Canon is making 2 lights for the submini shoe - the vl-5 (this one) which is 5 watts and another newer model which includes a strobe and video light in one housing (vl2+2? - NOT SURE).
The big differences are that the VL-5 is a true 5 watt lamp and has good color rendition when used indoors. Their other model has a 3 watt lamp instead and includes a small strobe above it which is about the same size as the built in popup strobe that works while the vl-5 is attached.
I opted for the vl-5 since the other model did not offer much beyond the builtin strobe, but was only 3 watts in video light mode as opposed to 5.
Note using this light will cut your battery record times in half, so order it with the bp-827.

VL-5 Video Light - 3W not 5 W
The video light that I received came in packaging labeled VL-5 by Canon but it does not look like the picture and it clearly states on the Canon packaging this:

The video light that I received came in packaging labeled VL-5 by Canon but it does not look like the picture and it clearly states on the Canon packaging this:
Main Specifications
- Bulb: 5.7 V/3 W- Weight: Approx. 43g - Power Consumption: 3.3 W
So, what I received is labeled as a Canon VL-5, doesn't look like the picture on any websites I visit, including B & H and clearly states it is 3 W instead of 5 W. I'm not happy with the discrepancies.
Not sure what I think of how it performs either. I need to put on my TV screen to check it out further. This was a gift I'd requested to go with my M30 video camera.

This 5 watt light takes all the guess work out of filming. The auto mode on the light kicks on when there is not enough natural light to achieve brilliant picture quality. No more grainy under illuminated home videos. Easy to attach and doesn't drain the camera battery as quickly as past lights I've used.

Operates with camera battery, which will effect the video recording time. Should have designed with a separate battery like AAA !!!!!!! But gives good results in dark video recording.

Comments about Canon VL-5 On-Camera 5 Watt Video Light:
Surprisingly powerful. Well made, as is the case with all Canon products. Does get quite hot and you will need to carry a backup battery with you as this drains power quickly. A bit pricey, but probably worth it.

I use it w/ vixia HF10, in low light conditions it has resoved the grainy appearance for subjects in close proximity. Lightweight, easy to use!

Comments about Canon VL-5 On-Camera 5 Watt Video Light:
compact & light weight but needs more power.
Ok for close video shots as and added light source
for 5 feet or less.
One big problem when the light is attached to the
advanced shoe its difficult to shoot a still
shot, your finger has to get around the flash. It takes some getting used to.

Works well. No shadows appear behind the lit subjects. Would be a bit better if it light just a bit wider. When at full wide angle edges are a bit under lit.

Comments about Canon VL-5 On-Camera 5 Watt Video Light:
Although this functions as advertised, for general video work around the house or indoors, the range is very limited, and it is not good for much other than for minimal fill within about 8 feet in range on a Canon HF-S10. If you want a light to use indoors over about 8 feet in range with normal lighting in a typical home, get something with more capability.

Comments about Canon VL-5 On-Camera 5 Watt Video Light:
An essential if you are shooting indoor parties with low light. The power output is enough to light up about 3-4 meters in front of the camera without blinding people.
I used it for wedding and event videography.
Only con is that because I use a wide angle converter (WD-H37II WIDE-CONVERTER LENS), light fall-off is visible but bearable.
Get a BP-827 BATTERY PACK (2670mAH) if you intend to shoot with this light. Lasts for about 2h with the larger capacity battery pack. With the original batt for Canon HF10, it will lasts about 40-30 min only.

I use this product on a Canon Vixia HG20 camcorder. It adds bright light to interior video shooting where light is minimal. The VL-5 is light, easy to attach and has a bright output.
