Sharpener Pro 3.0 from Nik Software is a plug-in application for use with the Adobe Photoshop family and Apple Aperture. The application is used to sharpen photos. It uses U Point technology for selective sharpening, allowing you to create superior prints of digital images.

After trying several sharpening plug-ins, I find Sharpener Pro 3.0 to be the most complete, intuitive and easy to use software available that produces professional results. Sharpener Pro 3.0 provides the most options for applying sharpening effects: global, "U Point" control points, and brush. This gives the user complete "selective" control over how much sharpening to apply in any part of an image. Other sharpening programs apply sharpening adjustments globally, which isn't always desireable. Similar to other advanced sharpener plugins, Sharpener Pro 3.0 lets you apply sharpening at two stages in your workflow: first at input to make corrections during RAW conversion, then at output where the amount of sharpening is determined by how the final image will be viewed (monitor, injet print, halftone print, etc), size of final image, and viewing distance. In addition, Sharpener Pro 3.0 works in both Lightroom and Photoshop. Sharpener Pro 3.0 has replaced all other sharpening plugins I have tried in the past.

In the past, I have had great success with Nik Software. Silver Effects, Define, Color Efex Pro: all great. I'm giving this one star instead of zero because I'm sure they must have meant well. Nice interface. However, the product crashed my Photoshop every time I used it. Reloading, rebooting didi nothing. The worst part is that Nik customer service ignored my request for assistance. After what seemed to be a typical computer acknowledgment and report that I would hear form them, nothing ever came of it. Now, I can only assume it was a bad product and not anything that could've been corrected. Very disappointed all around.

I have prints hanging on walls from Hawaii to London and I can't beat Nik Sharpener Pro 3.0. Everytime I went one on one with Nik Sharpener Pro 3.0 the software won. It saves paper and time. Sharpen selected areas and control amounts of sharpening without taking time for layer masks. Make your own presets for one button sharpening. The sharpening is specific to the presentation, paper type and size print. The only question I have is," Where has this been all my life?" Try it and you will buy it!

Every raw digital photo needs some form of sharpening. This tool gives you lots of control over what areas or colors are to be sharpened and to what degree. Very powerful, can be very subtle or razor sharp. You do need to be careful as with any sharpening, not to overdue it. Lots of options. There are two stages for sharpening, one at the raw stage and one for the final output, ie: display, inkjet, etc. I like all the options on the output sharpening. Awsome product.

- Great pre-sharpener routine that doesn't over sharpen RAW images.
- Fantastic output sharpener that links the image to both output size and media, e.g., web or inkjet printer to provide the optimum sharpening without introducing unwanted artifacts (halos).
- User has control over final sharpening--the software simply provides a very good starting (or even end) point. I believe Nik's software provides a little more control and a little more sharpness than Bruce Fraser's High Pass Sharpening routine, a routine that I've used until I purchased this product.
- While the software plug-in is intuitive to use, it would be beneficial to read the comprehensive user guide for complete understanding and mastery of the plug-in before attempting any serious work.

I've never seen an image that didn't need sharpening. This plug-in is easy to install and use, it does just as advertised. Used with Photoshop, it gives the added bonus of the brush which translates to added control. With Sharpener Pro 3.0 you have the freedom to use automatic sharpening or Nik, U-Point technology, sharpen with a click of the pen/mouse.

This is no miracle product but it works well if you take the time to learn to use it... it does not work on every photo... and if you use too much "sharpening," you end up with a worthless photograph. The longer I use it, the better my results but, again, it has clear limitations and it is over-priced, IMHO.
