The Xtreme N Dual Band Gigabit Router from D-Link is a wireless Internet router, which allows multiple computers on your network to access the Internet through a single cable or DSL modem. It supports the 802.11n wireless protocol, and also features 4 Ethernet ports for wired connectivity.
The Xtreme N is capable of transmitting data on either the 2.4GHz or 5GHz spectrum. Most Wi-Fi use the 2.4GHz spectrum, by utilizing the 5GHz band the router can transmit data with less interference. An integrated firewall protects connected computers from malicious attacks from computers on the Internet. It supports wireless encryption, ensuring that neighbors cannot access your wireless network.

I live in a 3 story limestone townhouse in Brooklyn. The device is kept in a front room on the 2nd story. I have both 2 and 5 gig set up.
With my previous router and repeater, the kitchen on the 1st story at the back of the house was unreachable with just the router and unreliable with the repeater, as it was sensitive to the 5 gig phone signal, and the throughput seemed to suffer when it did work.
The main objective in buying the D-Link Xtreme N Dual Band was to overcome these three problems with only one device.
The reviews that I could find and collate largely said that, in this price range, this was the device.
So far, after a month of operation, all has worked as advertised, correspondingly reviewed. I am very satisfied with the product.
The one thing I would say is that the documentation was nearly useless. This is particularly so if you have a Mac, as I do. It is a good thing that I have a technical background the helps me know when an instruction is wrong or misleading or incomplete. It is hard to imagine a very non-technical person with a Mac having an easy time.

I got less range than with my old DL-624. My wireless computers could not access the supposed better security using WPA. D-Link support could not save the day. I think the clever design and regulations to gain obsolescence and sell more routers has led to complications that go far beyond the scope of simple communications with adequate security. They have created a monster. D-Link and Netgear share common problems. Linksys by Cisco is easier to use but their design is also seriously flawed. I'll continue to use my old DL-624. The designed obsolescence has been unable to disable it.

This was a complete waste of time. After 4 hours and 45 minutes of attempting to get this router working I had to give up. I spoke with tech support for over an hour and they couldn't help at all. Maybe if the tech support person could speak intelligible English things may have been different. An attempt using the installation CD failed. An attempt to go through the DLink install site failed. This item is being returned to the store.

This router was recommended by my father, who incidentally works for a competing product. TN just got Fiber Optics and only certain routers push that much GB out wirelessly. It helps that the router is white and blends into the white walls! Definitely would recommend this!
Only issue is that the set-up disk only works for a PC so you have to manually do it yourself.

I had difficulty setting up the router and SharePort Utility so I called the tech support number. Call was answered promptly, the techs knew what they were talking about and helped me through the setup.
I am happy with the product and would recommend it to others.

I ordered this model to replace a 7 y/o Linksys 54g router at the recommendation of the IT guy at work. He also suggested flashing the firmware with a 3rd party open source firmware (forget the name) which opens up new possibilities. I haven't had much time to fool with it yet but plan to attach a NAS device to it to record surveillance video of the sketchy people that sometimes show up behind our house. Very easy setup, much better documentation than any Linksys product I've ever purchased. Compatible with both PC desktops and laptops at home and iPad. No complaints yet...

Comments about D-Link Xtreme N Dual Band Gigabit Router:
I had a Linksys E3000 wireless router and it was a pain to setup and would drop connections all the time, computers wouldn't show up on the network at times. I had always had Linksys products but since Cisco bought them the products are not the same. D-link is the way to go now I have a D-Link DNS-321 w/3gb storage hooked up to the network we store all our pictures, Music and Movies there, plus it holds everyone's computer back up. The D-Link DIR-825 wireless Gigabit router was easy to setup and has lots of features to manage your network. My kids don't complain about drop connections or speed anymore it connects to the Ipad, Ipod, wii, Xbox, Samsung Blue Ray player w/internet TV & Netflix (By By TimeWarner) and it's backwards compatible with my old wireless laptops. I had a D-link DSG-2208 8-port gigabit switch in my basement for my wired computers and for the first time all computers with gigabit network cards can transfer files @1000Mbps. The Linksys E3000 wireless gigabit router wouldn't do that and I have never had good luck with any Netgear products. I have replaced all my Linksys products with D-link and couldn't be happier. B&H has never let me down they are one of the first places I check. They have great prices [...] keep up the good work.

Comments about D-Link Xtreme N Dual Band Gigabit Router:
Our old router started working only intermittently and we diagnosed the problem as the router, not the modem.
After reading a variety of reviews, we bought this router to help with faster and wider access to wireless internet at home. Working for an ad agency on digital/online mktg from home, being able to send large files while operating 2 laptops, 2 TiVos access, and more and more use of streaming video online, it was important that this router work well, but also consistently.
It has really done the trick. Contrary to prior reviews, I found set-up very easy, but you do need to have direct access to the modem for the 1st set-up. I think there was a way around this, but not sure.

It has all what I need, 802.11 b/g/n, simultaneous dual band, USB device sharing, gigabit, security, guest mode. Problem free so far, except the D-Link SharePort software doesn't support "fast user switching". To my surprise, though, the user session that failed to run SharePort can still print.
