The Nikon D90 SLR Digital Camera, with its 12.3-megapixel DX-format CMOS, 3" High resolution LCD display, Scene Recognition System, Picture Control, Active D-Lighting, and one-button Live View, provides photo enthusiasts with the image quality and performance they need to pursue their own vision while still being intuitive enough for use as an everyday camera. It features Nikon's EXPEED image processing engine to deliver outstanding images featuring fine details, smooth tones, rich colors and low noise across a wide ISO sensitivity range, and significantly accelerate camera performance on all levels. With a start up time of just 0.15 seconds and a shutter release lag time of approx. 65 milliseconds, the D90 delivers instant response, and provides continuous shooting at a rapid 4.5 frames per second. In addition, the D90 introduces the D-Movie mode, allowing for the first time, an interchangeable lens SLR camera that is capable of recording 720p HD movie clips.
The Nikon D90 lets users take advantage of the superior optical quality and broad selection of available NIKKOR lenses, and the refined 11-area AF System (based on Nikon's advanced Multi-CAM 1000 AF Sensor Module) ensures consistently fast and precise focus lock in various shooting conditions while Nikon's exclusive 3D Color Matrix Metering II ensures accurate automatic exposure control, even in the most challenging lighting conditions.
The D90 provides remarkable user operability, featuring Nikon's exclusive Scene Recognition System that advances precision in auto focus, auto exposure, and auto white balance in diverse shooting situations - so you'll get stunning images with point-and-shoot simplicity. The Live View mode allows for users to frame their images on the large 3" high resolution color LCD - providing for easy image framing, even when shooting at odd angles. There are also three contrast-detect AF modes to allow photographers to focus on any point in the frame, and enabling a greater variety of composition. In addition, the D90 has a face priority AF mode available in the Live View mode for even sharper pictures of people.
This package includes Nikon's AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens, a high performance & efficient optic that's a perfect partner for the D90. Useful in many scenarios, the lens' built-in Vibration Reduction II system provides equivalent shutter speeds (for reducing camera motion, not subject motion) 3 steps faster than standard lenses. This allows for much sharper handheld exposures in low light. It also has one ED glass element and one aspherical lens element, optimized for use with DX-format SLRs. The VR system & ED glass allow you to make highly-resolved, crisp images with minimal chromatic aberration. Lastly, the lens' ultra-compact Silent Wave Motor allows for blazingly quick, silent autofocus. With the D90 and the 18-105mm VR lens, you can capture a high percentage of "keeper" candids of things like children scurrying about at a birthday party, a tall task for any SLR camera.

The Nikon D90 is a winner!
I've shot both Nikon and Canon digital slrs for years and the D90 is wonderful. I shoot a lot of travel and nature images as well as portraits and experimental night shots. I consider myself an advanced amatuer and maybe pro if I could afford the higer end cameras. The color is the most acurate to date and can compete with the professional and more expensive cousins.
I just finished shooting in Monumet Valley, Arizona and New Mexico and can't believe how perfect the color and color contrasts are. When you have brilliant reds against brilliant blue in most cameras without filters, usually the reds turn yellowish, but not the D90's images. It is as if you put a circular filter on the lens. It's fast, handles bright and low light superbly. Hardly any noise in low light and when there is it emulatees film grain. It's kinda like using both a Kodak and Fuji film bias, but in one camera. Also the self cleaning sensor is a great improvement. I was shooting in very windly and some times sand storm conditions and nothing on the sensor, wow!
The 18-105mm lens is very nice too. I usually use the 18-200 Nikon vr, but didn't even take it out. It's a great travel lens. I love the new HD video feature too, it really comes in handy. Before I used my Nikon Coolpix 8800 for video and time lapse exclusively. Being able to use hight quality lenses make the video so real looking that you think its shot with a HD camcorder. The live view is a nice feature and also comes in handy, especially in low light long exposures. The live view focusing takes a bit of getting used to, but once you do it is nice to use. The battery life is better than before, but would recommend purchasing a second battery.
The only things I can say I'm not crazy about is the D90 doesn't shoot time lapse and it uses SD cards and not compact flash or at least a choice of cards. The only other thing would be the doors for the battery and the card don't seem to be very strong, and no springs. I think after a lot of use there may be issues.
I am very happy with the camera and would highly recommed it to a novice, a advanced amatuer and pro's for a second camera. You won't be disappointed!

