The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Lens is a standard lens with an ultra-bright f/1.4 aperture, which allows for fast, accurate shooting with available light. It is also the excellent choice for when a shallow depth of field is desired. An ideal portrait lens when used on a Nikon DX-format digital SLR, it approximates the angle of view similar to that of a 75mm lens on a Nikon FX-format digital SLR or a 35mm film camera.
The optical design of this lens minimizes flare and chromatic aberration. The SWM (Silent Wave Motor) feature ensures fast and quiet focusing action, and the nine-blade rounded diaphragm makes out-of-focus elements blend smoothly to produce natural-looking, harmonious backgrounds.
An ideal prime lens, perfect for full-length portraits, travel photography or any type of available-light shooting.
Note: G-type Nikkor lenses have no aperture control ring and are intended for use on Nikon D-SLRs that allow the lens aperture to be adjusted via the camera's command dial.

This is going to be the primary lens I'll keep on my camera for portraits and street photography for numerous reasons
1. It's small and light, hence very easy to carry
2. The wide open aperture (as low as 1.4) makes it ideal for low light photography without needing a flash
3. The shallow depth of field makes it ideal for portraits and opens up a whole range of interesting bokeh and blurred background photographs
4. Sturdy construction and a great lens for the price

I guess I got this from the very first batch received by B&H. I pre-ordered it and was really looking forward to spending the holidays taking portraits of the family and friends. From the first shots, it was clear (or not so clear) that something was not right. All of the shots seemed to have a soft focus and the colors were not at all saturated. I set up a shot with a test pattern and the camera (D80) mounted on a tripod. I took dozens of shots using both manual and auto focus. Manually, I was able to consistently get very sharp focus, even seeing the dust on the test pattern. As soon as I switched to auto-focus, it became obvious that something was out of calibration. Each shot was consistently significantly out of focus. I received a new Nikon 105mm f/2 dc lens at the same time as the 50mm. That lens is amazing in every way. I have taken about 1000 shots with it and it delivers striking performance. It passed the same tests I subjected the 50mm to with flying colors as did 2 other Nikon lenses.I will return this first 50mm to B&H and hope the replacement is better. It looks like I might need to wait a while, however, as they are out of stock again.

We sold one of our cameras along with our old nikkor 50mm 1.8 and replaced it with this f/1.4 version. So far its been fast and the images look sharp. A must have for portraits & low light conditions.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
Purchased this lens because it was recommended by a professional photographer for portrait shots. Large aperture gives great DOF effects. Maybe a bit long FL for non-full frame DLSRs to shoot groups indoors.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
Bought this lens as an upgrade to the 50mm 1.8 which I was already very happy with, but wanted even more flexibility in low light. Using it on my D7000.
Very happy with the photos I am getting with this lens. In use it focuses quickly and quietly. It's nice and sharp although just a little less when wide open at 1.4, but still very acceptable for my purposes.
This will definitely be a lens I will use a lot.
Have read a couple of comments about the quality of the bokeh not being quite as nice as some other comparable lens but I can't complain at all about it. Playing around specifically to maximise bokeh I have got some great shots with it and have been very happy with this aspect.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
I just bought this lens and have taken a few shots, but so far I am very happy with it. The f1.4 works great in low light conditions although the autofocus sims a litlle bit slow compared to my other lenses. It is the first non-zoom lens I bought and it really pushes you to think about the framing and composition--one of the reasons I bought it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
So much fun! This lens is wonderful. I was hooked at f1.4. Love the creamy background, the low light performance, and the quick autofocus. I thought it might be a challenge to get correct focus, but after just 10 minutes of playing with it, I got the hang of it. Can't say enough how easy it was to start taking wonderful head shots.

The GAPEING Aperture in this lens has freed me from flash photography! It was exactly what I needed and wanted.
It is very tight when attaching/detaching (as other reviews have stated.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
I'm upgrading from a 50mm 1.8d. I mainly take portraits so using this on my d7000 is almost like having a 85mm on a full frame. I absolutely love how the Bokeh looks so much creamier and how the pictures come out contrasty. I am still getting to know the lens better. Shooting wide open does have the heavenly look...a little soft. Still have to go out on a serious photoshoot with this but I am exteremely happy with this lens. Huge upgrade for an amateur photographer.

On Christmas day I took shots of my 17 month old Great-grandson inside a dim room and the 50mm 1.4 Nikkor worked great. I had to keep on the move because he is very active. Focus was quick and accurate. A great lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Autofocus Lens:
I really like the quality of this lens and the creativity it affords. It makes a great portrait lens with excellent picture quality and the f 1.4 lens speed provides a lot of creative potential (low light situations and depth of field control). I was tempted to try the 85mm f1.4 but found it's length to limiting for many situations and the price way too steep for my limited applications.
