I use these on the lenses of my 4x5 view cameras.

The 20" length is perfect. Not so long that it dangles or gets in the way. Not so short that it requires you to be alongside the camera instead of behind it. Short enough to wrap around the lens body for storage, long enough to reach to the rear of the camera. After 30+ years, I've tried a variety and I've gotten picky.

The cloth instead of plastic is nice, it seems to last longer and not come loose at the end connector the way plastic often does. Further, it's Black instead of silver, meaning there's less chance of an errant reflection showing up in a tabletop shot of a shiny object. Rare and not a big issue, but hey, elimination of one more silly thing that might go wrong is a Good Thing.

I could stand for it to have a slightly more sophisticated bulb lock, I personally prefer releases with the lock around the plunger, but the screw type is okay. I suspect my prejudice is based more on how it looks than how it works, both types work fine.

And of course, the price is right. I mean, it's a cable release, for goodness sake. But as I've grown older and crankier, I find a certain charm in things that work perfectly without getting in the way or costing a minor fortune. This unit fits that description.

I've owned this for a few weeks now, used it to capture long exposures with my x100 & haven't had a single problem. It's not the longest cable, but is a good length, I believe. I can roll it up and place it into my pocket it's so small. If you'd like to see the results google my name, or check out the stuff I've put on [@]/tomwehrle with the x100 and long exposures.

I have already put this poor thing to hard use and it is doing exactly what its supposed to do ... press my shutter button so that i do not shake the camera. I have pushed over 30+ rolls of 36 exp with it and it is working as it is supposed to. A highly recomended buy for an unsteady hand.

Comments about General Brand Cloth Cable Release with Lock - 20":

I love the cloth cable releases. They are much more flexible than the vinyl releases. The flexibility lessens the chance that movement of the cable will send vibrations or other movement to the camera during exposure. I use the shorter version for smaller cameras but the 20" length is very good for large format photography.

Im finding the release's screw lock to be very useful. Not only can it be used to keep the shutter open, but also helps with one hand operation by wrapping youur index finger around it.

I use this cable release with my Nikon FM10 and a Kiev 88CM.
The cable does what it says and does a very nice job but the design is not the best. Used it on my Kiev 88CM and it appears that the internal cable might have shrunken as it won't easily trigger the Kiev 88CM anymore.
The head, I guess that's how you call it, needs to be wider to make it easier to fully trigger the shutter as it would allow for better support and handling.
I would still recommend it though.

Smoothest available type of cable release. These are the best type to use because they impart the least amout of movement to the camera. The more rigid plastic sheathed releases are stiffer and cause more camera movement. The General brand releases are well made and should last a very long time. I have one for each of my LF lens.
