Comments about Dynalite RK10-1222 Road Series 1000Ws Kit (120VAC):
I work on location, usually without an assistant, and so the amount of gear I an lug around, and more importantly, it's weight is very important. I used to drag a pair of White Lightning monolights and accessories, (stands, umbrellas, softbox) and bought the Dynalite kit to ease my burden. It has, and my old monolights were sold off to someone else a week later. No regrets.
The powerpack's strong points are as follows;
1. Small size and weight.
2. Two channels that can be combined or isolated.
3. When isolated, the individual channels can have their outputs adjusted separately, without affecting the other. Few, if any power packs aside from Dynalite will allow this.
4. Fast recycling time. Beeps when ready.
5. An all-channel variator with a two stop range in 1/5th stop increments. Great for digital.
6. The convection cooled heads are very light and assuming softboxes aren't used, can be safely placed on top of Manfrotto 001B stands, which are supplied.
7. The kit comes with a great quality Tenba case.
The negatives? There aren't many, but there are a couple nonetheless.
1. The 1015 heads come with a long cable permanently attached to it rather than a pigtail and detachable cable on some other heads. It therefore takes more room to pack the head and cable in the bag, eliminating any possibility of fitting a 3rd head into the bag, should the kit be expanded.
2. The cable is connected to the head in such a location that it can interfere with the operation of the head's tilt-locking handle. It should have been positioned on the opposite side of the flash head.
3. The reflector with it's tube and modeling light can be pulled out of the housing quite easily and care must therefore be taken not to pull it out when removing certain accessories such as the grid holder.
So far, I've used this kit for glamour/pinups, portraits, and product photos, adding only a grid adapter to allow the used of standard 7" grids. It's met all my needs in these situations, though I plan to add a 3rd head down the road. It's very much lightend my load and facilitated my task management on-location. I love it.
