference photos and photos of their activities. We have just started using the camera and have not found any flaws with the functions, quality, or design.

I chose this camera for underwater photography to replace my Canon G7. I am very happy with the choice. The camera has good optional housings that allow the use of external lenses, both Macro and Wide (Canon G series only takes macro). The manual controls and picture quality match the Canon, they are not great in low light but no compact is today.
The P6000 also beats the Canon G series in size, it fits better in a pocket and is lighter. I'm using it for travel and I'm very happy with it.
I don't understand the complaints about the GPS, it works fine. The only little problem is that you need to turn it off if you will not use the camera for a few days or it will drain the battery.

All in all the Nikon Coolpix P6000 an ok little point-and-shoot.
But I didn't buy it to be an ok little point-and-shoot. I bought it specifically for location scouting and geotagging.
I have owned the P6000 for several months now, and have NEVER managed to get a signal with the GPS.
Now, I figured it wouldn't exactly be a Garmin. And a little spotty coverage would have been tolerable, but to NEVER get a signal is unacceptable.
And an additional frustration: the hotshoe ONLY works with Nikon flashes. It will NOT fire with non-dedicated flashes or wireless flash triggers.
I have tried it with a Pocket Wizard radio slave, Cactus V2s wireless flash trigger, Canon 430EX speedlite, Vivitar 285HV flash, Nikon SB-19, and Nikon SB-600. The only flashes to work were the Nikon SB-19 and SB-600.

I really love this litte camera! It takes sharp photos and I really love the RAW feature and Manual Controls, which I use most of the time.
I am currently using a 16GB turbo (class 6)SDHC card which works great with the camera.
Photo Quality is excellent for a P & S. For Best result use A, P, S, M over any auto settings.
Love using the SB 400 external Flash for bounce lighting.
Make sure you have the latest firmware.
and make sure you use a fast SDHC CARD.

I purchased the camera for my wife, who at the time wanted the camera for a new grandchild. I started to show my wife the features of the camera and I was so thrilled with them that to this day my wife has not been able to tear the camera away from me. I have a Nikon D200 but much prefer the Coolpix because of its size, quality and features.
So in the near future I will be purchasing another Coolpix for my wife.

Great camera. The Geotagging in iPhoto is amazing. I'll never forget where I took a picture again. I mean to the nearest couple of feet! This is especially great for work. I am an environmental consultant. Where on a large site I took a photo is important. I also need to log the latitude and longitude and this beats a handheld GPS. It's automatic.

I love Nikons and I bought this over the Canon G10 - what a mistake. Although this camera is easy to operate and gives you great control, the picture quality is terrible. Perhaps I just got a "bad" camera? None-the-less I am sending it back. What a disappointment!

I was looking for a small camera with RAW capability. We all know that’s the best new technology so no need to explain that the pictures could be easily retouched almost as if you were in a real lab. There is a before and after RAW in photography.
Also this is the only PS camera with GPS.
Plan a trip, take you Nikon P600 with you, come back home, download the pictures on your MAC; i-photo will create a map with the exact location where they were taken regardless if you were in NYC or the jungle. One more click and you could share them with the map on facebook.
My friends couldn’t believe it!!!!!!!!!!!

Comments about Nikon Coolpix P6000 Digital Camera (Black):
I purchased the P6000 as a back-up to my professional gear as well as for previewing architectural photography shoots. It is one of only a few point-and-shoot cameras that has RAW capability with a large (13.5) megapixel receptor.
I like several things about the camera: 1. It has a hot shoe and a good range of flash settings; 2. The menu structure and short cut dials are very simple and user friendly. 3. I appreciate the 2 user settings; and 4. The VR and noise reduction controls. There are other nice features too numerous to mention here.
The manual mentions that the Noise Reduction feature must be set to automatic in order for the bracketing feature to work but NOT under the bracketing feature description. It took me a while to figure that out. It would be nice to have a cable release as the remote trigger will not work with the bracketing feature either. More and more of my work uses HDR in processing and it would be nice to have this steady with a cable release.
Overall am happy with the camera and recommend it to others.
