Sony's Alpha DSLR-A900 SLR Digital Camera (Body Only), their first "full frame" model, has alerted the industry and consumers in the DSLR world that they're in the digital SLR camera business for the long haul.
The DSLR-A900 starts with a 24 x 35.9mm size CMOS sensor developed especially for this camera. Though that imaging canvas is utterly packed with pixels, the pixels themselves dominate the landscape of the image receiving area, instead of the elements of image sensors which are necessary but not actually collecting the image. Indeed, the A900's pixels are larger than the fine consumer-grade Alpha 700, despite having twice as many pixels.
On the physical side of things, the Alpha's designed for professional use: all operations are weather-sealed, its high-performance shutter's tested to 100,000 cycles, and its viewfinder (the forgotten critical SLR element in the age of squinty APS-C size viewfinder dominance) is as good as they come. Despite these claims, together with batteries and a memory card it tips the scales at ~2 lbs (900g), a good competitive number especially considering the enjoyable view.
Beyond physical elements, the DSLR-A900's got plenty of brains. To speed up throughput for pro sports and action use, Sony's employed dual "Bionz" image processors. Its two analog-to-digital engines swallow large chunks of information, shoving up to ~5 frames per second into a fast memory card-quite bold capacity considering those big RAW files.
With its image quality, handling ease, robust construction, and brilliant viewfinder, the DSLR-A900 should prove a serious tool for professionals and advanced consumers. The benefits of 'full frame' are plentiful; better dynamic range, more natural skin rendition, a cushy viewing experience and superior capacity to blur backgrounds. Super wide angle zooms start at focal lengths more befitting professional instruments, and are awash upon the secondhand market.

- The 35.9 x 24mm 35mm-size "Exmor" CMOS image sensor is ~2.35x larger than typical APS-C size sensors, and the large capture area affords more sharpness, tonal graduation, and depth of field control. Best of all, pixels themselves dominate the square footage.

- Glass pentaprism optical viewfinder with 100% coverage, 0.74x magnification, and 20mm eye relief. Low magnification makes the composition canvas small, distant, and unengaging. Though tough to have long eye relief and full coverage without obnoxiously large glass atop an SLR, Sony's succeeded here. There's also a built-in shutter blind and integrated -3 to +1 dioptric correction, and bringing it to the eye disengages the LCD screen.

- Alpha 900's in-camera stabilization redefines common belief; a steadying effect of ~4 shutter speed steps, but with a full frame. Previous in-camera stabilizing corrected movements of ~15x22mm image receiving areas within 24 x 36mm 'full frame' confines, as full frame in-camera correction was believed to result in wider, taller, and thicker housings. At 6.1 x 4.6 x 3.2" (156 x 117 x 82mm), it isn't too big a camera-a little thick, but within professional DSLR standards. After shooting Velvia 50 for years I finally switched to digital when Minolta came out with the Maxxum 7d, so I could use all my lenses. Well being new to the digital world I didnt know about sensor size and changing the focal length and not to mention the very poor detail in the 6mp, which at the time wasnt bad, but was never satisfied with my pictures. I finally did it and went with the Sony A900. The full frame world is a very very beautiful thing, and what makes this even better sony kept the great functionality from Minolta and integrated their great sensor and processors. What an amazing camera and all my old lenses are back to normal focal length.

I purchased the Sony A900 just before the holidays in December 2011, after considerable debate between the Nikon and Canon equivalents. When I looked at the lens options for all three it was clear the Sony was 'seemingly' at a disadvantage. However, the Zeiss 135/1,8 on the Alpha is pretty hard to beat, and the upcoming models made my decision easier.
The camera build and ergonomics of this particular Sony is truly fantastic! The graphics on the various websites make it appear elongated when it really isn't. It's more of an optical illusion by virtue of the conical crown, which I find visually appealing. Likewise, it's not as heavy to the hold as I anticipated. The menu arrangement and access to controls are so simple that even a politician could figure it out.
In operation its easy to understand why this thing' still commands the admiration of its followers and the hefty price tag. Yes, this will most likely be the last mirror flipper in the Sony line but I'm confident this will be around my neck for some time to come.

I bought a A900 in 2008 ? and sold it after 6 months to get 5D Mark II & D3s - but here in ultimo 2011 I bought A900 again, using Zeiss 24-70mm Lens and Minolta APO 200mm F2.8 - the best combination in all ways, you dont need to adjust/Edit pictures shot with A900 - a fantastic Camera.

This being my third DSLR, (a100 and a350) it has more than met my needs and functions. controls are placed just where they need to be. custom functions with the Fn key highlighting the LCD screen if a life save. No more multiple menus to negotiate just quick and easy. LCD monitor and the preview function are something I didn't think I would use. But taking fall foliage pics I have been using it a lot. Teaming it with the sony 50mm macro is great. having the extra stop down on the lens combined with the LCD functions is GREAT. Larger body is a great stabilizer when using long lens.

I am an advanced amateur and find the alpha 900 to be perfect in my hands. It was a natural progression to transition from the minolta, now sony, film slrs to this very advanced dSLR. I find the overall weight and stature to exude quality. It is very durable and feels solid all the time. One very useful, albeit somewhat down played, feature is the intelligent preview. I simply love the ease of this feature. It truly makes rendering a successful capture of subjects with challenging (or changing) lighting on the fly almost fool-proof. I believe that this feature should be incorporated in other bodies, although, it is only in the a850 and a900. The only negative I note would be the absence of video capability. That being said, I did not buy this camera to take video. I just mention it, since many people like to comment on this feature as well.

I use the a900 for portraiture and weddings. The viewfinder is huge, bright, and versatile with additional focusing screens available. The image quality is superb at lower ISOs with fantastic color reproduction, and not to mention 24MP!
The ONLY think I do not like about this camera is the high ISO performance, but with a good RAW converter, the noise is hardly an issue.

I've been a Minolta/Sony user for years and have been waiting to upgrade my a700 to the full frame a900. I used it for a baby shoot yesterday and I absolutely love this camera. The controls are almost identical to the a700 so it was easy to get used to. The screen is bright and beautiful and the entire shooting experience was a pleasure. I was a bit disappointed that the camera can only use CF cards up to 16GB so I'll have to keep my larger cards with the a700. But other than that, I am so glad I made the investment!

Some people say it's heavy, but it's a full frame DSLR so it's going to be heavier than your a700 or whatever.
For some reason I've always been a Minolta shooter. I'm not really sure why, and it took them so long to get into the DSLR thing that several times I almost switched to one of the big two. These days I'm glad I didn't. This camera is incredibly good.
If you really, really want to nitpick, the shutter/mirror is maybe a bit loud. And I still don't think Sony has caught up with the big two in terms of lens lineup, but it sure has gotten a lot better.
Sony is clearly committed to making great photographic equipment and will eventually compete with Canon and Nikon for the pro market if this camera is any indication.

This takes really nice images but it is way to heavy... I shoot events and after an hour my arms felt like they were going to fall off... Not a very good unit for events or anything that you will need to hold on to it for very long...
