To anyone interested in using Nikon's CLS system, this video is a must! Bob Krist goes over the basic lighting system in the studio and progressively explains simple to semi advanced lighting scenarios using the different Nikon speedlights. He also covers their function and use in the same segment.
The 2nd segment only gets better when he teams up with Joe McNally who applies the same principles of lighting on various real location shoots to produce amazing shots over and over..... Awesome!!!

This is probably a good intermediate lighting tutorial. This information is free from a lot of different sources. I bought the last one, [$]and fell for it. I bought enough Nikon flash equipment to realize that it didn't have enough power for quality work. Like all the Nikon School stuff, it's clear an inspiring. McNally and Krist are skilled photographers, at the top of their game. They have to be to make this stuff work. I would guess that they had more than 12 flash units and a full time battery man. This latest isthe best so far (at [$]). They should be giving it away as advertising. I hope you can get past the canned music.

I saw the ad for it when it was released. I wanted it , but was not available in the local stores.
Bob Krist explains how the flashes works in the first hour. The second hour McNally joins in and they visit a ballet school and a fishing harbor. They show how to improve the photo first with one flash, but quickly use more and more flashes. In the last photo they use 12 flashes!
They quickly get to much equipment that the average photographer prepare to spend on equipment and to carry along. It is interesting to see how they work, though. It is well made. I miss the fun cut away parts that I had seen on the Internet before, that made me believe it was fun to watch as well.

A great break down of how to balance out light. Even though many of the demonstrations are done in a studio environment, the principles can be used anywhere. Great for anyone wanting to perfect or experiment with flash & lighting effects.

Comments about Nikon DVD: Hands on Guide to Creative Lighting:
This DVD gives some good basic information about lighting and shows how folks with unlimited budget can use Nikon CLS system. The last shot described in this infomercial used 12 expensive Nikon flashes. It is not useless, I learned some ideas from it, but I don't think it was worth paying for it full price.

Comments about Nikon DVD: Hands on Guide to Creative Lighting:
This video is for both beginner and professional. The beginner will learn about light and the different effects one can get when changing the shape of light while the professional will gain great insight when shooting on locations from one of the best in the business, Joe McNally, who is a pleasure to watch work. But I will mention that a large part of the video is a commercial for the Nikon Creative Lighting System. I knew that going into it though.

Exceptional overview of Nikon Speedlights, from basic to really, really advanced. This DVD opened up possibilities I had never dreamed of. There is a sales pitch within, but not objectionable.

Comments about Nikon DVD: Hands on Guide to Creative Lighting:
This is an excellent video and value for those interested in using the Nikon Creative Lighting System. While this video includes some lighting basics it also provides in the field examples of how to set up and use the SB-600, SB-800, and SB-900 flashes. The video is high quality and very interesting to watch. There are sections on basic lighting, the Nikon Creative Lighing System and three "in the field" shoots demonstrating how to use remote flash. Each section's menu is well divided allowing you to easily return to a particular segment. Well done Nikon.

Comments about Nikon DVD: Hands on Guide to Creative Lighting:
I spent a recent rainy Sunday watching A Hands-on Guide to Creative Lighting. I left the 2 hour, 34 minute session wishing I had devoted the time sooner. It is a must for any photographer who takes his or her art form seriously.
Subject and light beat at the heart of every great image. The serious picture maker cannot gather enough knowledge about both. Prior to the video, my light knowledge was severely lacking.
Host Bob Krist begins with a comprehensive look at lighting fundamentals and techniques: direction, color, quality, to mention a few. Blessed with not only a gifted photographic eye, Krist possesses a poet’s command of the language. The time spent in the studio is informative. This was knowledge I needed.
Then the fun began. Joined by Joe McNally, in my opinion one of our age’s greats, Krist ventures into the field. With stops at a ballet school, a pastoral wedding venue and the dock of a commercial fishing venture, they apply the lessons discussed in the studio to overcome challenges we all met in our daily picture making. One difference, however. They leave the scene with exquisite photographs. The viewer cannot help but be inspired.
When they are done you will have one problem: – and it is a big one – figuring out how to pay for all new equipment you will want.

It made the system easy to understand. You have to pay close attention to get everything but it is very good from basic to advanced. I think they could sell more equipment if they cut the price of the disc so more people could get interested in CLS.

Comments about Nikon DVD: Hands on Guide to Creative Lighting:
I found this Hands on Guide DVD is an excellent guide for medium to advanced photographers/lighting students who can to start shoot straight away through working through the first part of the DVD. The second part with Joe McNally was ok/average. I thought that he didn't really guide the viewer to explore in depth his setup shots.Too much of a sales pitch for Nikon flashes ie SB900 and gear.[...]

Comments about Nikon DVD: Hands on Guide to Creative Lighting:
This DVD gives outstanding advice on the use of Nikon SB series flashes using the Creative Lighting System. The intricacies of this system are not always immediately obvious from the supplied manuals. However, this DVD makes the use of this system, especially on location, very straightforward and useful. I recommend this DVD to those who are learning lighting or want to know how to use the SB series of lights most effectively.
