Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes.
Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed. Graduated Neutral Density filters are part clear, part neutral density. They allow the transition to be blended into the scene, often imperceptibly.

I wasn't expecting the greatest ND filter because of the low cost of this item, but I was pleasantly surprised with this filter. It works great with photos taken at the beach, on the waterfront, landscape, and in bright sunshine overall. I am glad I didn't pay over $100 for another brand!

Comments about Tiffen 72mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 0.6 Glass Filter:
Using this on a 180mm linhoff 617 S III camera lens. The filter is used to darken gray skies, which contrast filters cannot do. This Tiffen filter is GLASS, made in the U.S.A. and comes with a little filter how-to booklet free, like a prize in a Cracker box. The competition, some excellent manufacturers included, made this filter only in plastic. So, I went for US glass.

Comments about Tiffen 72mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 0.6 Glass Filter:
I used the filter for the first time last week and was very satisfied with the performance. A great filter at a great price. I used this on a Nikon 18mm-200mm lens and I got a fair amount of vignetting in the corners at 18mm.

Lets me hold the shutter open longer to get the dark areas of my subject into the image, especially when the sun is rising or setting and not being over exposed.

Comments about Tiffen 72mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 0.6 Glass Filter:
This has got to be the most amazing filter I have ever used. It does wonders for landscape photography. The best use is during days with partly cloudy skys. It makes the blues blue and the clouds just pop! I used it during a recent hike and when I got home to play with my shots in Lightroom 3, the results were like composing and HDR photo. I found the best settings in the evaluate exposure setting is a -1 exposure setting. Then when you get it in LR3, max out recovery, pump up the fill light, smooth out with the blacks and tweek clarity and vibrance to taste. You'll be amazed at the results! This has got to be in your camera bag or if not, on your wish list.

Comments about Tiffen 72mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 0.6 Glass Filter:
This is the first ND filter (Tiffen 72mm Color-Grad Neutral Density) I've had. I used it for twighlight shots at a marina to even tones between the sky and water. It worked for me. The workshop instructor (a commercial photographer) asked the other participants to see the effect in my camera LCD screen. For the people that didn't have a ND filter, he advised them to get one. And I liked the results of the filter when viewing the images on my computer screen.

This item is absolutely necessary for a landscape photographer. I had one previously which I accidentally dropped in an icy river, and if it hadn't meant certain hypothermia and possible death, I would have gone in after it.

Comments about Tiffen 72mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 0.6 Glass Filter:
This is a well built filter, that does its job -obviously landscaping - quite well. Being the first one I have bought I have nothing to compare it to so I will just say that it is working as advertised for me and it balances the sky and the ground effectively.
Would buy again, it's practical to have one in many situations.
