The Canon EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera features an APS-C sized 15.1-megapixel CMOS sensor for superb quality images and the latest DIGIC 4 Image Processor to provide superior color reproduction, and improved ISO capabilities for uncompromised shooting even in the dimmest situations. It also features a 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor, supercharged Live View Function with Face Detection Live mode, plus a number of automatic Image Correction settings and HDMI output.
The 15.1-megapixel image sensor delivers ultra-detailed images and the redesigned photo diodes and microlenses of the sensor extend its light gathering capabilities to ensure improved high ISO performance and low noise. Furthermore, the camera's ISO sensitivity is an astounding 3200 with expanded sensitivity to an ultra-sensitive 12800. The Integrated Cleaning System includes a Self Cleaning Sensor Unit with a fluorine coating to improve the camera's image quality by helping to reduce, repel and remove unwanted dust from the sensor. Plus, stubborn particles can be removed automatically in post-production with Dust Delete Data and Canon's included Digital Photo Professional software.
The 50D is incredibly fast thanks to the DIGIC 4 processor - it allows for up to 6.3 fps continuous shooting, in bursts of up to 90 JPEG images (with a UDMA CF card). Furthermore, Canon's wide area AF system uses 9 individual cross type sensors, so stunning action sequences can be captured - even in low-light conditions - making the EOS 50D particularly suited to sports and wildlife shooting. The DIGIC 4 processor also delivers 14-bit image processing, for smooth gradation and natural-looking colors - as well as ensuring ultra-fast startup times and near-instant image review after shooting.
The 3.0" Clear View VGA LCD (920,000 pixels) provides an extra-large and wide angle-of-view image review, with plenty of clarity for accurate focus checks in playback. By switching to Live View mode - which displays a real-time image on the LCD - photographers can enjoy simplified shooting from awkward angles, or connect to a PC for remote shooting. In addition, the Live Mode offers three ways to auto focus: Quick AF, Live AF, and Face Detection Live AF, which optimizes focus based on faces detected in the frame - for fast, spontaneous portraiture. The camera even offers HDMI output for viewing images on an HDTV - directly from the camera.
Even with all of these high powered features, the EOS 50D features Canon's renowned intuitive EOS menu system, along with a Quick Control screen, for instant access to the most commonly-changed settings. There is also a Creative Auto mode that offers automatic focus and exposure - while still allowing the user to add creative 'tweaks' to settings such as background sharpness. Altogether the Canon EOS 50D is an excellent product for advanced amateur photographers and entry-level professionals.

I compared Nikon and Canon models for several months before buying the 50D. I am pleased with my decision. If thought that I would realize only marginal high ISO performance compared with the Canon 5D MKII and Nikon D700, but have not seen any situation where the 50D's perormance at ISO 800 does not meet my needs. With the lenses that I own, I am generally able to work in the ISO 100 to ISO 400 range. For me the high resolution of the 50D is a plus because I end up with at least some minor cropping on about two out five saved photos. The lower priced Nikon D90 was also a strong consideration, but the superior build-quality of the 50D, along with the included software for processing raw files justified the higher price. The user interface of the 50D fits my shooting style. By the way, the focusing system, while not as sophisticated as that of the D700, works extremely good in the field. It locks on fast and accurately, which is all I could expect from a camera.

I use this camera mostly for portrait and bird photography. It handles OK, burst is great for taking picture of birds flying. Would have preferred SD card instead of CF. Very disspointed with its reliability. Own it for just over 4-months, about 5,800 shots taken and is on route to service. Out of the blue it gave a err-50 code which left the camera doing a strange noise and useless. Had I been at a weding it would have been a nightmare.

