APC Back-UPS CS 500
The Back-UPS CS 500 from APC provides professional power protection and battery backup for computer systems. Safe system shutdown and advanced power management capabilities keep systems and data safe via serial or USB connection, and built-in phone/fax/modem (DSL-compatible) connections protect systems from surges traveling on data lines.
The UPS features six outlets, three of which provide battery backup. Its battery provides 13.9 minutes of run time at half-load capacity. APC offers guaranteed protection from surges and spikes with a lifetime, $100,000 Equipment Protection Policy.
- Battery Backup
- The user-replaceable battery provides 13.9 minutes of backup at half-load and 2.4 minutes of backup at full-load. This gives you enough time to safely shut down your computer in the event of a power outage.
- Data Line Protection
- The surge protector features an RJ-11 surge protection connection that allows you to protect modem connections from power surges. This helps to preserve the life of your modem and further protect your computer from surges.
- Spaced Outlets
- The UPS features two spaced outlets that are designed to accommodate devices with large "power brick" AC adapters. This lets you power and protect these devices without sacrificing another plug due to their large size.
- Audible Alarms
- The surge protector features an audible alarm that lets you know when there is a problem with your power. This helps to make you aware of a power outage or surge.
- USB and Serial Communication
- This UPS features USB and serial ports for computer communication. This communication allows your computer to automatically shut down safely in the event of a power outage.

I own two of this model of UPS. I use one under software control to protect my computer from summer time fluctuations and to ensure an orderly shutdown during power outages. The other one is used without the software to operate my garage door opener, when there is a complete power outage.
I have found the hardware reliable and even this smaller model provides sufficient capacity for these personal use tasks.

This is one great little UPS. Simple to use, plug your stuff in, plug it in, turn it on.
If you want notification, install the Windows software and you'll be told whenever you're on battery power.
Just make sure you buy the 110VAC and not the 230VAC one by accident!