I may have gotten a "dud" one, because I have only used it for less than a month and it is in the shop. Nikon is a week behind in getting to repairs and now that it is in repair, the part is on backorder at Nikon USA waiting on a part from Japan. Not sure about the quality of the camera at this point. It was slow to focus and seemed to have some fuzzy pixels at edges. It is a lot of money to spend for the time it worked. The problem was the lens contact communicating with camera body.It would not show anything in display, and after reading Nikon D90 blogs, found out is a common problem and that if I extended lens (18-105)back and forth a couple of times it would reset..which worked, but even after a while that quit working.

Comments about D90 SLR Digital Camera Kit with Nikon 18-105mm VR Lens:
I use several Nikons at work; D70, 80 and 90s. Used daily for portrait, public affairs and medical photography for years and they all deliver outstanding results. Matched with Nikon speed lights and light rings, they are the most versatile DSLRs you can buy. I recommend them to any serious photographer.

Comments about D90 SLR Digital Camera Kit with Nikon 18-105mm VR Lens:
I wanted a DSLR that would be user friendly and yet powerful enough for me to pursue something more than family photographs. The D90 is all that!
It's easy enough to just point and shoot with the Automatic features and yet I have all these options to control the shutter speed, aperture, the ISO sensitivity, etc. And with the advantage of digital photography (versus the actual film), I can shoot and shoot to my heart's content and not be burdened by film development.
The camera is easy to use as a lot of the settings are thumbs away. I had the choice between the D90 and the Canon 60D which is considered a "Professional" camera. The feel of the D90 as well as the construction of the camera has won me over. The 60D is a great camera filled with features. But I'm just a hobbyist. The D90 is more than enough camera for me. The pictures I have taken so far are outstanding and I have yet to scratch the surface of the features of the camera.
The only downside for this camera is that the HD movie is only 720P compared to the newer cameras that has 1080P. This camera was the pioneer of having movies for DSLRs so this part of its technology is a little behind compared to the newer cameras.
If you're a newbie like me, you'll be extremely satisfied to own this camera. The shutter speed, picture quality, screen resolution and the multiple of lens options available, are not too bad for the price of a high end entry level DSLR camera.

You are never wrong once you've decided to buy this camera! It's been a dream camera for me 2 years ago, and still it's great! If you aren't bothered about the budget get a D7000 otherwise D90 would be a perfect machine for you!

The morning I left for SXSW 2011, I came through the superstore to outfit myself for my first time photographing concerts. The D90 has had all the controls and features necessary for everything from casual every day use to demanding indoor low-light situations like small club shows.
In terms of professional use, this is definitely a "learning curve" body - as in, it has everything on it you need to learn the ropes, and advance quickly, but it will also show you where the upper echelon of Nikon's lineup outshine this.

Highly pleased with the responsiveness of this camera as well as the relatively intuitive command processes. I learned on a Nikon FM manual camera and wanted to duplicate the ability to select my f stops and shutter speeds to create close ups and nature photography. I am finding that the Program mode is making my transition to digital a lot easier than I thought. Brilliant photos, captured without a lot of fuss makes my amateur experience a joy.

Hx: D90 is a retirement gift to myself. My first digital camera; worked with film and computers. Pro: body grip, light weight, eye piece and diopter adjustment; good graphics in manual.
Cons: would like edge to edge image viewing screen and swivel; manual with all info i.e. on "metering" in one section.
After wondering round the neighborhood shooting and referring to manual for a few days, I'm getting excellent photos! Good contrast detail: While shooting a bridge series on a hot day, detail held in shaded figures and foliage, when more than half the composition was sunny concrete! I'm still in the learning curve, the biggest hurtle is understanding the automation (i.e. spot metering) so I can "use it", or "get around it" to get the effect I want. I've found a friendly sidekick, I'm getting to know. Photos are awesome!
