The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Lens is a standard lens with an ultra-bright f/1.4 aperture, which allows for fast, accurate shooting with available light. It is also the excellent choice for when a shallow depth of field is desired. An ideal portrait lens when used on a Nikon DX-format digital SLR, it approximates the angle of view similar to that of a 75mm lens on a Nikon FX-format digital SLR or a 35mm film camera.
The optical design of this lens minimizes flare and chromatic aberration. The SWM (Silent Wave Motor) feature ensures fast and quiet focusing action, and the nine-blade rounded diaphragm makes out-of-focus elements blend smoothly to produce natural-looking, harmonious backgrounds.
An ideal prime lens, perfect for full-length portraits, travel photography or any type of available-light shooting.
Note: G-type Nikkor lenses have no aperture control ring and are intended for use on Nikon D-SLRs that allow the lens aperture to be adjusted via the camera's command dial.

This is going to be the primary lens I'll keep on my camera for portraits and street photography for numerous reasons
1. It's small and light, hence very easy to carry
2. The wide open aperture (as low as 1.4) makes it ideal for low light photography without needing a flash
3. The shallow depth of field makes it ideal for portraits and opens up a whole range of interesting bokeh and blurred background photographs
4. Sturdy construction and a great lens for the price

I'm a full-time photographers of 9 years and this is my 3rd 50mm 1.4. The previous two were the Nikkor 1.4D model (which is still available on BH). The 50 has been a workhorse for me and has been used for pretty much every job I've been on. So, when the new 1.4G came out I got excited and sold off my other two 50s. I mean, cummon, Canon stepped up their game with the 1.2 and I assumed that this was Nikon's response.
I could not be more disappointed. The lens feels poorly made, it's lighter and most importantly... it is SLOOOOOOW. The image quality isn't any better than the previous lens. My 1.4 used to be my go-to lens for low light scenarios but this new lens doesn't respond well. I've stuck by Nikon for a long time and am really disappointed!!!
I'm about ready to put it up on CraigsList and buy a new 1.4D before they stop making it. I hope this review saves someone else from making the same mistake.

Top notch glass at a fantastic price! Every photographer needs a fast prime, no exceptions. Clear and fast focusing. F1.4 is even pretty sharp! Get a Pearstone PEOLC20B Onyx 20 Lens Case for this lens so you can toss it in your pocket and not have to worry about it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
A bit more Chromatic Aberration than I'd like- more-so seemingly than on my 35mm 1.8 DX format lens. I'm using it currently on a D7000 where the 35mm 1.8 is just about perfect. Images aren't as sharp as the 85mm 1.4 which performs stunningly. Bokeh is about the same as the 35mm 1.8.

This will be the main lens I keep on my D800 camera.
I like the natural/normal perspective
I like the F1.4 speed
Razor sharp edge to edge
What is not to like, and priced well.

I love this lens. Using it on a D300. My only problem? Figuring out how to focus at f1.4! But I'll get there :)

LOVE this lens. I waited over 6 months to order this lens from B&H and I wasn't disappointed. It arrived fast, and safely. This lens is fast and delivers sharp and accurate images. I use it on a D700 and am extremely happy with it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
I use this lens for getting ready shots in a room that has alot going on. This lens allows me to use f1.4 to blur out any distracting elements in the background. I would highly recommend this lens to anyone who needs a very shallow dof and sharpness in their images. I am using this lens on both my D3s and D4 and after dialing in the AF Fine tune is sharp as a tack.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
I owned both the 1.8 and 1.4...love them both. Happy I upgraded to the 1.4. It does feel a bit more solid. I agree with slow auto focus, but only in low light situations. It's fast when there is plenty of light around. Sharp Lens, great bokah! this will attached to my camera 90% of the time. great color and contrast as well!

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
This lens has sharp focus and amazing bokeh. It is my go-to lens for portraiture. Lightweight and compact but carries a professional punch. I love it. If I could only have one lens, it would be this one. I use a d700 and shoot in primarily natural light.

Just bought this lens and used it in a photo shot today. Couldn´t be happier. Great lens for my D7000 especially for portraits. Excellent in low light. Not at all heavy I also own a 18-200mm and both are wonderful. This lens works perfectly. I am very pleased with the results!

This lens is great for the money. I've been taking photos of everything from children to bands. It's great for low lighting. The auto focus is spot on and the depth of field I get from this lens gives me more of the "film" look I am looking for. I would recommend this lens to anyone.

First, B&H your customer service ROCKS! I love this lens. I thought I love my 35 1.8...but the 50 1.4 blows it out of the water. Such great color right out of the camera. Great bokeh, sharp and fast.

My previous 50 1.4 I owned for 12 years, one of my favorites. The center for shots with this lens are definitely crisper. Very happy with the replacement.
