Comments about 16x9 Inc. 169-HD75XA-EX Aspheric Wide Converter:
I switched to this wide converter from the Sony OEM 0.8x version because I needed to use a mattebox. This lens works great for that purpose, but surprisingly, the optics don't seem to be nearly as good as the $450 Sony converter. There is noticeable edge softness, especially in the corners, but also in the left and right sides of frame (throughout most of the zoom range). I've even had producers complain that the camera was "out of focus" because the soft area was over the actor/talent. Thinking my lens may have been defective, I tried 2 others from 16x9 and they had the same issues. I wound up keeping this lens because I use a MB with filters so often, but I have to be constantly aware of where the soft areas are on the lens when I'm framing. The center is sharp and the lens is otherwise built well. Considering its limitations, I'm not sure if I'd recommend it, but if you have to use a mattebox, it's not THAT bad.
