Nikon's AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens is a welcome addition to the Nikon DX-format DSLR systems, and an ideal counterpart to the D90 DSLR. This versatile optic offers much of the benefits of the enormously-popular 18-200mm VR lens but in a lighter, smaller body that takes a smaller filter as well.
The AF-S Silent Wave Motor in the 18-105mm VR yields speedy, silent, on-the-money AF performance with full time manual focus override. In particular, the AF-S motor keeps up with skittish, erratic subjects that overwhelm normal camera-driven-motor AF systems. You'll get more 'keeper' images of those fast-moving animals, athletes, children, vehicles and the like.
Along with the SWM (Silent Wave Motor), the 18-105mm benefits from the VR Image Stabilizer built into the lens, which will give you the ability to handhold the camera at shutter speeds up to three stops slower than would otherwise normally be possible. Always a benefit to a handheld pic, this is of particular usefulness whenever you're photographing slow-moving subjects in low light. The benefit of in-lens stabilization is seen in the viewfinder, making composing and capturing the image easier as well.
Note: DX lenses are NOT recommended for use with "full-frame" FX digital or 35mm film SLR cameras.
Note! White Box merchandise comes supplied in a plain white box, instead of the manufacturer's colorful packaging. It still includes all the manufacturer's accessories.

I have been using this lens for over a year now and feel qualified to recommend it to just about any one. This is a very sharp lens if you understand its limitations. The focal range is incredibly useful (28-157 35mm equiv)with VR and as a result I often use it for events, weddings, portraits and landscapes along side a fast prime on my d700. this lens replaces my 24-70 and 70-200 for any occasion that I don't need 2.8!
this is what DX was made for! you can get better image quality but to replicate this focal range its 10 times the price and weight.
weaknesses:
There is strong vignetting in the corners wide open at the extremes (18 and 105mm) but easy to fix in pp or just stop down a little and it goes away.
this is a plastic lens if you want build quality and weather sealing look elsewhere.
But If you need small, light and unobtrusive in this focal range (who doesn't)this is your lens
I tried Nikons 18-200 and hated it, at half the size, weight, and cost this lens blows it out of the water.

These lens is a good "walk around lens". I bought as my go to lens for my D300 for family outings. Works well outdoors. It really has trouble focusing in low-light. It seems the longer I use when shooting, the harder time it has auto focusing. There's also the issue of chromatic aberration that I have had to correct.
I have used the VR feature about a hand full of times. I can notice the difference. So I would say that feature works, but I don't rely on it.

I keep the lens on my Nikon D200 all the time. I do have a 70 to 300mm that I use from time to time for telephoto work. Grest lens, sharp and clear. It is a little slow on focus but only milasecond.

This lense has quickly become my everyday workhorse.......had been using an 18-200mm for everyday, but the 18-105mm is lighter and still has enough length. Do not go anywhere to shoot without it.

I broke my 18-135kid that came with the D80, and I already have a 70-300. This lens is a perfect fit for candids and wide group shots that I can't get with the other. It is fast on the autofocus and pretty quiet.

The day I got the lens there were the most amazing thungerstorms brewing all around my place. With my other lenses I hadn't been able to tell the entire story of the place I live. This lens helped me do that instantly.
It's weight is a little bit of a problem if you were to carry it all day. But that said I still got my shots and the evening news put them on the air.

Awesome quality shots, fits the d5100 very nicely. Zoom is a nice upgrade from the stock 18-55 lens. Haven't used it too extensively yet but have been highly impressed by its picture quality and versatility with the shots I have taken.

Comments about Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Autofocus Lens (White Box):
This lens surprised me as I did not expect it to perform as well as the 18-55mm in that same focal range. At 18mm the wide angle capabilities are same as the 18-55 although the eye piece perspective is not the same. The 18-55mm has what looks like a wide screen format 16:9 where the 18-105mm looked more like 4:3. It is still early days and I keep discovering more clever design capabilities that I didn't expect. Sometimes the shutter speed is slower, not sure why. This is noticeable if you take a photo of a plasma/TV screen at less then 4 meters. I didn't realise that "White box" items don't come with manuals. My only disappointment.

I bought this lens to replace the 18-55 kit lens that came with my D5100. It does a great job and is the perfect walk around lens. It is sharp, the colors are perfect with no fringing and is lightweight for me. What more can one ask.

I love this lens. It is not so big and bulky so that you don't mind taking your camera when it's just a fun day out and dragging your camera wouldn't normally be on the list. It gives you lots of options for your distances and produces really nice crisp images. Can't really think of anything that I don't like about this lens.

Most of my pictures are taken inside a building. 18-55 lens too short - 55-200 too long. 18-105 lens that I ordered, just right. It works well with a speed lite or the iso can be cranked up and used without a flash. VR comes in handy in these cases.
My only regret is waiting as long as I did before ordering.

I use this product for portraits and still life. I love the range on the 18-105 and with this attached to my D300s, the picture are amazing. For such a small price, this lens packs a huge punch.

I use this lens as an everyday lens for both indoor and outdoor shooting. It is very versatile and shoots crystal clear high quality pictures under a variety of light conditions. The VR comes in very handy especially when you need high speed shots. It replaced the standard lens that came with the D-60 and is much more versatile at a very good value.
I highly recommend it.

I received this lense on a Tuesday and by Thursday was sold on it. It gives me all the sharpness I was looking for and a nice length that reaches out farther than the 18-55mm kit lense. I am cautious due to the plastic fitting but I believe it is a value add to my lens compliment. Thumb definitely up for now.

Obviously, this isn't a lens you would want to use in a low light situation. For the price you pay, its a great lens for most situations. Images are sharp and it focuses fast.

I bought this lens to replace the 18-70 that originally came with my Nikon D40X. After a couple years, the mounting ring simply came apart. This is a fantastic replacement as it (1) feels much more sturdy. It is a plastic mount, same as my other lens, but doesn't feel as flimsy, and (2) the extra 70-105 (beyond the 18-70 that I was used to) adds a ton of versatility that I didn't have before.
My plan is to upgrade the Nikon D40X to a 3100 and add a more versatile camera body to this very versatile lens.

I use this lens on the beach to get shots of my dog playing in the ocean, to snap pictures of nice beach houses for my "someday" files or to get any other outdoor shots.
