I bought this item in order to view HD TV on my laptop. I own a DELL XPS M1710 running Windows Vista 32-bit with a screen resolution of 1920x1200 pixels. So my hardware is nice to view an support HD digital television which has on it's 1080i specification an equivalent resolution of 1920 x 1080 interlaced.
I live in Mexico City and here we have over the air near 10 open and free channels.
The main reason for the purchase was to be able to watch the free FIFA 2010 soccer World Cup match games while on the go. Here in house I do not own a HD TV and this WinTV-HVR-950Q USD adapter is my first experience with ATSC HD TV reception.
The hardware installation can not be easier, just plug the item on a free USB and that's all. On the software side I went to the manufacturer web site and downloaded the latest drivers and the WINTV7 software application, just in case the drivers and software that came with the CD-ROM would not be up to date. Fast and easy to find. Installing the software was almost automatic and all I needed was a quick reboot. Not more than 5 minutes.
Once installing the drivers and software I plug the portable antenna, open the WINTV7 application and run the channel scanner. All these steps indoors near a big window, where all channels were found at the first attempt.
The experience and image quality was beautiful. I can not be happy. I could view any channel on a window of any size or at full screen. On full screen mode, since my laptop has a bigger resolution that the HD, two black bars are present at the top and bottom in order to use only the 1920x1080 pixels and not the 1920x1200 total.
You can not be wrong with this purchase, specially if your target machine has the needed screen resolution. The best way to enjoy HD TV without buying a new TV set.
The only con I can found is the power of the portable included antenna. If I try to watch TV indoors in a room to far for an open view to the sky or any windows, the TV signal goes weak or even some channels can be lost. That of course is expected, since the main intention of this kit is portability. If you need, a self powered and bigger ATSC antenna can be purchased. Outdoors and running on laptop battery powers there is no problem at all for reception and image quality.
Hope this helps. Highly recommended.

Connecting to an antenna produces a wonderful pictures and records great for display on a HDTV. I did have some problems with the ClearQAM in Torrance, but i primarily bought it for connecting to the antenna.

I had one of these already and it works great with an external antenna. Easy to install. I use my computer as a DVR and since Window media center supports recording 2 shows at once I purchased a second device.

However the channel numbers don't match the cable listings in our city. Hard to find the station. The unit gets warm. Set up and programming for recording was easy. We like it. Cheaper than buying another TV.

Comments about Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q USB TV Tuner:
I bought this gizmo to record a bunch of old movies off my cable DVR, and it's performing up to expectations. There is a weird glitch which happens if you start a recording at the same moment when you play the DVR, so you have to time your recording for about five to ten seconds after the program has begun, then use the DVR back button to go to the beginning.
Having your coax cable come into the pc through the WinTV tuner gives you a lot of options you don't get with direct cable-in. You can resize the window every which way (even down to a one-inch box), and drop it behind work windows or have it stay on top. The software works well, but it's necessary to close it from time to time and reopen it fresh. Another inconvenience: once you install it on one USB port, you have to reinstall the software if you move it to another USB, so just keep it on one port--at least that's my experience. I'm using Win 7, fyi.
Hauppauge has provided very thorough customer support, a major plus. Installation was easy, but you have to close pay attention to the first few steps.
I have Time Warner Cable in Brooklyn and was able to configure the thing for both analog cable and digital TV for when the cable goes out, which it does all the time in this area. Digitial TV is hit or miss, however, as you have to learn your best antenna spots. Once you lock it in, however, the picture quality is the best I've ever seen.
Very good product overall. Some people have said it gets hot, and it does, but not THAT hot. Recording software works, but could use an upgrade. It would be nice if it had a burn function. Still worth the $$.

This product works well and the picture is very good just coming from the little antenna that comes with it. Wonder how it will look when I attach it to my antenna? It is a little slow at times, probably because of bandwidth usage but overall a very good way to capture over the air transmissions!

Comments about Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q USB TV Tuner:
The product works just as described. My only question is why does it not pick up more channels on the analog cable. It stops at 96 and I get channels in the hundreds. Maybe I need the set top box as well. I have not tried this yet but overall I am happy with the product. I just wish I could watch another channel while recording. Another of their models I am sure has this but I wanted to stay in price range and have a tv anyway. Might as well us it huh.

Comments about Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q USB TV Tuner:
The device is remarkably small and unobtrusive and works quite well. Setup's straightforward: screw in coax input from local cable company, plug it in, install software and scan for channels. Picks up all the analog channels fine, as well as finding the Clear QAM unencrypted channels for the requisite local digital HD broadcast stations---and some unexpected Clear QAM HD channels, as well. The remote control is a bit flimsy and you often have to press a button multiple times before it registers ... but for the price it's hard to complain. HD picture is beautiful on my Dell Vostro laptop through HDMI cable to Epson 1080p projector.

Hooled it up to windows vista computer and it picked it up right away to work with windows media center just like I wanted it to.
Comments about Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q USB TV Tuner:
Plug and play. Go through a few set up procedures and you are in business. I do not, however, subscribe to the claim that "Media Player" is the best tool. I prefer the "Win TV" option for more flexibility.
Have fun with the device!!!

It picks up all the channels from my cable provider even channels my box wont. The only drawback is that it does not pick them up on the channels provided by the cable company so using the DVR function is difficult. It will still record but it has to be done manually. The picture is clear and the remote works with no problems. It is what I was looking for and I would recommend this to anyone wanting to watch TV on their computer and the fact that it is USB makes it easier than opening the computer to install and usable on my laptop and desktop which makes it great for travel.

Comments about Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q USB TV Tuner:
I cannot say how the MS-Windows functionality of the unit works, but after a little cleverness and patience, I managed to get the stick running beautifully on Linux. When connecting the coaxial cable the metal screw becomes extremely hot; the stick could double as a hand-warmer for cold days after an extended viewing session. I don't leave it plugged into the coaxial when inactive - I worry it might melt the inside bits. If your PC overheats easily, then best to use this stick for only an hour or two at a time. I'm trying to cut-down my viewing hours anyway - so if you're an optimist call it a 'feature'. Its replaced my small TV set in my Dorm room, and the quality of the picture and generous options are worth it for the price - I'm quite happy to have something so small & light yet functional! Despite the heat, I still recommend it!

I bought this tuner to use with my laptop. I got rid of cable about 6 months ago and built my own antenna. I was able to get all the local stations that I wanted. The only thing I was missing was a dvr. I bought this tuner, plugged it into my laptop, and windows media center did the rest. Now I can use my laptop as a dvr. It has worked flawlessly so far.

I am delpoyed with US Army in OEF, we have signal, but not always HDTV resources. This product brought our office closer to the outside world and current events by only a fraction of the cost of an HDTV. Makes my laptop much more multifunctional! I highly recommend!

I needed a easy-to-install gadget to allow me to watch TV on my PC and this product fits the bill. The only thing is that I don't know what clear QAM cable is and the 950Q certainly does not work in that mode with the cable TV I have - the 950Q works only when I set it up in the analog mode.
