Nice image in a 720p plasma TV, and plays a Ton of HD and FullHD video formats. I was thinking about a HTPC, but this little box does about 90% of the job and costs much less.
If you don't have a receiver, beware: WD TV can't decode DTS sound for itself. Also, it don't handle well with some of the larger .mkv files (10GB or more).
It has some minor issues, like the bad subtitle sinc in .srt files and don't show menus in DVDs ISOs. But more firmware updates (there's two until now) can fix them.

We purchased a WDTV media player last month. Here are the problems we encountered with the product:
***Cannot support RM/RMVB (real media video formats)
***External hard drive does not power down when device is off
***Cannot watch higher bit rate 1080p MKV files due to screen artifacting and other visual problems. I think it has a problem with 29fps @1080p.
***The lack of a network connection drastically reduces the convenience by forcing you to disconnect your USB hard drive to copy stuff onto it and reconnect.
***WDTV does not even include a HDMI cable, which itself is worth at least $10 (or maybe $50, depending on where you buy it from.)
***Slow remote control response

Comments about Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player:
I've been using it to listen to music view pictures and watch video on the standard TV. It has solved my entertainment needs perfectly. The transfer of files with the help of an external hard drive has been easy. It also works with files stored on a standard flash drive. I've been impressed with the product.

I purchased this product two weeks ago. I just plugged in my WD passport to it and able to detected all the movies with different format. Video quality is same as how it was stored in the Harddrive. It worked as how it is supposed to work. Everyone must buy this and should replace their CD/DVD players.

Comments about Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player:
I use the WD TV Media Player at home to watch and listen to all the media content which I would normally have had to watch on my computer. This product was very easy to set up. Just hooked it to one of the video\audio inputs on my TV and started watching. I have an external USB drive hooked to the WD unit, no problems. I really like the menus, they are easy to navigate and give all the information needed to choose what to watch or listen to. The only problem I have had is with one HD movie in MKV format. The video is fine but the audio is not recognized (no audio). I updated to the latest firmware but this did not help. I will inform WD though their website to see if they will include this codec on their next firmware upgrade. This is the only problem I have had. I gave this product 5 stars and would recommend this to all who want a product like this. Thanks B&H for the low price [...]

I bought this to display my HD home videos and images on my TV. It works fine.
If you are new to HD... You can't display your HD home videos and images on an HD TV using DVD technology. To display HD, you can either attach a computer to the TV, use a blu-ray recorder or get one of these little guys.
It's not rocket science, but you need to know a little bit about digital video and image files to get the most from it. The resources to learn are online.

Comments about Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player:
Great addition to my home theater set up. Digital storage is so inexpensive that I ripped most of the movies that I have to straight mkv files (no compression) and packed the dvds into storage boxes. Awesome picture with playback, great browsing feature and no wall space taken up by racks of dvds. This is a pretty intuitive piece of equipment, but if you need help I would suggest the wdtvforums (just google it). I love it and would definitely purchase again without hesitation. Also works great with the harmony 360 remote.

Comments about Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player:
After your kid destroys a few DVDs, you decide to look into backing up those things. Before this device, I would rip the DVD to the hard drive, then attempt to record back to a blank DVD. Despite using good software, you would invariably end up with lots of coasters. Enter the WD HD media player. Now I rip those DVDs to a portable drive, connect to the WD HD, and viola, movie access. I do have to say that you need to do a little folder and file manipulation to get the WD HD to display the names and images of the movies if you are keeping the ripped DVD in the VOB format. VOB works, so I would rather have to throw a Jpeg of the DVD cover in the Video_TS folder than convert the VOB files to AVI. But it works great, and I even use the HDMI and toslink optical connection to my stereo. Good product and portable.

Straight forward to use... Small remote but works fairly well. Do yourself a favor goto [@]and sign-up. Really good information if you have a question. Helped me out to update the firmware.Playback video quality is GREAT hands down. 1080P via HDMI direct with DTS audio fed to my receiver via an optical cable, shakes the house with a great picture!

I must admit a dislike for I Tunes and thus a dislike of Apple TV. Upon an internet search for all other possibilities of playing digitized videos ( legal ones ) on my HD TV I stumbled upon this device. Others have said it is slow but I have not found that to be the case. I connected a 1TB My Book to it and it reads the folders lickety split. Highly recommended as a replacement or instead of Apple TV. The price only makes it better - about 1/3 the price of Apple TV.

Comments about Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player:
The reason I bought this is probably a little different than most. I'm in a band called THE NEW LAW and we do video behind us on stage when we play. We got tired of playing video from our laptops, so we bought this device and made our own videos in the studio, recorded them, and then put them on a memory stick.
At the show we plug this into our projector and select play. Easiest option out there. So convenient, and it's highly portable :)
4 stars because I wish the remote wasn't required. I'm afraid I'll lose it while on tour. Other than that, it's perfect.
