Compact and lightweight, the Velbon Ultra LUXi-L Tripod incorporates the patented "Twist Lock" leg-locking system, which allows its legs to lock and unlock quickly and simply with just a half turn twist. This unique system speeds up the set-up time significantly. This model also features the Trunion Shaft System (TSS), where the main leg-bolts are now positioned directly above the shaft, which makes the tripod even more compact when closed.
The tripod's unique leg assembly allows for a five-section tripod with a great expansion/contraction ratio (~63" extended & ~15" collapsed). It is especially ideal for use as a traveling tripod, to be used with a standard digital SLR camera system.
The included PHD-41Q is a fully-featured 3-way pan/tilt head, with separate (removable) control handles and a quick release system.

Comments about Velbon Ultra LUXi-L Tripod with PHD-41Q 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head:
Needed a strong tripod that folds small to transport quickly and fits on tripod carrying features on the outside of my camera bag without paying big bucks for carbon fiber. This one definitely fits the bill and is easy to use.

Comments about Velbon Ultra LUXi-L Tripod with PHD-41Q 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head:
Although not a substitute for a "heavyweight" tripod, this tripod is hard to beat for its size, weight and ease of use. Although rated for only 4.4 pounds, I am sure it could take more and slips easily into a backpack.

Comments about Velbon Ultra LUXi-L Tripod with PHD-41Q 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head:
I bought it based on the good reviews and the fact that it's very light. It's very versatile (multiple leg angles, tall at full height, folds small). It's also very intuitive to use. I love the levels on the head as well, makes life easier in setting up a shot.

This is a solid tripod. Fast to extend the tripod legs by turning the rubber foot clockwise. It's very light weight, which is ideal for traveling. I highly recommend this tripod.

Comments about Velbon Ultra LUXi-L Tripod with PHD-41Q 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head:
In "the old days", I owned several top-end Velbon tripods, so when I was shopping for a compact version, to carry in a daypack, I again looked to that company. (and trust B&H)
I wasn't disappointed. The tripod arrived quickly, packed well, and is exactly the thing to have in a hiking/camping bag, without adding too much weight and bulk. The included case with shoulder strap is handy, when hiking without the backpack, and the photographer features (tilt/pan head, etc.) are typical high Velbon quality.

Comments about Velbon Ultra LUXi-L Tripod with PHD-41Q 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head:
The Velbon Ultra line is the best easily portable tripod I've ever tried. I also have purchased the Maxi M and Maxi L versions of these sticks on prior occasions.
Super quick set-up and breakdown with no latches or nobs to break off. Lock the legs with a simple twist of the leg joints.
Extremely small and lightweight.
At the time of this writing B&H was sold out (I got the last one!) due to a lack of a U.S. distributor for this tripod line. Let's hope Velbon works that out because there is no comparable replacement.
The only thing I dislike about the Luxi is that one axis handle has to be removed and stowed in the other for transport. The smaller Maxi line doesn't require this.

Comments about Velbon Ultra LUXi-L Tripod with PHD-41Q 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head:
Bought this to take with me on my vacation. Fit perfect in the tripod holder on the Kata 467i I bought at the same time. Great travel tripod. The pan head was a little bulky for me, so I bought a smaller Vanguard ballhead. Very solid build. Great tripod.

Comments about Velbon Ultra LUXi-L Tripod with PHD-41Q 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head:
I bought this for the sole purpose of traveling to the west coast to do educational videos with a nutrition expert. The camera is a small Canon HV20 and it's just a matter of placement of the tripod - just straight on video so it works perfect for that. Get the setup and sound down and then it's a done deal. So this is not being used in adverse conditions - size and weight were my main considerations. Even though this is not a video tripod it works fine for the light weight HV20. I needed to have a tripod that would fit in carry on luggage and this is perfect. Traveling light was my main objective. I found out about this in one of B&H's newsletters and it was favorably viewed. This may not be for everyone, but it certainly fits my purposes. Seems like very good quality. I would think it's best for small to mid-range cameras.

Comments about Velbon Ultra LUXi-L Tripod with PHD-41Q 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head:
This is my favorite tripod. I use it for micro 4/3 format cameras, you might want something heavier for larger and heavier cameras.
I took the pan/tilt head off and use a small ball head to make it even smaller and to save weight, but the pan head is very good and comes with bubble levels.
It extends as high as I need (Im 5'11") yet is very compact when collapsed.
The simple and fast way the legs extend with just a twist is far better than anything I have used before.

Comments about Velbon Ultra LUXi-L Tripod with PHD-41Q 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head:
This is a great traveling tripod. Velbon has put some thought into making this as compact as possible. Fitting the one pan handle into the other to make it more compact is brilliant. My only gripe, which is why I did not give it 5 stars is that for the 2 pan handles one controls both the horizontal as well as the rotation of the camera (Landscape to portrait). I would have preferred to have the latter be separate.

Comments about Velbon Ultra LUXi-L Tripod with PHD-41Q 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head:
I've checked a lot of makes and models without finding what I wanted: the perfect compromise between stiffness, adequate pan/tilt head, height >60", folded length <20", weight < 4 lbs. The Ultra LUXi-L has turned out to be just what I wanted for traveling with my very light Nikon Fieldscope 13-30 50ED.

Comments about Velbon Ultra LUXi-L Tripod with PHD-41Q 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head:
I have searched many years for a good ultra compact tripod with few compromises. The Ultra Luxi-L fits the bill. When folded it is a mere 15" in length; yet it expands up to 63". The tripod head is top-notch with level indicators, quick release, 3-way pan/tilt, etc. It is versatile and adjusts quickly and easily. It's also very stable. It's great for hikes and other outdoor activities.
