Comments about Nero 9 Ultra Edition CD/DVD Burning Software for Windows:

I have been using Nero since version 6 (7 and 8). I was very happy with version 8. I used it primarly to burn CDs (audio and data), DVDs (video and data), and BlueRay (video and data), and to rip CDs to mp3 and other formats. Paid and Downloaded the 9 upgrade with out reading reviews becuase I was always pleased with new fetaures, speed, and ease of use of previous upgrades. Unfortunately 9 turns out to be actually less than 8? Here is my experience so far. Dell I7, Vista Ultimate, 8gb system.

Install - Indeed very slow (probably at least 30 Minutes) also did upgrade to latest version which went faster ( perhaps 10 minutes). Install went smoothly, I did not remove version 8, and told the installer to install version 9 to a folder "Nero 9".

Version 8 - Still seems to work fine, ripped some disks, ran show time and waver editor, burned a CD. Showtime 4 that comes with 8 does not play blueray.

Version 9 - Show time: still does not play blueray, the interface is completely reworked, though seems to have the same functionality. Wave Editor: Looks exactly the same as Nero 8, have not found any extra or missing features yet. Other Apps: I have not tried all the other apps yet, the only new one I can see is the side bar TV player which I have yet to installed in the side bar. Nero Burning ROM: Burned some CDs and DVDs with no problem (have not yet tried BlueRay burning, that is a little expensive just for a test). Burn times were the same as far as I can tell. Interface looks pretty much the same, one or two extra features, like save a data track (not sure what that is yet). One notable exception is that the Database menu item is gone, and here is where 9 becomes less than 8.

          CD Ripping Major Failure!

Nero 9 makes major changes in how CDs are ripped, and provides far less functionality than Nero 8 (or at least I have not yet found the functionality). 1) Nero 9 uses Gracenote to manage CD title and track names instaead of its own local and internet Database. I have not been able to get Gracenote to work. Tried 5 CDs, Nero 9 could not find the disk title or track names for any. Nero 8 had no problems doing so. 2) The ripping options are greatly reduced. Nero 8 provides 7 file formats: aif, Lame mp3, Pro mp3, wma, nero mp4, wav, and ogg. In the past for one reason or another I have had the need to use all these formats, excpet the mp4. Nero 9 provides 4: Nero mp4, pro MP3, mp3, and wav. Nero 8 also provide a wide range of options under these various formats, such as quality, speed, and VBR for mp3 (variable Bit rate) which is now supported by ipod/itouch and can reduce a file size sometimes by half. You could also boast or reduce volume, choose among a number of bit rates and frequencies, get rid of silience, adjust padding, and create naming patterns for output files. Nero 9 provides very little of these. The quality options are gone the only option is one of the 4 file formats and bit rate. One can select from several preconfigured file patterns, custom is no longer an option. Which is a pain becuase disk1 disk2 is not one of these.

For serious CD ripping, Nero 9 is a LOT less than Nero 8. Thank goodness 8 is still working.

To be honest I feel a little ripped off (pun intended). This is the last Nero upgrade I purchase until ver 8 can not do something I need done. Then I may finally evaluate all the other products on the markets and make a switch.
