This camera takes beautiful photos and is easy to use if you're familiar with previous power shots. It is frustratingly slow in focusing and becoming ready for another photo, when, for example, one is trying to take a photo of a castle in clearings between trees, driving along the highway...
Definitely get rechargeable batteries! Also, set the size of your photos or you'll need a lot of memory!

At 129 US dollars the Canon A1000IS is hard to beat. If you're into still shot photography, scenery and landscapes this camera is perfect for you if you are a novice or semi-professional. The purple colour reminds me of the often purple coloured lamborghini countach and you get a discount off the price for that too. If you are into high speed sports photography and like to manually control shutter speed then forget this camera. It does just about anything you want including clear and detailed macro shots but the only real element left out is high speed sports photography and manual shutter control. Otherwise a great little camera for the 129 US dollar cost.

I am a home inspector and document my findings with digital photos that I label and email to my clients. I take 25 to 75 photos per inspection at the lowest mp setting and get very good clarity. The 32 mb card is more than adequate. I need a view finder as some shots are done in glaring sunlight or in near total darkness at which time the screen is useless. It does go through alkaline batteries quickly. I now use nickel-metal hydride rechargeable. The on/off button is a little difficult to activate with gloves. It turns on and off quickly. Hopefully it will withstand the dusty environments(crawlspaces).

I shoot semi pro with all olympus gear, but my wife was tired of having to lug out the gear to get a quick snap shot of our two kids.

The camera is really easy to operate and it preforms just like it is advertised. I love the stabilizer effect, because i have very shaky hands. Something I did not anticipate is the minual amount pictures you get with the memory card provided for you. On a Canon SD Memory Card (32) you can only take 10 pictures. But, besides that I have had no surprises and am really pleased with it.
