Nikon's AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens is a welcome addition to the Nikon DX-format DSLR systems, and an ideal counterpart to the D90 DSLR. This versatile optic offers much of the benefits of the enormously-popular 18-200mm VR lens but in a lighter, smaller body that takes a smaller filter as well.
The AF-S Silent Wave Motor in the 18-105mm VR yields speedy, silent, on-the-money AF performance with fulltime manual focus override. In particular, the AF-S motor keeps up with skittish, erratic subjects that overwhelm normal camera-driven-motor AF systems. You'll get more 'keeper' images of those fast-moving animals, athletes, children, vehicles and the like.
Along with the SWM (Silent Wave Motor), the 18-105 benefits from the VR Image Stabilizer built in to the lens, which will give you the ability to handhold the camera at shutter speeds up to three stops slower than would otherwise normally be possible. Always a benefit to a handheld pic, this is of particular usefulness whenever you're photographing slow-moving subjects in low light. The benefit of in-lens stabilization is seen in the viewfinder, making composing and capturing the image easier as well.
Note! Use of DX lenses are not recommended with 35mm cameras.

I bought this lens from B&H about a month ago. Before that I had 5 different lenses: 18-55, 11-18, 50, 70-300 and a lensbaby. But now after having this lens I find myself using the other lenses very rarely. THis is a great all purpose lens and the features I like most of this are:
* good range of zoom
* very sharp from edge to edge
* excellent close focussing capability
* the VR does a good job
The only con I can think of is the plastic mount, although every lens nowadays are coming with plastic mounts to reduce the weight and cost.
Check out my shots using this lens and D300 at shutterstock site, search with photographer as neelsky.
If you sort by "Newest first" the top 5 rows are shot using this lens.
This is a very newly released lens from Nikon and very few reviews are available on the internet.

I upgraded to this lens from a the kit 18-55mm DX (non VR) lens that I had with my D40 (which I sold). I needed a short range lens for my D90 and read good reviews about this lens.
The portrait and lanscape clarity and image quality is on par with or a little below the 18-55mm. The principal benefit here is the extended range.
I most shoot pictures of a perpetual motion machine, my border collie, and I have yet to get action shots that I am consistently happy with. If I think I am going to shoot an action shot, I need to put on the 55-200mm DX lens, which is an outstanding budget lens.
If I had it to do over again, would I buy this lens? I am not sure. If I shot more DX, I might investigate 16-85mm Nikkor lens. But I shoot mostly FX on big bodies with pro lenses, and the D90 is a just a walk-around for me.
So when I am out wiht my D90, it is the 18-105mm for portraits and landscapes and a reluctant switch to the 55-200mm for action. I had hoped to get more of an all-in-one for the 18-105mm range, but unfortunately it didn't turn out that way.
For people who are primarily shooting landscapes and portraits, I would give this lens 4 stars and recommend it. For those like me who are more concerned with action photos, you might want to investigate some alternatives before settling on this lens.

If one wants to reduce lenses when photographing urban and rural scenes, then this is the lens. It has the range to photograph a building and then focus on a detail.

Great base lens. Has a wide range for a base lens. Allows for a variety of shooting. VR adds even more to the lens. All I need now is a macro and a telephoto lens.

Comments about Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Autofocus Lens:
I recently purchased a Nikon 55-200mm and found myself needing to change it out for the original 18-55mm lens to capture closer shots. The 200mm range was nice, but not required that often and definitely not a good walk around lens. I then found this 18-105mm lens on Cameta. After receiving it I quickly realized this is the lens I should have purchased initially. Again, a very good walk around lens. It offers good range and quailty. It is much more versatile and a definite must have walk around lens.

I used this lens with my D3100 in weddings, sweet sixteen parties. It s has great auto FÖCUS . I have a 18-55 and a 70-200 and I constantly had to change lens but I can do a Lot of stuff without changing lens with this one.

Works well on my D5100, refurbished but looked like new, slower to focus than my 18-55 mm lens, otherwise great. Even the second-hand Tiffen filter looked like new and came in a plastic case.

Good assembly, good quality for a price.
The only concern is that vibration reduction (VR) function for some reason doesn't make significant difference.

You can t have it all, I know, but for somone who uses a camera not only with extreme care and on tripods, it is essential that a good camera will survive a small drop. Due to the cheap and not very sturdy plastic mount and ears, the latter break off easily. With some luck they come off more or less intact and you can glue them back on with some superglue, but that is far from guaranteed. Therefore, i recommend getting only the smaller and lighter kit lens and for more zoom, up to 105 and beyond, spend a bit more money and get a lens with a metal mound.

I bought my D7000 used and it didn't come with this kit lens, so I bought it to have a walking around lens. The range is great. I especially love that the focus ring is so close to the body of the camera because it makes controlling focus in a movie very easy. I do wish it had a metal mount, but that might be nitpicking for a lens of this price. It is nice and heavy and feels very sturdy.

My walk around lens on a D200. Light, fast enough, cheap and sharp. Just a bit of distortion on the wide end, but, nothing that can't be easily fixed. Other than the 35mm f/1.8G, the best value among DX lenses.

This is the first time I have purchased a refurbished lens for my camera and it is fantastic. I couldn't find any faults with it and the photos taken look fantastic. I will definitely look at a refurbished lens for my next purchase.

Comments about Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Autofocus Lens:
The lens turned out to be unexpectedly bulky and few test shots were neither good nor bad. I thought focus was not performing well. Another thing is - I do not know how to say it - while not cheap, it feels cheaply made, it just does not have that feel of Nikon equipment I otherwise like so much for years. I thought at least in some circumstances I would carry just 18-105 rather than 18-55 and 55-200 I already own. But the way this lens is made and they way it perfomrs made me stick to my current set-up and return it as "not as expected".

Comments about Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Autofocus Lens:
To be fair, I run an equipment loan center, and these lenses take a fair amount of abuse by college students. However as a long time Nikon user, this is why I picked Nikon over all of the available brands in the first place. If a camera with this lens on it is dropped, even lightly, the bayonet ears will come off faster than those of a newborn doberman. This had happend on two of these lenses so far, and partially on a third. Of all of the lense types we have, this is the only one that does this. This is also the only lens with a cheap plastic mount, the rest use metal.
On the up side, its a great all around lens that works really well for grab and go shoots. (As long as you can keep it on the camera.)

Excellent!
The range is just enough for every day shooting.
If you need more range, go for 55-200mm or 55-300mm, which are very good lenses.
For the kind of photos i shoot this lens is perfect.
