I use a digital SLR for landscape photography, but when getting together with friends or family, this slim and unobtrusive camera works much better. I enjoy the shirt-pocket size and speedy response from power-up. In Program mode without flash, you can point and shoot in under a second. In Program mode with flash, you can point and shoot in about 3 seconds (the flash REALLY slows things down). It has a nice, 4x zoom that moves pretty quickly, and the autofocus works great in all but the dimmest of light. Battery life is very good with NiMH, and I appreciate Canon using the standard AA size. Video mode works nicely and the large back LCD looks great. I can't see that the Image Stabilization really does much relative to earlier Canon Powershot series that do not have it. Construction is adequate for minor bumps, but is not going to withstand lots of abuse. The flash itself has a limit of about 10 feet, beyond which the subjects are dark. The power and menu buttons are very small and often awkward, but that's apparently the tradeoff for the nice small camera size. My biggest complaint is that after a picture is snapped, the camera "freezes" for ~6 seconds while it processes, that is to say that the fastest you can take pictures is about every 6 seconds (at the highest resolution). For its price, I am happy with this camera. It does everything I need it to do, if not excellently, than at least competently.

Purchased as an upgrade to an A520, it looked the same and I assumed (what a mistake!) it would be the same camera - now 10 megapixel + image stabilization. What a horror when I discovered: no aperture priority / shutter priority / manual mode - no direct way to adjust shutter speed or aperture! Also, spot metering and exposure lock only seem to function with the LCD display, NOT with the viewfinder. These details are not even addressed in the manual (also much inferior to the old A520's manual). On the plus side, within it's profound limitations, it does deliver a decent image in good lighting. I really am sorry I gave the A520 to my daughter, thinking this would be an upgrade. Oh, I also don't like the shutter - it is completely silent (electronic?), therefore one is never certain of the exact moment of exposure.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A1000 IS Digital Camera (Brown):
I recently needed a new cheap portable camera and after very little thought about it, bought this Canon A1000. It is hard to believe how far things have progressed in the last few years. Low light performance is quite good compared to my point and shoot Sony bought just two or three years ago. Focus is quick and image quality is fairly sharp; likely helped by the image stabilization. Nice also are the little things like adjustable self timers. It may be a cheap and simple camera but dig down into the menus and it offers more for the money than you might expect. It does not feel very substantial compared to the metal body cameras but it works and it is light; which is a big plus. It's the camera I can keep with me without feeling encumbered by it. I like it so far and if it holds up well, will like it into the future.

This is third Canon PowerShot that I have purchased from B&H. Its simple to use and the picture quality is great for the money. Canon has managed to slim down their PowerShot models, while still being able to use standard AA batteries (I don't particularly like to use proprietary rechargeable batteries).

I purchased this camera before I went on vacation. The camera was everything and more I had expected. The quality of photos are fantastic. The video camera was great. I expected nothing less from a Canon Product. Would definitely recommend camera. The only downside was the constant need to replace the batteries. Small price to pay for a reasonably priced quality camera.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A1000 IS Digital Camera (Brown):
We use our two A 1000's for vacation and snap shots of our grandkids. It is compact, takes great shots, easily the equal of what we get with our EOS 20D SLRs. Controls are easy to use, and it has more features than we ever expected from such a small camera.
The only negative is the slow recycle time when using the flash.

I use the camera at family functions and on trips.
The Pictures are clear and true to actual color. However the LCD viewfinder is difficult to read in bright sunlight. In indoor shots there is a delay from the time you click until the picture is exposed.

Comments about Canon PowerShot A1000 IS Digital Camera (Brown):
This camera just has the most bang for the buck. We wanted a camera that had a lot of features and didn't stick us with proprietary batteries and memory. Here you get all that cannon has to offer while using AA batteries and a standard SD chip. Another must have for us was a view finder. No one likes taking pictures at the beach or in the sunny countryside when you can't see the lcd screen, and you can conserve some good battery time when you need to. It does have a long lag time sometimes, but I'm not sure if this is just when we use the flash or not. I still have more to figure out about it, but I would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a solid point and shooter.

One of the best feature I found usefull so far is that it saves pictures & goes back to the shoot mode rather fast. I would like to see a better soom in and out range though.
