The DP-004 Digital Pocketstudio from TASCAM brings all of the great features of the Portastudio line of products into a compact unit that's smaller than a paperback book. Ideal for the traveling musician, the DP-004 provides 4 tracks of CD-quality digital audio recording, as well as mixing and editing features.
Rather than using confusing layered menus, the DP-004 provides real knobs for tactile, intuitive control. The unit uses standard SD flash memory cards to record up to 2 audio sources at once. You can use the on-board stereo microphone to record a performance, or connect instruments or microphones to the 2 1/4" mic/line inputs. A 3.5mm output is provided for connecting headphones or speakers.
A bounce feature lets you consolidate tracks once all 4 are filled in order to make room for more overdub layers. An autopunch feature lets you fix problems, and an undo function allows you to cancel out any edits. You can use the knobs to set levels and pan, and then record the mix to a dedicated stereo master track. You can transfer your tracks and mixes to your computer by using the USB 2.0 connection, or by removing the SD card and using a separate card reader.

I bought this recently as a once active musician who still has ideas but little time to record them - I even have a digital studio set up - but I wanted something I could take between home and kid and the studio and work and easily put things down. As a long ago user of the Teac and tascam Porta Studios (cassette 4 track) I was totally thrilled to get this. Its as easy to use as the Porta One was, but with phenomenal sound quality and unbelievably low price. I recently used it to record a live session and the stereo mics get a separation and mix that you will not believe. I sound like a shill - campaigning for the manufacturer, but believe me - this thing is incredible! The small size (fits in any bag - the size of a paperback book) and the manual pots and minimal scrolling to choose functions are why I chose this, as well as the ability to dump tracks to computer - Cubase - which I already use (tho I have not dumped any tracks as yet) - I am certain that the quality at which this records (with line inputs - not necessarily for live band recording) is perfectly usable for any studio production. The only down side I can see is that the batteries seem to run out pretty quick - maybe after 4 hours or so of use, so I'd get the AC power adapter.

Great little recorder for practice, or for just about any application that calls for multitrack. I use mine to record vocals and build 6 and 8 part pieces with two or three voices. Very portable and can work in tandem with just about any equipment.

Comments about Tascam DP-004 Digital Pocketstudio Portable Recorder/Mixer:
this pocket studio is worth the money. There are a lot of directions, but clearly written and by playing around with it, I got to understand how it works. I really can't think of cons. I have a large recorder Tape)that sat out for about two years without using it. Had to hook up a mike with phantom power And never got comfortable using it. This pocket studio is a lot easier to learn to use

Comments about Tascam DP-004 Digital Pocketstudio Portable Recorder/Mixer:
Relatively easy to get going - adding voiceover and music to video and pan-still captures for historic 5-7 minute bits for the AZ-centennial (2012).Upon actually reading the 110 page manual, this machine gives me more functionality than I can eat!Our old system was based on the 4-track Tascam cassette system from 20 years ago - which worked well once you really learned it. The DP-004 was cheaper and waay better, and 80 bucks cheaper, if memory serves.

Does everything I want a portable 4-track to do. The built in microphones are surprisingly sensitive. Easy to start using, and has plenty of convenient features like a built-in metronome, tuner, and the ability to skip to the beginning of the song or to the last recording position. No complaints whatsoever. Now I just have to get better at playing guitar...

I recently purchased the Tascam pocket studio. I am really happy with how good it works and how easy it is to figure it out! Im in a band but we are all too busy to get together to write songs. This device allows me to record my ideas and then give the memory card to the other guys(who also have the Pocket studio ) so they record they're parts.

Comments about Tascam DP-004 Digital Pocketstudio Portable Recorder/Mixer:
Great sound quality, and it takes very little time to get used to the controls. I bought this to hook into the sound board at events I'm shooting video of, so I don't have to be tethered to the board, and it works great. Really small, too - about the size of an oversize paperback book.
Knocking off one star for the lack of a backlight on the LCD - that was a pretty serious oversight. Juggling a flashlight while getting levels set is irritating.

The DP-004 dose exactly what's its made for and does it well. I just want to record ideas and band rehearsal. Though I have not done the latter, I assume it will be great. It has a sort of low tape hiss on quieter passages but who cares. My recordings are very good and clear sounding and recording is a fast process. It only needs one thing for 5 stars and that would be a lighted display.

Comments about Tascam DP-004 Digital Pocketstudio Portable Recorder/Mixer:
I use this recorder to record audio during event video production, to give me an alternate audio stream in case the camera audio somehow spoils. I connect it directly to the main audio mixer at the event, bypassing the video cameras. Records good quality audio using external mics (the internal mics though convenient at times are not as good). Setup is simple once you get used to the system. I have never used it to record multiple tracks like musicians would need, but despite the overkill in terms of functionality, it was a great purchase for the price.
The only con in this model is the lack of a backlit screen which is the only reason for a 4-star rating.

Comments about Tascam DP-004 Digital Pocketstudio Portable Recorder/Mixer:
I have only had this in use for a time, but so far we love this little mixer. It is patched to the monitor outputs of my church so we can record a few of the microphones. So far it has worked like a charm and we are using the recordings for podcasts.
It is very simple to use. We can master right on the box. It is VERY small and easy to get out of the way, yet all of the controls are easy to access.
Getting the recording from the device to the computer is about the only improvement that could be beneficial. It is a multi step process to get the recording into a useable PC format and on to the PC. I may just not have found the best way to do it yet.
