Panasonic's DMW-FL220 External Flash is a compact flash unit that attaches to your camera's accessory shoe, allowing a broader range of coverage than built-in flashes. It has an Auto TTL Mode which automatically sets the flash's Guide Number, and a Manual Mode which delivers a Guide Number of 22 at 24mm (35mm equivalent). This tiny flash unit (only four inches tall) will deliver approximately 140 flashes when powered by two fresh AA Alkaline batteries or 230 flashes on fully charged NiMH batteries (not included). I recently purchased this flash to use with my LX3 and GF1. Both cameras are outstanding, but the built-in flash units are fairly weak. The DMW-FL220 solved my problem. I am now able to get solid flash performance in large halls and rooms, which was impossible using the built-in flash for each camera.
The DMW-FL220 is very thin and light. It will certainly be in keeping with the minimalist design of the LX3 and GF1. This flash unit will easily fit in the pocket of your pants - even blue jeans. It also comes with an excellent soft case/pouch.
My only complaints, though minor, are the fact the flash does not have a tilting head, so you cannot get any bounce. Also, the flash shoe is plastic. Of course, for the price, it would be unreasonable to expect more. In reality, this flash is simply designed for adding much more range (higher GN) than the built-in flash. For this purpose, it is excellent and a must have addition to LX3, GF1 or other compatible compact camera models.

I have not or will not use this item extensively but the testing out of this item seems to prove its worth. I have no issues with this purchase, which I will have on hand should the need arise.

Comments about Panasonic DMW-FL220 External Flash:
I started using this compared to my panasonic FL400 becasue it recycles faster and is powerful enough for my sue already. However, there are times when the flash does not adjust the output and it becomes too white.
Having said that, I will continue using this becasue it is lighter and aonly uses 2AA batteries.

Comments about Panasonic DMW-FL220 External Flash:
Easy to carry and easy to use.
Compact size matches my small micro 4/3 camera(Lumix GF1).
Great for indoor party shots.
If you need bounce capability, you should go for higher G/N.

Comments about Panasonic DMW-FL220 External Flash:
This is a good quality basic flash and it is certainly a big improvement over the built in unit. For simple flash photography it will do the job just fine. However considering the sophistication of the LX 3 it is a real step down. No bounce or controls and it's expensive for the limited control. But you are locked into the system.

Comments about Panasonic DMW-FL220 External Flash:
I ordered this flash unit to augment the built-in flash on my new Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2 digitial camera. The built-in flash is fine for close-ups, but I needed wider coverage to illuminate larger groups or spaces. This little flash unit works great, and it compliments and enhances the features on my Lumix GF2. The quality of construction is also exceptional.

Comments about Panasonic DMW-FL220 External Flash:
This flash makes a great addition to the LX5 or probably any other Lumix camera in the compact size lineup. It's a good value for what B&H sell it for but I wouldn't say that if paying what most other on-line sites are charging. Having said that, it's very simple and easy to use and the size makes it not much of a bother to bring along just about anywhere. The biggest complaint I would have with this flash is that it could really benefit from either a swivle base or a tiltable head or better yet...both! Since most Lumix camera's..especially the LX5, excell in dim light conditions a direct flash isn't always desirable. Sure, there's plenty of compensation built into the camera but nothing beats an indirect flash except actual daylight so that would be my only complaint. Overall a very good flash regardless.

Comments about Panasonic DMW-FL220 External Flash:
I have this flash on my Lumix LX5 since day 1 and have not taken it off the camera since. It is a little top heavy on the LX5 but it is the smallest and lightest among the available options from Panasonic for the Lumix line. It is much more powerful than LX5's on-camera flash and illuminates the subject well. A must-have accessory for LX5 if you are serious about photography.

Comments about Panasonic DMW-FL220 External Flash:
Panasonic makes excellent cameras. I bought the GF1 and have been very pleased with it, but I had concerns about their accessories. The electronic viewfinder Great, the lenses metzo metzo (only the 20mm pancake lens measures up to the potential), and then I bought the Flash FL220.... After 1 week it fails to recognize the camera. The connection is there, but it blinks indicating the flash won't connect and the flash won't fire. Initially OK but not anymore. Not a battery issue, not a GF1 issue (viewfinder still works), it is the contact on the base of the flash where it won't connect to and recognize the camera. When it did work it was nice size, enough flash better than the built in which is marginal at best. My fear of the accessories was evidently well founded. The GF1 for the money won't be worth it without the flash capability. Back to the HEAVY 5D mark 2 with the 580 flash for my grandson. Buyer beware.....

Comments about Panasonic DMW-FL220 External Flash:
If you don't like the tiny built-in flash of the great Panasonic GF-1, then try this one out. It doesn't weigh much and adds a bit more punch. Its not like a hugh flash but then it would be a top heavy combination.
I would recommend this flash.

Comments about Panasonic DMW-FL220 External Flash:
I use it with the GF1, when I need a little more light output than the built-in flash of the GF1 is capable of.
Fits in your shirt pocket. Not as powerful as the bigger models, but it does not add more weight and bulk to the GF1 camera.
I would have given it 5 stars if the head would tilt at least 45 degrees up.

Well made.Small light and well balanced with the camera, decent reach.
2 AA batteries, charging time is OK.
Only complaint that is no way to bounce, but is much better than build in flash.

Comments about Panasonic DMW-FL220 External Flash:
One of the things I don't like about using a Lumix GF1 with its 14-45mm lens is the shadow the built-in flash creates on wider angle shots. This is my solution to that issue. It's compact and lightweight. The only thing that avoided me from giving it a 5-star rating is that it doesn't have any sort of swiveling head for indirect flash. I am very happy with this purchase and would rather not get a larger flash with a swiveling head but weigh my GF1 down which would beat its purpose as a lightweight alternative to my DSLR.
