The Canon EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera features an APS-C sized 15.1-megapixel CMOS sensor for superb quality images and the latest DIGIC 4 Image Processor to provide superior color reproduction, and improved ISO capabilities for uncompromised shooting even in the dimmest situations. It also features a 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor, supercharged Live View Function with Face Detection Live mode, plus a number of automatic Image Correction settings and HDMI output. This Kit also includes Canon's EF 28-135mm IS USM AF Lens, a compact, lightweight zoom lens with superior optical performance with Canon's exclusive Image Stabilizer (IS) system that reduces the possibility of blurred photographs caused by camera shake, and a USM drive mechanism for optimum AF performance.
The 15.1-megapixel image sensor delivers ultra-detailed images and the redesigned photo diodes and microlenses of the sensor extend its light gathering capabilities to ensure improved high ISO performance and low noise. Furthermore, the camera's ISO sensitivity is an astounding 3200 with expanded sensitivity to an ultra-sensitive 12800. The Integrated Cleaning System includes a Self Cleaning Sensor Unit with a fluorine coating to improve the camera's image quality by helping to reduce, repel and remove unwanted dust from the sensor. Plus, stubborn particles can be removed automatically in post-production with Dust Delete Data and Canon's included Digital Photo Professional software.
The 50D is incredibly fast thanks to the DIGIC 4 processor - it allows for up to 6.3 fps continuous shooting, in bursts of up to 90 JPEG images (with a UDMA CF card). Furthermore, Canon's wide area AF system uses 9 individual cross type sensors, so stunning action sequences can be captured - even in low-light conditions - making the EOS 50D particularly suited to sports and wildlife shooting. The DIGIC 4 processor also delivers 14-bit image processing, for smooth gradation and natural-looking colors - as well as ensuring ultra-fast startup times and near-instant image review after shooting.
The 3.0" Clear View VGA LCD (920,000 pixels) provides an extra-large and wide angle-of-view image review, with plenty of clarity for accurate focus checks in playback. By switching to Live View mode - which displays a real-time image on the LCD - photographers can enjoy simplified shooting from awkward angles, or connect to a PC for remote shooting. In addition, the Live Mode offers three ways to auto focus: Quick AF, Live AF, and Face Detection Live AF, which optimizes focus based on faces detected in the frame - for fast, spontaneous portraiture. The camera even offers HDMI output for viewing images on an HDTV - directly from the camera.
Even with all of these high powered features, the EOS 50D features Canon's renowned intuitive EOS menu system, along with a Quick Control screen, for instant access to the most commonly-changed settings. There is also a Creative Auto mode that offers automatic focus and exposure - while still allowing the user to add creative 'tweaks' to settings such as background sharpness. Altogether the Canon EOS 50D is an excellent product for advanced amateur photographers and entry-level professionals.

I am a product photographer and I really appreciate the thought that Canon has put into the 20D-50D line of cameras. To be able to shoot tethered to a laptop, and now to see a live view on that laptop's screen, allows me to move my subjects on the set while I see them on my screen. This means that I can avoid jumping back and forth between the set and the viewfinder when posing my subjects, and my clients save the expense of an assistant.
Of course there are many other less esoteric things to recommend this camera as well. The image quality is great, though some reviews say some compromises were made to get the 15MP. Canon's chips are known for their noise-free images and this one is no exception. The controls are well thought out and while the interface will take some getting used to it seems to accommodate all the new features in elegant fashion. And there are many of them, aimed at amateurs and pros alike. One of the big challenges of owning this camera is figuring out which features matter to you and which don't. And at times the settings for all those features can get in the way, though Canon has tried to address that in the interface and controls.
Canon, and let's face it Nikon too, have set the bar so high that I don't even have to mention things like shutter lag and build quality (this body feels solid and sturdy). We take it all for granted, as we should I suppose.
So there have to be some negatives right? Here are mine, but I haven't worked with the camera much yet:
Still no shutter for the viewfinder, alas we continue to suffer the silly little rubber cover. I just use gaffer's tape.
The Digital Photo Professional and EOS utility, though full of most every feature you'd want and much improved from the days of the 20D, still sports a nightmarish interface with some strange behaviors that spawn window after window with no way to manage them all.
I don't know if it's the 28-135mm kit lens or the CMOS sensor but I am seeing a lot of chromatic aberration, or magenta/cyan fringing on the borders between light and dark areas in the images. I'll do some testing with another lens when I have a minute.
But overall this is an amazing camera and I thank Canon for offering all this capability and quality in what is still not considered a true professional camera. All I can say is my clients are happy, and so am I.

