Nikon's AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens is a welcome addition to the Nikon DX-format DSLR systems, and an ideal counterpart to the D90 DSLR. This versatile optic offers much of the benefits of the enormously-popular 18-200mm VR lens but in a lighter, smaller body that takes a smaller filter as well.
The AF-S Silent Wave Motor in the 18-105mm VR yields speedy, silent, on-the-money AF performance with fulltime manual focus override. In particular, the AF-S motor keeps up with skittish, erratic subjects that overwhelm normal camera-driven-motor AF systems. You'll get more 'keeper' images of those fast-moving animals, athletes, children, vehicles and the like.
Along with the SWM (Silent Wave Motor), the 18-105 benefits from the VR Image Stabilizer built in to the lens, which will give you the ability to handhold the camera at shutter speeds up to three stops slower than would otherwise normally be possible. Always a benefit to a handheld pic, this is of particular usefulness whenever you're photographing slow-moving subjects in low light. The benefit of in-lens stabilization is seen in the viewfinder, making composing and capturing the image easier as well.
Note! Use of DX lenses are not recommended with 35mm cameras.

I bought this lens from B&H about a month ago. Before that I had 5 different lenses: 18-55, 11-18, 50, 70-300 and a lensbaby. But now after having this lens I find myself using the other lenses very rarely. THis is a great all purpose lens and the features I like most of this are:
* good range of zoom
* very sharp from edge to edge
* excellent close focussing capability
* the VR does a good job
The only con I can think of is the plastic mount, although every lens nowadays are coming with plastic mounts to reduce the weight and cost.
Check out my shots using this lens and D300 at shutterstock site, search with photographer as neelsky.
If you sort by "Newest first" the top 5 rows are shot using this lens.
This is a very newly released lens from Nikon and very few reviews are available on the internet.

I upgraded to this lens from a the kit 18-55mm DX (non VR) lens that I had with my D40 (which I sold). I needed a short range lens for my D90 and read good reviews about this lens.
The portrait and lanscape clarity and image quality is on par with or a little below the 18-55mm. The principal benefit here is the extended range.
I most shoot pictures of a perpetual motion machine, my border collie, and I have yet to get action shots that I am consistently happy with. If I think I am going to shoot an action shot, I need to put on the 55-200mm DX lens, which is an outstanding budget lens.
If I had it to do over again, would I buy this lens? I am not sure. If I shot more DX, I might investigate 16-85mm Nikkor lens. But I shoot mostly FX on big bodies with pro lenses, and the D90 is a just a walk-around for me.
So when I am out wiht my D90, it is the 18-105mm for portraits and landscapes and a reluctant switch to the 55-200mm for action. I had hoped to get more of an all-in-one for the 18-105mm range, but unfortunately it didn't turn out that way.
For people who are primarily shooting landscapes and portraits, I would give this lens 4 stars and recommend it. For those like me who are more concerned with action photos, you might want to investigate some alternatives before settling on this lens.

As always the people at B&H are the best. I have been looking at wide angle lenses for a while and called B&H for some shopping advise. The sales person pointed me to a refurbished lens when i realated my budget concerns. The quality of this lens is first-rate. Images a super sharp and clear its going to be great for both landscapes and portraits.
Thank you B&H !!!!

Great walk around lens! I opted to buy this one for my D5100 rather then 18-55mm and 55-200mm that come in a kit. Gives me enough reach without extra bulk of a second lens. I didn't have a chance to use it much(yet), but so far I'm pleased with results. Item was refurbished but looks brand new (except for plain box). It came with all the accessories that come with new lens (front and back cap, lens hood and soft protective case). Saving was substantial comparing to new one. B&H shipped promptly and item was well packed. Highly recommended!

I previously owned this lens when I had my first DSLR, a D60, and really enjoyed using. I have since learned that every zoom lens has it's peak apertures and focal lengths. I now have a second one of these lenses and appreciate it even more for being an excellent everyday lens. It is light, versatile, and consistently has very good resolution. It does not have a fast focus or low light ability unless your subject is static and then the VR works quite well. I have some very expensive Nikon glass, but I still enjoy using this lens and have gotten some great shots with it. (It is sharper than the 18-200)

Wide angle up to mid-range zoom for all around photography......Quick focus and great lens quality......
This is an all-around good lens, you won't need much else with this lens unless you want the long zoom 200 or more because this lens is actually a 157mm with the crop factor in DX photography on the Nikon.

I was always leery about the sharpness of my third party lens in a similar zoom range. Now, there is proof. For a short zoom lens, this is what sharpness should look like. Very light weight lens but good build quality. Focus is very fast and accurate. Great for walk around and general use.

Comments about Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Autofocus Lens:
I bought this lens to replace my old 18-70 that met an unfortunate end on a recent trip to France. So far I find that it performs very well, and I'm happy to have the extra extension over my old lens. However, it seems a bit heavy, but if that's the penalty for quality, so be it. I use the lens primarily for landscape, and to a lesser extent, friends and family.

Comments about Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Autofocus Lens:
I find the optical quality quite outstanding for the price. I did a shootout with my 50/1.8 AIS manual focus nikkor (which I used to find extremely sharp in the film days). This lens had similar sharpness. Note that this lens was practically wide open at f5.6 whereas the MF nikkor was in its sweet spot at f5.6.
If you throw in an excellent zoom range and VR (which improves handholding by a couple stops), and this is really very convenient.
I compared with the 18-200 zoom, but this really handles much better on the smaller nikon bodies like the d5100.
I have heard that the plastic mount on the lens is fragile; keeping my finger crossed.
I got the Grey version of this lens; seems fine. I'm happy to save $100.

I went into B & H having only ordered online before. The customer service, as on the phone, was fantastic. As for the lens, it has been phenomenal. I shoot DSLR of my daughter, still and movement, and I use the same lens on alpine montaineering trips. I appreciate the consistent photos. As in most cases, I usually don't get a second chance to climb the same route on a mountain.