Comments about EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera Kit with Canon 18-200mm EF-S IS Lens:
I really enjoyed the digital SLR camera Canon EOS 50D has 15.1-megapixel CMOS APS-C and the sensor was improved by the use of the newly created gapless micro lenses that work on each pixel to reduce noise also allowed it to expand sensitivity up to ISO 12800. The digital SLR camera Canon 50D has processing speed faster, it has DIGIC 4 image processor that enables capture up to 6.3 frames per second (fps) in continuous mode (burst mode up to 90 Large / Fine JPEG or 16 RAW images in a UDMA CF card). I recommend an excellent option for photographers who enjoy capturing the perfect moment in the most clear. The Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens is a wide-range zoom, light and compact, designed specifically for the line of digital SLR cameras that use the EOS lens mount EF-S lower. Combining powerful performance with high image quality, this lens offers the equivalent of 29-320mm in 35mm format. It is ideal for use as a zoom lens for general purpose, providing coverage of a wide perspective for telephoto. The Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS features Image Stabilizer technology to compensate for 4 points of the Canon. This allows use of shutter speeds up to 4 times slower with no perceptible increase in image blur. The automatic panning detection automatically turns off the Image Stabilizer in horizontal or vertical direction when following moving subjects.

This is the best zoom lens I've ever owned. The images are crisp and beautiful. I wish I could get a 1.2 out of it at 18mm but that's too much to ask.

I moved up from a basic digital to 50D and the transition to get started was simple. My use for the camera ranges from family photos to landscapes, sporting events and some photo sales. I put everything on auto and started getting great shots immediately! This is a camera I can definitely grow into. The 18 - 200 lens is amazing as well.

Comments about EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera Kit with Canon 18-200mm EF-S IS Lens:
After over 10 years of waiting, I finally graduated to digital. I bought the EOS 50D because I was used to the Canon EOS 620 I bought in 1988 and have been using until now. Glad I finally graduated. Wow, I bought a professional photo studio in a camera case. If this camera cannot do it, it cannot be done. Being a fledgling user of this camera, I let it do the work.
I have done a few weddings and love personal photography. Yes there is lens drift, but I use a piece of black electrical tape. The 18 to 200mm lens allows me to not have to change lenses and worry about dust on the sensor. I started using the camera at a military reunion this past October. I didn't have to worry about film. I took over 510 pictures at the reunion. Then another 400+ in the next two days while on vacation. Did a lot of indoor shots without flash. (I need to get a more powerful flash.) Color balance without flash was excellent.
Outdoor shots taken quickly (photo ops are gone in a flash, no pun intended) are fabulous.
If you buy the Hoya Filter kit and the timer, I recommend getting the Lowepro Rezo 170 AW bag. Then everything fits into the bag...batteries, CF cards, filters, cables etc.
You will never go wrong adding the EOS 50D to your photography arsenal. I will summarize by saying WOW. Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious.

As an experienced amateur photographer, I am really impressed with the 50D. I used it right out of the box for a weekend of shooting and took exceptional shots on the Auto function. Now that I am getting into the instruction booklet, I am experiencing a variety of creative options. Frankly, I don't know that I'll ever fully tap this camera's potential, but I know it's there if I need it.
The camera is a little heavy, but it has real substance. All cameras in this quality range have this weight.

Comments about EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera Kit with Canon 18-200mm EF-S IS Lens:
I came with high expectation for the 50D. It came highly recommended by a friend. And I am not disappointed. The 50D gives superb portraits, even without flash, and wonderful pictures of nature. Controls are pretty easy to use.
My down side will be that the 50D is a little bit heavy at first but you quickly get use to it.
One other thing I like about the 50D is that I do not have to worry about the battery. It lasts enough time to let me take the pictures and it recharges quickly.
With a good grip, long lasting battery, and more important, great pictures, the 50D is the must of the semi-pro camera you should have.

I put the camera on "auto" and look into the viewfinder. It tells me the shutter speed, the aperture, and the ISO setting. Then I go to the "manual" mode and recreate those settings. I'm starting to get the hang of what settings are best for different situations. This camera gives me loads of useful information. (plus, it takes very good pictures.)

Had purchased the 40D for my son for school a year ago, purchased this one for myself after using his, he is QUITE jealous now. The pixel difference makes enlarging the pictures much better than the 40D. I'm sure he'll be borrowing this for his photography competitions.

This is my second DSLR camera, I recently upgraded from a Canon Rebel. I LOVE this camera! The pictures are clear and crisp, equipment feels solid and sturdy, and once learned the functions are easy to use. No regrets with this purchase.
The 18-200mm lens is great for wider angle photos in comparision to the other kit that was available. I did alot of research before purchasing and could not be happier...highly recommend.