I have a 20d and a 40d, and I expected the 50d, with it's per-lens focus adjust, higher resolution lcd, live contrast focus, etc. to be a step up. Problem is, those features come with what I think is worse color noise than the 40d. Yes, with default jpeg noise reduction, the 50d noise at iso 1600 looks much like the 40d at iso 800 -- but the 40d doesn't use noise reduction at iso 800 to achieve that level of noise. So, not only does the 50d loose some of its' sensor resolution increase over the 40d by requiring additional noise reduction, but if your flow uses raw, there is more processing time for the 50d raws just to apply the default noise processing that wasn't necessary with the 40d. Even if I force the 50d to limit iso to 800 [loosing the advantage of auto iso], it doesn't seem quite as good as the 40d at 800.
Bottom line, great features, but seems, despite the description of the new sensor higher light gathering lens structure, it may have been a better product with a lower resolution sensor to keep the sensor noise under control.

Comments about EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera Kit with Canon 28-135mm IS Lens:
I bought this as a upgrade from an XSi. I already knew that I wanted a 50d, having used one before. I love the layout, the weight is perfect, and the digic4 is awesome. I will use this for weddings, portraits, and everyday. The 6.3fps and ISO noise control are the reasons I purchased this in the first place. Being able to use a slower zoom indoors without a flash is a great thing. AF at 2.8 and larger is great, especially with my 50 f1.4. The XSi had some trouble below 2.8, but the 50d is spot on and fast.

Comments about EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera Kit with Canon 28-135mm IS Lens:
I was in the market for my first DSLR with a budget of $900. My other options couold have been the Rebel T1i or T2i, but I did not need video and the image quality from the 50D is just a little bit worse than the T2i in high ISO. This camera felt better built and fit my hands much better than any Rebel. The kit lens is my most used lens out of the 50mm f1.8 and tamron 17-50 non vc. Great camera if you do not want video and want a better built camera.

I was skeptical in purchasing a refurbished camera, however, I couldn't let the price difference pass. I love my 50D. Works fantastic, lens works equally as well, couldn't be happier with the purchase. If you have any doubts, just call B&H ask some questions, and I am sure you will make the choice I did.
Battery life lasted much longer than I expected it to last. Already have taken over 500 photos...good stuff.

Comments about EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera Kit with Canon 28-135mm IS Lens:
This is the first upgrade I've had in years and I love it. It feels very solid compared to my old Rebel. It has a lot of features that I am still getting used to, but I was still able to figure out enough to start shooting right away. The quality of the images is fantastic. My only complaint is that it really does have a hard time focusing in even moderately low light situations, which is really frustrating.

Comments about EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera Kit with Canon 28-135mm IS Lens:
I ordered this as a replacement for my aging 20D. Other than getting used to the new menu structure, I was able to start using the camera on Day one with significan improvements in the quality of my photographs. This came as a refurbished kit with the 28-135 lens and both items appeared as new. Althought the 28-135 lens is adequate, I didn't really need it since I already have a Tamron 18-250 for my walk around lense. I chose the 50D over the 60D since I preferred the build quality, my existing accessories from my 20D are compatible, and I really didn't think I'd use the video capabilities of the 60D.

In the photograph, which demonstrated that the lens was made in Japan, but to receive the product shows that the lens was made in taiwan, not japan. I decided to buy this kit because they said the lens was made in Japan. Now I compared my photos with photos taken with cheaper cameras and with the last one, the pictures are more clarity, sharpness and vivid colors.
I decided to pay more money for this camera thinking have better results but the results were disappointing.

This is my second 50D, I had a 20D and upgraded to the 50D last year. Used the camera last year at the Grand Canyon and took some great photos under a lot of different conductions (Low light, early morning, bright sun, inside, outside, cold, snow, …). Like the way the controls are easy to use and reach while shooting. I purchase this 50D so I would have a second camera with a different lens, so I would not have to change lens in the field. Have used the camera for sports and landscapes shooting and the camera performed very well.

Comments about EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera Kit with Canon 28-135mm IS Lens:
I love this camera although I have been having problems with the focus in the program modes. I often take pictures of multiple subjects and find that the camera focuses on the wrong subject within the frame. In my first day of usage where I was outdoors the entire day shooting a picnic with a lot of people, a large majority of the pictures I took had one person in focus and everyone else around them blurry. Part of the issue was that I was using a super fast lens or sometimes a 300MM which with the digital multiplication factor ends up being 480MM so depth of field is an issue. I will have to work to create some custom programs to overcome this.
