The 4TB 4big Quadra External Hard Drive RAID Array from LaCie is an external 4-disk array that delivers a fail-safe storage solution. As configured, the array offers an impressive 4TB of storage spread across four drives, all of which are hot swappable.
The array features a quad interface which allows it to be connected via eSATA, FireWire-800, FireWire-400, or USB 2.0. It is capable of burst transfer rates of up to 230MB/sec when connected via eSATA. The array can be configured in a variety of schemata, including RAID 0 and RAID 5. These features and more make the array a great solution for your large data storage needs.

Comments about LaCie 4TB 4big Quadra External Hard Drive RAID Array:
So far so good. I've been using this mammoth drive for about three weeks now and it appears to be totally reliable and exactly what I need. Despite some of the reviews elsewhere, this hard drive is quiet and does not get overheated. I'm currently using it as a means of back-up for all my scanned negatives and digital RAW files. It looks like this is the best thing on the market now in the way of 4TB hard drives. Giving it a 4/5 because I haven't used it extensively yet.

This is a great RAID 5 unit. Careful as when you configure 4TB for RAID 5, it becomes 3TB.

Comments about LaCie 4TB 4big Quadra External Hard Drive RAID Array:
Use the product to hold a library of songs and movies. The drive is really quick when attached to the eSATA on my Mac Pro. It has 4GB of storage so it has a lot of space for my data. Has user replaceable drive in case something happens to one of the 4 originally shipped with the product. I use RAID 0 for the best speed but the drive also offers numerous other RAID options for security. I does have a fairly large footprint but it is quite and attractive. The only thing I don't like about it is the big blue light on the front of the drive. However, I did know about it when I bought it so I can not blame LaCie. If it could be turned off the drive would be almost perfect.

Comments about LaCie 4TB 4big Quadra External Hard Drive RAID Array:
Lacie makes great products. Have 3 of their drives at work and 2 at home. Have never had any problems with any of them.
This particular drive is a little noisier than any of the other drives I own, but is to be expected considering its storage capacity is greater. Really beautiful, clean design. Great features.

Comments about LaCie 4TB 4big Quadra External Hard Drive RAID Array:
This is used at home as backup and auxiliary storage for two Macs (2.4GHz 20" iMac 750GB; 2.33 GHz 15" MacBook Pro 200GB). Have been using it for three weeks with no problems.
I configured it as RAID 5 for 3TB of usable space with single-drive failure protection. I created 8 partitions for various purposes, using some for bootable clone backups, some for Time Machine, and others for offline storage (mostly DV projects, etc.).
Under RAID 5, one expects somewhat slower write speeds since parity must be written. On a full SuperDuper clone from MacBook Pro using FW 800, I routinely get 24 MB/sec AVERAGE over a full 130GB backup, which might even be limited by the laptop speed. I have seen burst speeds of up to 60MB/sec over FW800. In any case, it's certainly quite fast for writing to a consumer level RAID 5 array.
Can't really comment on reliability on a new product that is only in service for 3 weeks, but it certainly appears to be solidly constructed and it runs cool. I have had two other LaCie external drives for several years with no problems.
Since I only use it with two Macs, I simply use both of the two FIrewire 800 ports with long cables, one of which is normally connected to the iMac, and the other is routed to where I normally park the laptop, but is left unconnected. (Note: you can only use one of the interfaces at a time to a computer - there are two FW 800 ports so you can daisy-chain several FW 800 drives, but only one end of the chain can be connected to a computer port at one time.) When I want to backup the laptop, I unmount the drives form the iMac desktop and unplug the cable, then plug the other cable into the MacBook Pro. If one wanted to do this with more than two machines, I suppose the networked version (see the similar LaCie "5big" product) might be more practical - but I would rather have the FireWire 800 speed and the ability to boot from a partition, which you can't do with the networked drive (as far as I know). Also, I'm not sure whether the networked 5big would work with TIme Machine - they don't say.
I only give it 4 stars instead of 5, because this appears to be exactly the same chassis as the "5big" but you can only put 4 drives in it. The 5th slot is blocked. What were they thinking? If you had all 5 slots filled with 1TB drives you could get 4TB of usable space in a RAID 5 config.
